Value for money
AIt's free, with no in-app purchases on the US App Store. Donations fund it, and there are no paid plans at all. There's nothing to weigh up.
BMoodflow Plus shows on the US App Store at $3.49, $9.99 and $14.99, with no billing period beside any of them. The one Plus feature the site names is cloud backup of your photos. With that little to go on, it's the grade we give when a listing can't say.
Free plan and trial
AEvery feature is free: check-ins, journal notes and photos, pattern charts, the video strategies and sharing with friends. No account is needed, and nothing is held back.
AThe terms say the core features are free: check-ins and journals kept on your phone, with optional backup to your own Google Drive. The only ads are ones you choose to watch. Most people could stay here.
Features
AIt does one job, the emotion check-in, and does it fully. You get a grid of feeling words, then tags, a written entry, photos and a body sensation map. An Analyze tab and a weekly review chart it all, and short videos teach ways to steady yourself.
AOne-tap check-ins, several a day if you like, with charts that rank how activities, people and habits go with your mood. There's a daily journal with photos, a gratitude journal, a symptom journal, a year grid coloured by mood, a routine planner and 28-day challenges.
Ease of use
A4.9 from about 29,900 App Store ratings. A check-in is picking a word from a grid, so it takes a moment. There's no account to set up, and some of the strategy videos are as short as a minute.
BNo App Store rating on record, so B is as high as we go. A check-in is one rating and a few taps, and the note, photos and activities are all optional.
Platforms and integrations
CiPhone and Android phones only. The App Store listing says only for iPhone, on iOS 17.0 or later, and no iPad, Mac or web version is listed. On iPhone it reads sleep and exercise trends from Apple Health and can sync to iCloud.
CiPhone and Android, and that's it. There's no web or desktop version, and the App Store listing is for iPhone only. Its one connection is a backup to your own Google Drive.

Who each one suits

How We Feel

  • People who want a mood journal with no subscription or in-app purchases
  • Learning more precise words for emotions and spotting patterns in them
  • Therapy clients who want to capture feelings between sessions

Moodflow

  • People who want to log a mood in one tap and add detail only when they feel like it
  • Seeing which activities, people and habits go with better or worse days
  • Privacy-minded users who want entries kept on the phone

Worth knowing

How We Feel

  • Phone only: the App Store listing says it is only for iPhone, alongside the Android app; no iPad, Mac or web version is listed.
  • The App Store listing gives English and Spanish as the only languages.
  • The iPhone app requires iOS 17.0 or later.
  • The vendor describes it as a wellbeing journal, not a replacement for therapy or professional care.

Moodflow

  • There is no web or desktop version, and the App Store listing is for iPhone only.
  • The site lists no Plus prices; the App Store shows $3.49, $9.99 and $14.99 purchases without saying what period each covers.
  • The Google Drive backup file is not separately encrypted, and only the 4 most recent backups are kept.
  • Because entries live on the device, the vendor cannot restore them if the phone is lost without a backup.

Key features

How We Feel

Mood Meter check-ins
Each check-in starts with choosing a word for how you feel from a color-coded grid of emotions split into quadrants, which is meant to build a more precise emotional vocabulary.
Tags, journal notes and photos
A check-in can carry tags, a written journal entry, photos and a body sensation map, so the situation around a feeling is kept with it.
Pattern analysis
An Analyze tab and a weekly review chart check-ins over time. On iPhone the app reads sleep, exercise and other health trends through HealthKit to set beside them.
Video regulation strategies
Step-by-step videos, some as short as a minute, are grouped under four themes: Change Your Thinking, Move Your Body, Be Mindful and Reach Out.
Sharing with friends
The Friends feature shares how you feel in real time with people you choose. Check-ins stay private unless you decide to share them.
On-device data
Data stays on the device unless you opt in to send an anonymized copy of your check-ins for research. The iOS app can sync to iCloud, and no account is required.

Moodflow

One-tap check-ins
Rate the day from 1 to 5 and pick the emotions you felt, then optionally add the activities you did and a note. Several entries can be made in one day.
Insights and correlations
Charts break mood down by activity, social interaction and life factor, and rank how relationships and habits correlate with it over any time window.
Daily, gratitude and symptom journals
The daily journal takes free writing with photos and places, the gratitude journal gives a daily prompt, and the symptom journal logs symptoms and triggers.
Calendar and year views
Each day takes a color from its mood. Months can be shown in ring, gradient or average styles, and a year grid shows one square per day.
Routines and 28-day challenges
A routine planner tracks routines step by step, and 28-day challenges at several difficulty levels are meant to build simple habits.
On-device storage and backups
Entries stay on the phone and are not sent to the vendor. An optional backup goes to a hidden folder in your own Google Drive, and Plus backs up entry photos to the vendor's cloud.
