Who each one suits

Aftertone

  • Solo Mac users who plan the day as time blocks on Google Calendar
  • People who prefer keyboard shortcuts to the mouse
  • Reviewing each week how much focused work was actually done

Chunk

  • Mac users who time-block around Google, Outlook or Apple calendars
  • People who want a one-time license instead of a subscription
  • Keeping planning data on the device, with optional iCloud sync between Macs

Worth knowing

Aftertone

  • Mac only (macOS 12 or later): it does not run on Windows or Linux, and iOS and Android apps are described as in development.
  • There is no free plan; once the trial ends the single plan costs $20 per month, or $200 per year.
  • Google Calendar is the only calendar integration the vendor's pages describe.

Chunk

  • Chunk runs on macOS 12 or later only; the vendor says there is no Windows, Linux or Android version.
  • The iPhone app is listed as coming soon and will be a separate $8.99 one-time purchase, not part of the Mac license.
  • There is no free plan: access stops when the 7-day trial ends unless a license is bought.
  • A Mac license bought directly from Chunk is a final sale and is not refundable.

Key features

Aftertone

Auto Plan and Auto Schedule
Tasks are arranged into time blocks on the calendar automatically, so a day can be planned without placing every item by hand.
Focus Mode
Shows one task at a time and suggests the next when it is done. Sessions can be extended, shortened or paused for a break, and the calendar updates as you go.
Auto Capture and Universal Capture
Paste a block of text or add a screenshot and structured, project-tagged tasks land in the inbox. Pressing Command twice opens capture from anywhere on the Mac.
Google Calendar sync
Two-way sync with Google Calendar: existing events appear in Aftertone and time blocks created in Aftertone show up on the Google side.
Daily and weekly reports
A daily report email covers flow time, sessions and a project breakdown. The weekly report shows flow sessions, peak day, streak and tasks completed.
Planning view and task notes
A kanban-style planning view lays out every project for dragging and reprioritizing, and each task can carry Markdown notes.

Chunk

Menu bar panel
Opens from the menu bar or with Cmd+/ and floats above other windows, fullscreen apps included. A countdown for the current block stays in the menu bar.
Day, week and month timeline
Drag on the timeline to create a block or drop a task from a list. Views cover one, three or five days, a week or a month, with PDF and CSV export.
Two-way calendar sync
Google, Outlook and Apple Calendar events sit beside your blocks, and moving or resizing one in Chunk writes the change back. A lock toggle makes them read-only.
Task lists and templates
Smart lists, custom lists and Apple Reminders share one searchable column. Recurring template lists store a reusable day to apply whole or block by block.
Analytics
A dashboard compares 7, 30 and 90-day ranges for planned hours, completed tasks, follow-through and how consistently recurring routines were kept.
Local MCP server for Claude
An optional MCP server runs on the Mac and lets Claude Desktop read the schedule and create, edit or delete events, tasks and templates.
