Part 01 · Overview
Welcome
What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first
2.4
GPA, above 27 of the 123 other to-do list apps we grade
4.Do is a to-do app that sorts tasks into the four quadrants of the Eisenhower Matrix by urgency and importance. Tasks can have subtasks, reminders, repeats, tags and attachments, and an auto-advance option moves them between quadrants as due dates approach. It is free to download for Android, iPhone, iPad and Mac, with a Premium subscription for full access to all features.
To get you started, here are 9 things to know about 4.Do, taken from its own pages and our grades.
No store rating on record, but there's nothing to set up: four boxes, drag a task into one.
- 1
Best for sorting tasks by urgent and important
It's free to download on Android, iPhone, iPad and Mac.
- 2
Paid plans start at $2.50 a month when paid by the year
As its pricing page puts it: $4.99 per month, or $29.99 per year (US App Store).
- 3
There is a free plan
The app is free to download and use. The App Store listing says a Premium upgrade gives full access to all features, without listing which ones the free version leaves out.
- 4
It runs on 3 platforms
Android, iOS and macOS.
- 5
Four-quadrant matrix
Tasks are grouped by urgency and importance, with an overview of all four quadrants or a focused view of one. Quadrants can be renamed and given custom colors.
- 6
Auto-advance and drag and drop
Auto-Advance adjusts a task's quadrant based on its due date, and drag and drop moves a task by hand when its priority changes.
- 7
Subtasks, repeats and attachments
Large tasks break into subtasks, tasks repeat at custom intervals with reminders, and images or files can be attached for reference.
- 8
A 2.4 GPA, above 27 of 123
That is against the other to-do list apps we grade, on value, the free plan, features, ease of use and platforms.

The report card
Best for sorting tasks by urgent and important
4.Do puts every task in one of the four Eisenhower boxes, urgent versus important, and can move tasks between boxes as their due dates near. It's free to download on Android, iPhone, iPad and Mac. But nothing on its pages says what the free version leaves out, Premium is a $29.99-a-year subscription bought blind, and there's no Windows, web or team version.
| Subject | Grade | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| Value for money | C | Premium is $4.99 a month or $29.99 a year on the US App Store, which works out at $2.50 a month, middling for a to-do app. And you're buying blind: the listing says Premium gives "full access to all features" without naming one of them. |
| Free plan and trial | C | It's free to download and use, with no trial clock ticking. But 4.Do never says which features the free version goes without, so nobody can tell you where the wall is until you hit it. |
| Features | C | Four quadrants you can rename and recolour, subtasks, repeats, reminders, tags, filters and attachments, with Auto-Advance shifting a task as its date nears. It does the urgent-versus-important job fully, and that's a smaller job, with bits missing per platform: Siri on iPhone, the Quick Settings tile on Android. |
| Ease of use | B | No store rating on record, but there's nothing to set up: four boxes, drag a task into one. On Android you can add a task straight from the notification shade without opening the app. |
| Platforms and integrations | B | Android, iPhone, iPad and Mac, synced through 4.Do Cloud, so both phones and a computer are covered. But there's no Windows or web version, and Siri is the only integration on record. |
An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.
Who 4.Do is for
- Fits if you already plan with the Eisenhower or Covey four quadrants
- Works for people with an Android phone and a Mac who want the same matrix on both
Who it is not for
- Skip it if you want to know what's free before you start, because the vendor doesn't say
- Not for you if you work on Windows or in a browser, as neither is listed
- Too light for teams, as it's a personal matrix with nothing listed for sharing or assigning tasks
- Pricey if you pay monthly, at $4.99 against $29.99 a year, with no one-time purchase on the App Store
- Watch out: Google Play's in-app purchases ($1.99 to $29.99) aren't named, and Siri and the Quick Settings tile each work on one platform only
Good to know
Good for
- People who plan with the Eisenhower or Covey four quadrants
- Android users who add tasks from the notification shade
- One priority matrix on Android, iPhone, iPad and Mac
Worth knowing
- The vendor says Premium is needed for full access to all features but does not list what the free version leaves out.
- On the App Store, Premium is a subscription at $4.99 monthly or $29.99 yearly; no one-time purchase is listed there.
- Google Play shows in-app purchases of $1.99 to $29.99 per item without naming them or their billing period.
- No Windows or web version is listed, and some features exist on one platform only, such as the Quick Settings tile on Android and Siri on iOS.

Keep it, or make your own?
Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.
Keep it
The plain part of 4.Do you could make: tasks and calendar. What surrounds it you could not. The 3 things listed below take a company, not a weekend.
That makes this kind of software worth paying for, not this one in particular: 76 of the 123 other to-do list apps grade higher. It costs $29.99 a year.
What you could make
- Tasks and calendar: an app builder makes these well.
What you could not
- Apps for macOS, iOS and Android that stay in step with each other.
- AI features, unless you pay a model provider for each request yourself.
- Hooks into the device itself: Siri.
What this rests on. 4.Do’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
