Value for money
BLifetime Premium is $13.90 once on the US App Store, which is very little next to a typical $5.99 a month. But neither the site nor the store lists what it unlocks, so it gets the grade we give when a listing can't say. The store also shows $9.69 and $6.95 versions without saying who qualifies.
APay once: $7.99 on Windows, $9.99 for Premium on Android, and a $14.99 Lifetime purchase on the US App Store. Any of those is under three months of the $5.99 this category typically charges. Just steer clear of Apple's Weekly option at $7.99.
Free plan and trial
BFree to download and use on iPad, iPhone and Mac, with no account needed. That sounds generous. But the limits of the free version aren't spelled out anywhere we could read, so we can't tell you where it stops.
BFree gives you 3 notebooks with unlimited pages, hundreds of templates and 30 AI credits a month, going by the Android page. Three notebooks runs out fast, and handwriting recognition and search need Premium.
Features
A50+ pens and brushes, shape recognition, and markup on PDFs, PowerPoint slides and Word documents. Audio records as you write and tapping a word jumps to that moment. Then translation into 90+ languages, step-by-step equation solving, planners, flashcards and real-time collaboration.
APens and highlighters modelled on real ones, shape tidying, a zoom box, PDF and slide markup, a document scanner and audio recording. Premium reads and searches handwriting in 65 languages. An AI assistant summarises pages, and there are 200+ templates.
Ease of use
A4.7 from about 14,000 App Store ratings. You can start without an account, and only need to log in when you want to collaborate.
B4.56 from about 6,800 App Store ratings, just under our line for an A. Buying it is the fiddly part: the App Store shows several yearly prices from $19.99 to $49.99, so what you're offered in the app may vary.
Platforms and integrations
CiPhone, iPad, Apple Vision and Macs with an M1 chip or later. All Apple. No Android, Windows or web version is on the listing.
AiPad, iPhone, Mac, Android and Windows, with backup to Google Drive, OneDrive, Dropbox or WebDAV. One gap: sync is iCloud on Apple and Google Drive on Android, and the listings don't describe syncing between the two.
