LastPass
Password manager with a free plan and business access controls

LastPass review
Good · out of 4.0 · graded Oct 9, 2026
Best for families who share a lot of logins
LastPass does the whole password job, and $4 a month covers a family of six. So why aren't we keener? Trust. Attackers took copies of customer vaults in 2022, and people still bring it up. The free plan also makes you choose between your phone and your computer.
Who LastPass is for
- Great if your family shares logins, since six people are covered for $4 a month
- Handy when you only need your passwords on one kind of device and won't pay
- Good for businesses that want passwords and single sign-on from one supplier
- A treat if you want someone you trust to get into your vault in an emergency
Who LastPass is not for
- Skip it if the 2022 vault theft is a deal-breaker, which is fair enough
- Not for you if you want free passwords on your phone and your laptop
- Pricey if it's just you, since Bitwarden Premium is $19.80 a year
- Tight if you want to pay monthly, because every paid plan is billed by the year
Why LastPass gets a 2.8
Five grades, each with its reason. The GPA is their average: an A is 4 points, an F is none.
- CValue for money$36 a year mostly buys what Bitwarden and Proton Pass give away: your passwords on phone and laptop together. Families at $4 a month for six is the better deal.
- BFree plan and trialUnlimited passwords for nothing, and it never runs out. But you get one device type: computers or phones, not both. Bitwarden and Proton Pass have no such rule.
- AFeaturesPasskeys, sharing, emergency access, breach alerts and 1 GB for files, plus single sign-on on the business plans. On paper, nothing's missing.
- CEase of use4.4 from about 57,000 App Store ratings, the lowest of the big names here. The gripes repeat: autofill getting in the way, and being logged out again and again.
- BPlatforms and integrationsWindows, Mac, iPhone, Android, Apple Watch, the web and five browsers. Linux only gets the browser extensions. Business plans plug into Okta and Google Workspace.
The good
So what does LastPass get right? The everyday stuff. It saves a password the first time you type it, fills it in next time, and makes up a strong one when a site asks.
Sharing gets the most credit. Put the Netflix, broadband and school-portal logins in a folder, share the folder, done. One Hacker News commenter who was moving to Bitwarden found LastPass's way the easier of the two to follow.
Families is good value. Six people, each with a private vault nobody else can open, for $4 a month.
There's emergency access as well. Pick someone you trust and they can get in if something happens to you.
And it's still being fixed up. An August 2026 update stopped the LastPass icon turning up in search boxes and date fields.
The stuff that'll bug you
The history. We can't skip it.
In 2022, attackers got into LastPass's cloud backups and took copies of customer vaults. LastPass's own write-up says the passwords inside were encrypted, but the website addresses were not.
Day to day, the App Store complaints are about phones. Autofill pop-ups in the way, new passwords not saved.
And people get locked out. A few reviewers describe going round in circles proving who they are, with no human to call. Free accounts only get the self-help pages.
Money
Free holds as many passwords as you like. You just have to pick one device type, computers or phones. New accounts start with 30 days of Premium, then drop to Free.
Premium is $3 a month, billed as $36 a year. That gets you both device types, sharing with several people, emergency access and 1 GB for files.
Families is $4 a month for six people, billed as $48. If there are two of you, it's already the cheaper buy.
For work it's $4.25 a person on Teams, $7 on Business and $11 on Business Max, which is where unlimited single sign-on lives.
Nothing can be paid monthly, and the business plans have a 14-day trial with no card needed. Look at Bitwarden before you pay, though. Its Premium is $19.80 a year.
What actual users say
LastPass has 4.4 on the App Store from about 57,000 ratings. Most are five stars, but more than 6,000 are one star.
The happy ones sound relieved. One had 250 logins in a spreadsheet until their IT department pointed them at LastPass.
The unhappy ones bring up three things: autofill misfiring on the phone, getting locked out, and support they can't reach. Some are still sore that free used to mean every device.
Hacker News is harsher. Threads about LastPass are full of people who say they left for 1Password or Bitwarden. A few stick up for it: it's on everything, sharing is easy, and switching is a slog.
