Part 01 · Overview

Welcome

What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first

2.8

GPA, above 25 of the 43 other habit trackers we grade

Beaver Habit Tracker is an open-source, browser-based habit tracker by Henry Zhu, built for ticking off daily or periodic habits without setting goals. It can be used as a hosted service at beaverhabits.com or self-hosted with Docker, and it includes notes, categories, import and export, and a REST API. The hosted service has a free Basic plan and a Pro upgrade sold as a one-time lifetime license.

To get you started, here are 9 things to know about Beaver Habit Tracker, taken from its own pages and our grades.

No store rating on record, and no store apps either.
From our grade for ease of use

  5. 5

    Streaks without goals

Habits are ticked off day by day in a grid and shown as streaks. The app deliberately leaves out goals and targets.

  6. 6

    Daily notes and periodic habits

A note or description can be added to a day's entry, and a habit can follow a period such as every second weekend instead of every day.

  7. 7

    Habit management

Habits can be reordered, edited, duplicated or archived from a context menu and grouped by category. Light and dark themes and custom CSS are supported.

The report card

Best for plain streak ticking you can host yourself

Beaver Habit Tracker is a grid of ticks in a browser tab: no goals, no scores, no numbers. It's open source, you can run it on your own Docker box for nothing, and the hosted Pro license is $9.90 once. But there are no store apps, the native iOS client is still a TestFlight beta, the free plan's habit cap isn't published, and if your habits have numbers in them, look elsewhere.

ToolGPA report cardBeaver Habit TrackerGraded Oct 10, 2026
SubjectGradeComment
Value for moneyAPro is $9.90 once, a lifetime license with a 14-day return policy. The middle of this category asks $3.33 a month, so about three months of that buys Beaver outright and then never asks again. Running the BSD-3 code on your own box costs nothing.
Free plan and trialBThe hosted Basic plan is free, with notes and descriptions, import and export, and the REST API. Two things hold it back: unlimited habits and categories need Pro, and the Basic habit cap isn't published, so you don't know where the wall is until you hit it.
FeaturesCIt does the plain-ticking job fully: a day-by-day grid of streaks, a note on any day, periodic habits like every second weekend, categories, archiving and CSV import from Loop. That's a smaller job than this category's, and the listing says there are no goals, targets or counts at all, by design.
Ease of useCNo store rating on record, and no store apps either. The hosted version is a sign-up and a grid you tick, but running your own means Docker and a wiki page of environment variables.
Platforms and integrationsBWeb only, with a standalone web-app mode on iOS and a native iOS client still stuck in TestFlight beta. The REST API is what lifts it: community projects tick habits from Home Assistant, a Stream Deck, Apple Shortcuts and CalDAV.
Grade point averageGood, out of 4.02.8

An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.

Who Beaver Habit Tracker is for

  • Fits if you want a plain streak tracker with no goals or scores
  • Works for people who already run Docker, Unraid or Easypanel, or want to tick habits from an API or Home Assistant

Who it is not for

  • Skip it if you want a proper phone app, as it runs in a browser and the iOS client is only a TestFlight beta
  • Not for you if your habits have numbers in them, since goals and counts are left out by design
  • Tight if you're on hosted Basic, because the habit cap isn't published and categories need Pro
  • Watch out: daily backup is listed only under hosted Pro, so self-hosting means handling backups yourself

Good to know

Good for

  • People who want a plain streak tracker with no goals or scores
  • Self-hosters running Docker, Unraid or Easypanel
  • Ticking habits from an API, Home Assistant or a Stream Deck

Worth knowing

  • There are no store apps: it runs in a browser, with a standalone web-app mode on iOS, and a native iOS client is only in TestFlight beta.
  • On the hosted service, unlimited habits, categories and daily backup need the Pro license, and the Basic plan's habit cap is not published.
  • It has no goals by design: habits are ticked off per day, and the feature list includes no numeric targets or counts.
  • Self-hosting means running the Docker image yourself; the pricing section lists daily backup only under hosted Pro.

Keep it, or make your own?

Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.

Your call

A habit tracker at its plainest is a list of habits, a tick for each day and a count of the streak.

You could make the core of Beaver Habit Tracker for yourself: habit tracking. What you would give up is listed below. Whether that is worth the price is your call. At $9.90, paid once, it costs less than the weekend it would take to replace, which is the argument for keeping it. Beaver Habit Tracker is open source, so there is a third way: take its code and run it yourself.

What you could make

  • Habit tracking: an app builder makes this well.
  • It runs in a browser, which is where something home-made would run too.

What you could not

  • It is priced for each person, which means accounts and billing for a team.
  • It plugs into other products, Home Assistant, Stream Deck and Apple Shortcuts among them, and has an API.
  • Hooks into the device itself: Shortcuts.

What this rests on. Beaver Habit Tracker’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
