Part 01 · Overview
Welcome
What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first
2.4
GPA, above 19 of the 51 other email apps we grade
Boomerang is a browser extension that adds scheduling and follow-up tools to Gmail and Google Workspace email. It can send a message later, bring a message back to the inbox at a chosen time, remind you when nobody replies, and pause incoming mail. It also handles meeting scheduling from inside an email. A free Basic plan allows 10 message credits a month, and paid plans remove that limit and add the iPhone and Android apps.
To get you started, here are 9 things to know about Boomerang, taken from its own pages and our grades.
- 1
Best for sending later and chasing replies in Gmail
Boomerang is a Gmail add-on for timing your email: write it now and send it Monday, bring a message back on Thursday, get a nudge when nobody replies.
- 2
Paid plans start at $4.98 a month
As its pricing page puts it: $4.98 per month, billed annually (Personal, Gmail addresses only).
- 3
There is a free plan
Basic plan: 10 message credits a month for Gmail and Google Workspace, with Send Later, reminders, response tracking, read receipts, Inbox Pause and meeting scheduling. No mobile apps.
- 4
It runs on 2 platforms
iOS and Android, with a browser extension too.
- 5
Send Later
Write an email now and schedule it to send automatically, choosing the time from a calendar picker or by typing a phrase such as "next Monday".
- 6
Boomerang reminders
Archives a message and returns it to the inbox at the time you choose, marked unread, starred or placed at the top of the message list.
- 7

The report card
Best for sending later and chasing replies in Gmail
Boomerang is a Gmail add-on for timing your email: write it now and send it Monday, bring a message back on Thursday, get a nudge when nobody replies. A personal Gmail address pays $4.98 a month on yearly billing. The free plan stops at 10 message credits a month and has no phone apps, a work Google account needs Pro at $14.98, and Outlook needs a separate product.
| Subject | Grade | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| Value for money | C | Personal is $4.98 a month billed annually, a touch above this category's lowest-priced quarter, and it only covers @gmail.com addresses. A Google Workspace account needs Pro at $14.98, or $19.98 monthly, near the dear end for email tools. |
| Free plan and trial | C | Basic runs for good with Send Later, reminders, response tracking, read receipts and Inbox Pause, but 10 message credits a month is a cap you'll hit in a week, and the phone apps aren't in it. New accounts get 30 days of Professional with no card. |
| Features | C | Send Later, messages that come back when you choose, follow-up nudges, read receipts and click tracking, Inbox Pause and booking a meeting from inside an email. It does that job fully and it's a small one: timing and chasing added to Gmail, not a mail app. |
| Ease of use | B | No app rating on record, and nothing to set up: it's a browser extension that lives inside Gmail, and you can type a time like "next Monday" instead of using a date picker. |
| Platforms and integrations | B | A browser extension plus iPhone and Android apps on paid plans, with Zoom, Google Meet, Salesforce and GQueues connected. It's Gmail and Google Workspace only, though, and Boomerang for Outlook is a separate product with its own subscription. |
An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.
Who Boomerang is for
- Fits if you live in Gmail and write emails now to send later
- Works for people who chase replies all day and want a reminder when nobody answers
Who it is not for
- Skip it if your email isn't Gmail or Google Workspace; Boomerang for Outlook is a separate product and subscription
- Tight if you stay free, because 10 message credits a month go in about a week
- Pricey if you're on Google Workspace, where the lowest plan that works is Pro at $14.98, or $19.98 monthly
- Watch out: the iPhone and Android apps aren't on the free plan
- Pricey if you want the Salesforce link or GQueues, which need Premium at $49.98 a month
Good to know
Good for
- Gmail users who want scheduled sending and follow-up reminders
- People who arrange meetings by email rather than a separate tool
- Holding back incoming email to protect blocks of focus time
Worth knowing
- The free Basic plan allows 10 message credits a month, counted across Send Later, reminders, response tracking and read receipts.
- Personal is limited to @gmail.com addresses; Google Workspace accounts need Pro or Premium.
- The iPhone and Android apps are not part of the free Basic plan.
- This entry covers Boomerang for Gmail, a browser extension. Boomerang for Outlook is a separate product with its own subscription.

Keep it, or make your own?
Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.
Keep it
Nothing Boomerang does is plain enough to make in a weekend. The 4 things listed below take a company.
It costs $59.76 a year.
What you could not
- Booking pages that read and write other people's calendars and send the emails.
- A real app for iOS and Android. Something home-made would be a web page.
- It plugs into other products, Gmail, Google Workspace and Zoom among them.
- AI features, unless you pay a model provider for each request yourself.
What this rests on. Boomerang’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
