Part 01 · Overview
Welcome
What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first
2.0
GPA, above 2 of the 69 other daily planner apps we grade
Aftertone is a Mac app that combines a task list, a time-blocked calendar and a focus screen that shows one task at a time. It can turn pasted text or a screenshot into tasks, tag them by project and place them on the calendar automatically, with two-way Google Calendar sync. Daily and weekly reports show how much focused work was logged. The vendor describes itself as a small independent team in Manchester, UK.
To get you started, here are 9 things to know about Aftertone, taken from its own pages and our grades.
No rating on record, but it's a Mac app you install and plan in, with nothing to configure beyond connecting a calendar.
- 1
Best for keyboard-first time blocking on a Mac
Anyone off a Mac or Google Calendar should look elsewhere.
- 2
Paid plans start at $16.67 a month
As its pricing page puts it: $16.67 per month, billed yearly ($200), or $20 billed monthly.
- 3
You can try it first

- 5
Auto Plan and Auto Schedule
Tasks are arranged into time blocks on the calendar automatically, so a day can be planned without placing every item by hand.
- 6

- 7

The report card
Best for keyboard-first time blocking on a Mac
Aftertone is a Mac planner that lines up your tasks as time blocks, then shows you one at a time on a focus screen until you're done, with reports on how much focused work you did. But it's Mac only, it syncs with Google Calendar only, the phone apps are still in development, and it's $20 a month with no free plan, against a $5.99 middle for planners here. Anyone off a Mac or Google Calendar should look elsewhere.
| Subject | Grade | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| Value for money | D | $20 a month, or $200 for the year at $16.67 a month, when the middle for a planner here is $5.99 and the dearest tenth starts at $17.29. So it's two to three times the going rate, for a Mac-only app with one calendar integration. Everything is on the one plan, at least. |
| Free plan and trial | C | No free plan. The trial is 7 days with no card needed, and finishing a task on each day of your first week can earn up to 7 more. That is 14 days at most, then $20 a month. |
| Features | B | Auto-scheduling into time blocks, a one-task focus screen, tasks made from pasted text or a screenshot, a kanban planning view, Markdown notes, and daily and weekly reports on flow time. That's the planning job covered for one person, with Google Calendar as the only calendar it syncs. |
| Ease of use | B | No rating on record, but it's a Mac app you install and plan in, with nothing to configure beyond connecting a calendar. It's built around the keyboard, with Command pressed twice to capture a task from anywhere on the Mac. |
| Platforms and integrations | D | Mac only, on macOS 12 or later, with Google Calendar as its one integration. No Windows, no Linux, no web, and the iPhone and Android apps are described as still in development. |
An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.
Who Aftertone is for
- Fits if you work alone on a Mac and plan your day as blocks on Google Calendar
- Works for people who'd rather press keys than reach for the mouse
Who it is not for
- Skip it if you need your plan on your phone, as the mobile apps aren't out yet
- Not for you if your calendar is Outlook or iCloud, since only Google Calendar sync is described
- Pricey if you just want time blocking, at $20 a month or $200 a year with no free plan
- Not for you if you're on Windows or Linux, as it needs macOS 12 or later
- Watch out: the trial is 7 days, stretching to 14 at most if you finish a task each day of the first week
Good to know
Good for
- Solo Mac users who plan the day as time blocks on Google Calendar
- People who prefer keyboard shortcuts to the mouse
- Reviewing each week how much focused work was actually done
Worth knowing
- Mac only (macOS 12 or later): it does not run on Windows or Linux, and iOS and Android apps are described as in development.
- There is no free plan; once the trial ends the single plan costs $20 per month, or $200 per year.
- Google Calendar is the only calendar integration the vendor's pages describe.

Keep it, or make your own?
Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.
Keep it
The plain part of Aftertone you could make: time blocking, tasks, calendar and kanban boards. What surrounds it you could not. The 4 things listed below take a company, not a weekend.
That makes this kind of software worth paying for, not this one in particular: 62 of the 69 other daily planner apps grade higher. It costs $200.04 a year.
What you could make
- Time blocking, tasks, calendar and kanban boards: an app builder makes these well.
What you could not
- A scheduler that rearranges your day as things move.
- A real app for macOS. Something home-made would be a web page.
- AI features, unless you pay a model provider for each request yourself.
- The depth: we grade its features B, which means it covers the whole job.
What this rests on. Aftertone’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
