Part 01 · Overview
Welcome
What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first
2.6
GPA, above 27 of the 51 other AI agents we grade
Agenta is a shared workspace where a team builds AI agents, which it calls coworkers, by chatting with them rather than writing code. An agent combines instructions, reusable skills, tools and its own folder of files, and can run on a schedule or when something happens in a connected app. People can reach agents in the web workspace, Slack or Telegram. Agenta is MIT-licensed and can be self-hosted, while Agenta Cloud is billed by agent runs instead of seats.
To get you started, here are 9 things to know about Agenta, taken from its own pages and our grades.
- 1

- 5
Agents built by chatting
You describe the job in chat and refine the agent's instructions and skills as you go. Prebuilt templates cover engineering, support, sales, knowledge and operations.
- 6
Automations and triggers
An agent can run on a schedule or start when an event happens in a connected tool, such as a new pull request. Every run is logged with its duration and estimated cost.
- 7
Integrations, MCP and skills
Agents work across more than 1,000 integrations and any MCP server you add. Skills are reusable instruction files that can be swapped without rewriting the agent.

That is against the other AI agents we grade, on value, the free plan, features, ease of use and platforms.

Keep it
To replace Agenta you would be making an AI agent, with the models and the safeguards behind it. That is not a weekend's work, with an AI app builder or without one.

The report card
Best for team agents on one flat price
Agenta is a shared workspace where a team builds AI coworkers by chatting with them, then sets them to run on a schedule or when something happens in another app. Pro is $29 a month for any number of people. The AI itself isn't included, so you pay your model provider too, runs past 10,000 a month cost extra, and SSO and access roles on the cloud wait for Business at $299.
| Subject | Grade | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| Value for money | C | Pro is $29 a month, which sits at the dearer end of what agent tools here charge. It covers any number of people, so the cost per head falls as your team grows, but model costs go straight to your provider on top and SSO on the cloud waits for the $299 plan. |
| Free plan and trial | B | Hobby is free and one person could really live on it: unlimited agents and workflows, 5,000 runs a month. The caps are 2 team members and 20 evaluations. Self-hosting is free and uncapped, but that's Docker Compose and your own model bill. |
| Features | B | It covers the job: build an agent by chatting, run it on a schedule or off an event like a new pull request, 1,000-plus integrations and any MCP server, approvals on risky actions, a vault for credentials and a trace of every run. |
| Ease of use | C | Building happens in chat with templates to start from, but nothing runs until you've connected your own model provider, and self-hosting means Docker Compose. No rating on record to go by either. |
| Platforms and integrations | B | A web workspace, with agents you can also talk to in Slack or Telegram, more than 1,000 integrations and an API. No phone or desktop app on the listing. |
An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.
Who Agenta is for
- Fits if you want one flat price for the whole team instead of paying per seat
- Works for jobs that repeat, like research briefs, code review and reports
Who it is not for
- Not for you if you want the AI included, because model costs go to your own provider
- Pricey if you need SSO or access roles on the cloud, which start at $299 a month
- Tight if three of you want to stay free, as Hobby stops at 2 team members and 5,000 runs a month
- Watch out: Pro includes 10,000 runs a month, then $5 per 10,000 more, and keeps traces for 1 month
- Watch out: running agents on a Claude or ChatGPT subscription works only self-hosted, which means Docker Compose
Good to know
Good for
- Teams that want to self-host their agent platform under an MIT license
- Paying by usage for a whole team instead of per seat
- Recurring jobs such as research briefs, code review and reports
Worth knowing
- AI model costs are not included: you connect your own provider credentials and pay the provider directly.
- The Hobby plan stops running agents after 5,000 runs in a month and allows 2 team members and 20 evaluations a month.
- On Agenta Cloud, SSO and role-based access control start at Business ($299 a month); audit logs and custom domains are Enterprise only.
- Running agents on a Claude or ChatGPT subscription works only on a self-hosted deployment, not on Agenta Cloud.

Keep it, or make your own?
Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.
Keep it
To replace Agenta you would be making an AI agent, with the models and the safeguards behind it. That is not a weekend's work, with an AI app builder or without one.
It costs $348 a year. Agenta is open source, so there is a third way: take its code and run it yourself.
What you could make
- Templates: an app builder makes this well.
What you could not
- An AI agent, with the models and the safeguards behind it.
- Connections to other products, each kept working as those products change.
- A builder that other people can use without writing code.
- What a company asks for before it lets staff use something: roles and permissions.
- The depth: we grade its features B, which means it covers the whole job.
What this rests on. Agenta’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
