3.2GPA

Best for families and teams who share logins

1Password is the password manager people pay for even though free ones exist. It fills your logins on every device, keeps your passkeys, and makes sharing the wifi password with family painless. But it does cost: after a 14-day trial it's $3.99 a month on yearly billing, and Bitwarden does the basics for nothing.

Who 1Password is for

  • Great if you want the same passwords and passkeys on every phone, laptop and browser
  • Handy when the whole family needs the wifi and streaming logins, with five people on one plan
  • Good for teams of up to 10, where the Starter Pack is a flat $24.95 a month
  • A treat if you're a developer and want SSH keys and a command-line tool built in

Who 1Password is not for

  • Skip it if you want a free password manager, since Bitwarden and Proton Pass both have one
  • Pricey if you only need one person's logins saved, which rivals do for nothing
  • Not for you if you want someone to phone when it breaks, as personal support is by email
  • Tight if a small team needs single sign-on, since that starts on Business at $8.99

Why 1Password gets a 3.2

Five grades, each with its reason. The GPA is their average: an A is 4 points, an F is none.

  • BValue for money$3.99 a month on yearly billing isn't much, and Families covers five people for $5.99. But Bitwarden Premium is $1.65 and its free plan may be all you need, so you're paying extra for polish.
  • CFree plan and trialThere's no free plan. You do get 14 days on any plan with no card needed. But Bitwarden and Proton Pass are free for good, so in this category that's thin.
  • AFeaturesAutofill for logins, cards and two-factor codes, passkeys, Watchtower alerts for leaked passwords, sharing by a link that expires, and shared vaults. Developers get a command-line tool too.
  • BEase of use4.7 from about 42,000 App Store ratings, so most people get on with it. But reviewers who moved from version 7 to 8 found it harder, and some say autofill misses or it asks for the password too often.
  • APlatforms and integrationsMac, Windows, Linux, iPhone, Android and Apple Watch, with extensions for Chrome, Safari, Edge, Firefox and Brave. Business plans plug into Okta, Entra ID, OneLogin and Duo.

The good

So why pay for a password manager when your phone has one built in? Because 1Password goes everywhere you do, not just one company's devices.

Mac, Windows, Linux, iPhone, Android and every big browser. One reviewer says a password changed on one device turns up on the others straight away.

It fills things in for you. Logins, card numbers, addresses, even those six-digit codes for two-step sign-in. It saves passkeys too, so on sites that take them you skip the password altogether.

Sharing is the bit it does best. A family gets shared vaults, so the streaming logins live in one place for everyone. Need to give the babysitter the wifi password? Send a link that expires, and they don't need 1Password to open it.

Watchtower keeps watch as well, flagging passwords that are weak, reused or caught up in a breach.

And there's a second lock on your account, a Secret Key that sits alongside your password. 1Password says even it can't see what you store.

The stuff that'll bug you

It costs money. That's most of the case against it. There's no free plan, and Bitwarden and Proton Pass both store unlimited logins on unlimited devices for nothing.

The move to version 8 left some scars. Going through the App Store reviews, several long-time users say the upgrade from version 7 went badly: imports that failed, items that went missing, a layout they liked less.

Autofill isn't perfect either. Some reviewers and Hacker News commenters say it misses on certain sites, and they end up copying and pasting.

A few find it asks for the main password far too often. One says they turned off nearly every security setting just to make it bearable.

Support is hit and miss as well. Some reviewers praise it. Others, stuck with a locked account, got email only, with days between replies.

And if a company wants single sign-on, that doesn't start until Business at $8.99 a person.

Money

There's a 14-day free trial on every plan, and no card is needed to start. Use it. Two weeks is enough to move your logins over and see how autofill behaves on the sites you care about.

Individual is $3.99 a month, billed yearly. New customers pay $2.99 for the first year, so expect it to go up in year two.

Families is $5.99 a month for five people, or $4.49 in year one. Split five ways that's about $1.20 each, which is the best deal here by a mile.

For work, the Teams Starter Pack is a flat $24.95 a month for 10 people on yearly billing. You can add up to 10 more seats at $4.99 each.

Business is $8.99 a person a month and adds single sign-on with Okta, Entra ID, OneLogin and Duo. Enterprise is by quote.

Nonprofits and journalists can ask for a discount, and students get one through Student Beans.

What actual users say

1Password has 4.7 on the App Store from about 42,000 ratings. So most people are happy, even though the reviews shown on the listing are mostly the grumpy ones.

The happy ones say it kept every device in step where others didn't, and that they've only got one password to remember now.

On Hacker News it comes up when people ask what to set up for a parent, and one commenter calls it the best option they've found for the average person. People there like the extras as well, like a command-line tool, vaults with per-person access and somewhere to keep a photo of your passport.

Passkey fans are pleased too. Several say signing in got easier once their passkeys lived in 1Password and followed them to every device.

The unhappy reviews are nearly all about the version 8 switch, autofill and slow support.
