The report card
Best for CRM and email marketing from one vendor
Act! is a small-business CRM with email marketing built in: contacts, a pipeline, quotes, payments, booking, forms and surveys in one subscription, plus a desktop edition you run yourself. It's $30 a user billed for the year, with no monthly option shown, AI tools wait for Professional at $45 and marketing automation for Ultimate at $60. Texts and desktop sync are add-ons, and our listing names no API.
| Subject | Grade | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| Value for money | C | Standard is $30 a user a month against a $24 middle for CRMs here, which puts it in the dearer quarter, though email marketing, quotes, payments and booking come with it. AI tools wait for Professional at $45, marketing automation for Ultimate at $60, and text messaging is an add-on from $19. |
| Free plan and trial | C | No free plan. There's a 14-day trial that doesn't ask for a card, which is the ordinary arrangement. After that every listed price is billed for the year, so you're deciding on twelve months at once. |
| Features | B | Contact history, a kanban pipeline with KPIs, email campaigns, online quotes, card and ACH payments, booking, web forms, surveys, website chat and event pages. That covers sales and marketing in one place. On Standard, though, forms, surveys, chat and event pages each come with just one designated user. |
| Ease of use | C | No store rating on record, and this is a big product to settle into: a configurable sales process, campaign templates, lookups and queries, and mailbox and calendar accounts to connect first. |
| Platforms and integrations | B | Web, iPhone and Android, with a separate self-managed desktop edition for offline access at $40 a user. It works with Outlook, Microsoft 365, Gmail, Google Calendar, Excel and Word, but our listing names no API. |
An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.
Who Act! is for
- Fits if you want your CRM and your email campaigns from one vendor
- Works for teams that want a desktop CRM they run themselves, with offline access, at $40 a user
Who it is not for
- Skip it if you want to pay monthly, as the pricing page only shows annual billing
- Pricey if you want marketing automation and lead scoring, which need Ultimate at $60 a user
- Not for you if you want a free plan, because there's only a 14-day trial
- Watch out: texting is an add-on from $19 a month, and Desktop Sync adds $10 a user to cloud plans
- Tight if you're on Standard, with 2,500 email sends a month and one designated user for forms, surveys and chat

Keep it, or make your own?
Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.
Keep it
To replace Act! you would be making email sent in volume that still reaches the inbox. That is not a weekend's work, with an AI app builder or without one.
It costs $360 a year.
What you could make
- Sales pipeline, forms, surveys and reports: an app builder makes these well.
What you could not
- Email sent in volume that still reaches the inbox.
- Booking pages that read and write other people's calendars and send the emails.
- A real app for iOS and Android. Something home-made would be a web page.
- It is priced for each person, which means accounts and billing for a team.
- It plugs into other products, Microsoft Outlook, Microsoft 365 and Gmail among them.
- AI features, unless you pay a model provider for each request yourself.
- The depth: we grade its features B, which means it covers the whole job.
What this rests on. Act!’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
