Part 01 · Overview

Welcome

What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first

2.8

GPA, above 4 of the 17 other password managers we grade

LastPass is a password manager and access security platform for individuals, families and businesses. It stores passwords, passkeys and notes in an encrypted vault, fills them in through browser extensions and mobile apps, and syncs them across every device on paid plans. Business tiers add an admin console, security policies, single sign-on and monitoring of the SaaS and AI tools employees use.

To get you started, here are 9 things to know about LastPass, taken from its own pages and our grades.

The gripes repeat: autofill getting in the way, and being logged out again and again.
From our grade for ease of use
  1. 1

Best for families who share a lot of logins

The free plan works on computers or phones, not both, with self-help support only, and every paid plan is billed yearly.

  2. 2

Paid plans start at $3 a month

As its pricing page puts it: $3 per month, billed annually at $36 (Premium).

  3. 3

    There is a free plan

1 user, unlimited passwords and access on one device type, either computer or mobile but not both. Sharing is limited to one password with one person at a time. Starts with a 30-day trial of Premium.

  4. 4

    It runs on 6 platforms

Web, macOS, Windows, Linux, iOS and Android, with a browser extension too.

  5. 5

    Password vault and autofill

Stores an unlimited number of passwords, notes and payment cards in an encrypted vault and fills saved logins and forms for you. A generator creates new passwords.

  6. 6

    Passkeys

Creates, stores and manages passkeys alongside passwords through the browser extension or mobile app, and syncs them across devices and browsers.

  7. 7

    Sharing and emergency access

Premium and Families share items with several people and can grant a trusted person emergency access. The Free plan shares one password with one person at a time.

  8. 8

    A 2.8 GPA, above 4 of 17

That is against the other password managers we grade, on value, the free plan, features, ease of use and platforms.

  9. 9

    Keep it

To replace LastPass you would be making a password vault, the last thing anyone should make for themselves. That is not a weekend's work, with an AI app builder or without one.

The report card

Best for families who share a lot of logins

LastPass is a password manager that covers the usual jobs, and its Families plan is $4 a month for six people. But attackers took copies of customer vaults from its cloud backups in 2022, and people still bring it up. The free plan works on computers or phones, not both, with self-help support only, and every paid plan is billed yearly. If that history bothers you, look at Bitwarden or 1Password.

ToolGPA report cardLastPassGraded Oct 10, 2026
SubjectGradeComment
Value for moneyCPremium is $3 a month, billed as $36 a year, right at this category's $2.99 middle. What it mostly buys is what Bitwarden and Proton Pass give away: your passwords on phone and laptop together. Families is $4 a month for six people, billed as $48.
Free plan and trialCUnlimited passwords for nothing, and it never runs out, but there's a wall you meet on day one: one device type, computers or phones, not both. Sharing is one password with one person at a time, and support is self-help only.
FeaturesBPasskeys, sharing, emergency access, breach alerts, 1 GB for files, an admin console and single sign-on on the business plans cover what the category expects. Nothing goes beyond its rivals, Business covers SSO for only 3 apps, and Linux gets extensions only.
Ease of useB4.4 from about 57,000 App Store ratings, which is weight enough to count but the lowest of the big names here. The gripes repeat: autofill getting in the way, and being logged out again and again.
Platforms and integrationsAWindows, Mac, iPhone, Android, Apple Watch, the web and five browsers, with Linux getting the extensions only. Business plans plug into Entra ID, Active Directory, Okta, Google Workspace, Splunk and Sentinel.
Grade point averageGood, out of 4.02.8

An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.

Who LastPass is for

  • Fits if your family shares logins, since six people are covered for $4 a month billed yearly
  • Works for businesses that want passwords and single sign-on from one supplier

Who it is not for

  • Skip it if the 2022 theft of customer vaults from its cloud backups is a deal-breaker
  • Not for you if you want free passwords on your phone and your laptop, as Free covers one device type
  • Pricey if it's just you, at $36 a year when Bitwarden Premium is $19.80
  • Tight if you want to pay monthly, because every paid plan is billed by the year
  • Watch out: Linux gets browser extensions only, the Plus VPN is Windows only, and Business covers SSO for just 3 apps

Good to know

Good for

  • People who only need their passwords on one type of device and want a free plan
  • Households of up to six who each want a private vault
  • Small and mid-sized businesses that want SSO and MFA alongside password management

Worth knowing

  • The Free plan works on one device type, computer or mobile but not both, and comes with self-service support only.
  • Paid plans are priced per month but billed annually; the pricing page shows no monthly billing option.
  • Teams is capped at 50 users, and single sign-on is limited to 3 apps on Business; unlimited SSO apps need Business Max.
  • On Linux the download page offers browser extensions only; the desktop app installers are for Windows and macOS.

Other password managers it is graded above

LastPass's GPA of 2.8 is higher than 4 of the 17 other password managers we grade, and level with 5.

It stands best on platforms and integrations (A, above 12 of 17) and worst on value for money (C, above 1).

Its paid plans start at $3 a month, against a middle price of $2.59 for the category: 9 of the 13 others that charge start lower.

On features, ease of use and platforms it scores 3.3 out of 4. 2 tools score higher and cost less.

Keep it, or make your own?

Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.

Keep it

To replace LastPass you would be making a password vault, the last thing anyone should make for themselves. That is not a weekend's work, with an AI app builder or without one.

That makes this kind of software worth paying for, not this one in particular: 8 of the 17 other password managers grade higher. It costs $36 a year.

What you could not

  • A password vault, the last thing anyone should make for themselves.
  • Passkeys, which rest on security you cannot improvise.
  • Apps for macOS, Windows, Linux, iOS and Android that stay in step with each other.
  • It plugs into other products, Microsoft Entra ID, Microsoft Active Directory and Google Workspace among them.
  • What a company asks for before it lets staff use something: single sign-on and roles and permissions.
  • The depth: we grade its features B, which means it covers the whole job.

What this rests on. LastPass’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
