Part 01 · Overview

Welcome

What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first

2.6

GPA, above 30 of the 74 other calendar and scheduling apps we grade

aCalendar is a calendar app for Android from Tapir Apps, an independent studio in Munich. It uses Android's own calendar storage and sync, so it shows Google, Exchange and CalDAV calendars already set up on the phone, with day, week, month, agenda and year views and eight widgets. The free version carries ads, and tasks, business features, public holidays and extra colors are sold as one-time upgrades or all together in the separate aCalendar+ app.

To get you started, here are 9 things to know about aCalendar, taken from its own pages and our grades.

The report card

Best for an Android calendar you pay for once

aCalendar is an Android calendar that reads the Google, Exchange and CalDAV calendars already on your phone, free with ads, with five views and 8 widgets. Tasks, public holidays, business features and extra colors are paid upgrades from $2.49 each, or $11.99 for aCalendar+. It's Android only, the maker says no iOS, web or PC version is planned, and upgrades bought in the free app can't be shared with family.

SubjectGradeComment
Value for moneyAOne-time payments, from $2.49 for a single upgrade to $11.99 for aCalendar+ with every upgrade in it. The middle of this category charges $6 a month, so the full set costs about two months of that, once.
Free plan and trialBThe free app has all five views, 8 widgets, multi-select, printing and ICS or CSV export, with ads, at most one a day by the maker's count. Tasks, public holidays, business features and the wider colors are paid.
FeaturesCFive views, eight widgets, recurrences, birthdays, printing to PDF and export to ICS or CSV, with tasks and attendee management as paid upgrades. It's a front end on Android's own sync, a smaller job than this category's, and runs no servers of its own.
Ease of useBNo rating on record. There's nothing to set up: it reads the Google, Exchange and CalDAV calendars Android already syncs, so there's no new account and no import. Swipe up and down for time, sideways for views.
Platforms and integrationsDOne operating system. Android, and the maker says plainly there's no iOS, web or PC version and none is planned, so your laptop and anyone's iPhone are out. It does read Google, Exchange and CalDAV accounts through Android's sync.
Grade point averageGood, out of 4.02.6

An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.

Who aCalendar is for

  • Fits if you're on Android only and would rather pay once than every month
  • Works for people who keep to-dos in Google Tasks or Microsoft To Do, once they buy the Tasks upgrade

Who it is not for

  • Skip it if you also use an iPhone or a computer: it's Android only, and the maker says no other version is planned
  • Tight if you're staying free: it shows ads, and tasks, public holidays and extra colors are paid upgrades
  • Watch out: attendees, free or busy status and work profiles sit in the paid Business Features upgrade
  • Not for you if you share purchases with family, as only the separate $11.99 aCalendar+ app works with Family Library
  • Watch out: licenses are tied to your store account and can't move between Google Play and Huawei AppGallery

Good to know

Good for

  • Android users who want a full calendar without a subscription
  • People who want Google Tasks or Microsoft To Do lists inside their calendar
  • Anyone who prefers to buy only the upgrades they need

Worth knowing

  • Android only. The vendor states there is no iOS, web or PC version and that none is planned.
  • The free version shows ads, and tasks, attendees, profiles, public holidays and the wider color choices all need a paid upgrade.
  • In-app upgrades cannot be shared through Google Play Family Library; only the separate aCalendar+ app can.
  • Licenses are tied to the store account and cannot be moved between Google Play and Huawei AppGallery.

Keep it, or make your own?

Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.

Keep it

The plain part of aCalendar you could make: calendar and tasks. What surrounds it you could not. The 3 things listed below take a company, not a weekend.

It costs $2.49, paid once.

What you could make

  • Calendar and tasks: an app builder makes these well.

What you could not

  • A real app for Android. Something home-made would be a web page.
  • It plugs into other products, Google Calendar, Google Tasks and Microsoft To Do among them.
  • Hooks into the device itself: widgets.

What this rests on. aCalendar’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
