Welcome

What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first

2.6

GPA, above 50 of the 147 other note-taking apps we grade

EagleFiler is a Mac app from C-Command Software for filing documents, archiving email, saving web pages and writing notes, with search across all of it. A library is a set of ordinary files and folders in the Finder rather than a closed database, and it can be encrypted, split into several separate libraries, and tagged with tags that sync with Finder tags. It is sold as a one-time purchase with a 30-day trial.

To get you started, here are 9 things to know about EagleFiler, taken from its own pages and our grades.

The report card

Best for filing documents and old email on a Mac

EagleFiler is a Mac filing app: press a key and the web page, email or file in front of you is saved as ordinary files and folders in the Finder. It's $69.99 once. It runs on the Mac only with no iPhone or iPad app, still leans on Rosetta 2 on Apple silicon, major upgrades are free only within six months, and the App Store copy gets no family or upgrade pricing.

ToolGPA report cardEagleFilerGraded Oct 10, 2026
SubjectGradeComment
Value for moneyA$69.99 once, for one person or one computer, which is just under a year of this category's $6-a-month middle, and maintenance releases and minor features are free after that. A family in one household can share the 2-user licence at $111.98.
Free plan and trialCNo free plan. What you get is a fully functional 30-day trial with reminders popping up now and then, and the listing doesn't say a card is needed. A month is long enough to know whether it suits your filing.
FeaturesBA capture key that works from any app, email archiving from Apple Mail and Outlook with attachments and flags intact, web pages saved as archives or PDF, Boolean search inside files and attachments, nested tags that sync with Finder tags, smart folders, encrypted libraries. The filing job, covered.
Ease of useBNo store rating on record, so we go by the listing: press the capture key and whatever you're looking at is filed, and a library is plain Finder files and folders, so there's no new system to learn. It does still lean on Rosetta 2 on Apple silicon.
Platforms and integrationsDOne operating system. On an iPhone or iPad you can read a library kept in cloud storage with something like Files, but there's no EagleFiler app. On the Mac it works with Apple Mail, Outlook, Alfred, LaunchBar and ScanSnap scanners.
Grade point averageGood, out of 4.02.6

An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.

Who EagleFiler is for

  • Fits if you're going paperless on a Mac and want one place for every document
  • Works for people who want files kept in standard formats they can open without EagleFiler

Who it is not for

  • Skip it if you need your notes on your phone, as there's no EagleFiler app for iPhone or iPad
  • Not for you if you use Windows or Linux, because it only runs on a Mac
  • Tight if you buy from the Mac App Store, which gives no family packs, volume, educational or upgrade pricing
  • Watch out: it runs through Rosetta 2 on Apple silicon until a native rewrite the vendor says will land before macOS 28
  • Watch out: there's no free plan, and major upgrades are free only within six months of buying, then discounted

Good to know

Good for

  • Mac users running a paperless office or a long-term document archive
  • Moving large amounts of old email out of a mail program
  • People who want their files kept in standard formats in the Finder

Worth knowing

  • It is a Mac app only; on iPhone and iPad a library kept in cloud storage can be read with apps such as Files, but there is no EagleFiler app.
  • The app currently relies on Rosetta 2 on Apple silicon Macs; the vendor says a native rewrite will be finished before macOS 28.
  • Mac App Store purchases are single-user only and do not qualify for family packs, volume or educational discounts, or upgrade pricing.
  • Major version upgrades are free only within six months of buying the previous version; after that they are offered at a discount.

Keep it, or make your own?

Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.

Your call

A notes app at its plainest is text in folders with a search box.

You could make the core of EagleFiler for yourself: notes, Markdown, web clipper and bookmarks. What you would give up is listed below. Whether that is worth the price is your call. At $69.99, paid once, it costs less than the weekend it would take to replace, which is the argument for keeping it.

What you could make

  • Notes, Markdown, web clipper and bookmarks: an app builder makes these well.

What you could not

  • A real app for macOS. Something home-made would be a web page.
  • It plugs into other products, Apple Mail, Microsoft Outlook and Alfred among them.
  • The depth: we grade its features B, which means it covers the whole job.

What this rests on. EagleFiler’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
