How we grade them

4.0GPABitwardenExcellent2.8GPALastPassGood
Value for money
APremium is $1.65 a month, billed as $19.80 a year. That's a little over half the $2.99 or so that password managers typically start at. Families covers up to 6 people for $3.99 a month.
C$36 a year mostly buys what Bitwarden and Proton Pass give away: your passwords on phone and laptop together. Families at $4 a month for six is the better deal.
Free plan and trial
AFree for good, with unlimited logins, passkeys, notes and cards on unlimited devices. Most people could stay here. What you don't get is file attachments, the built-in authenticator and emergency access.
BUnlimited passwords for nothing, and it never runs out. But you get one device type: computers or phones, not both. Bitwarden and Proton Pass have no such rule.
Features
APasswords, passkeys, autofill, a password and username generator, and Send, which shares a secret by a link that disappears. Premium adds two-factor codes and 5 GB of encrypted attachments. You can even run it on your own server.
APasskeys, sharing, emergency access, breach alerts and 1 GB for files, plus single sign-on on the business plans. On paper, nothing's missing.
Ease of use
A4.8 from about 33,500 App Store ratings. Sign up free and your logins fill in across your devices. Running your own server is optional, and most people will never go near it.
C4.4 from about 57,000 App Store ratings, the lowest of the big names here. The gripes repeat: autofill getting in the way, and being logged out again and again.
Platforms and integrations
AWeb, Mac, Windows, Linux, iPhone, Android and a browser extension. Business plans add directory sync, SCIM and single sign-on. No common device is left out.
BWindows, Mac, iPhone, Android, Apple Watch, the web and five browsers. Linux only gets the browser extensions. Business plans plug into Okta and Google Workspace.

LastPass

  • The Free plan works on one device type, computer or mobile but not both, and comes with self-service support only.
  • Paid plans are priced per month but billed annually; the pricing page shows no monthly billing option.
  • Teams is capped at 50 users, and single sign-on is limited to 3 apps on Business; unlimited SSO apps need Business Max.
  • On Linux the download page offers browser extensions only; the desktop app installers are for Windows and macOS.
