Part 01 · Overview
Welcome
What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first
1.8
GPA, above 0 of the 18 other payroll services we grade
Employment Hero is an HR, payroll and hiring platform run from separate regional sites for Australia, New Zealand, the UK, Singapore, Malaysia and Canada. Its payroll handles each country's tax reporting, such as Single Touch Payroll in Australia and RTI in the UK, and an AI agent prepares pay runs for approval. HR, rostering and recruitment plans can be bought alongside it.
To get you started, here are 8 things to know about Employment Hero, taken from its own pages and our grades.
- 1
Best for Australian businesses with award rules
Employment Hero is payroll and HR for Australia, New Zealand, the UK, Singapore, Malaysia and Canada, and it's strong on Australian award rules and super.
- 2
What it costs
Paid plans start at A$10 per user / month for payroll, minimum 10 users (Australian dollars).
- 3
It runs on 3 platforms
Web, iOS and Android.
- 4
AI Payroll Agent
Hero AI prepares pay runs and flags anomalies for a person to approve, using the timesheet, leave and employee data already in the platform.
- 5
Australian payroll compliance
Handles Single Touch Payroll Phase 2, SuperStream, award interpretation and penalty rates, and pays super every pay run through HeroClear.
- 6
Payroll in other countries
Regional editions file UK RTI submissions with HMRC, New Zealand payday filing with Inland Revenue, Singapore CPF reports and Malaysian EPF and PCB.
- 7
A 1.8 GPA, above 0 of 18
That is against the other payroll services we grade, on value, the free plan, features, ease of use and platforms.
- 8
Keep it
To replace Employment Hero you would be making payroll taxes worked out and filed with the government for you. That is not a weekend's work, with an AI app builder or without one.

The report card
Best for Australian businesses with award rules
Employment Hero is payroll and HR for Australia, New Zealand, the UK, Singapore, Malaysia and Canada, and it's strong on Australian award rules and super. For a US reader, though, it's a no: there's no US edition, and prices are in Australian dollars with a 10-user minimum.
| Subject | Grade | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| Value for money | C | There's no US price: payroll is A$10 a user a month, in Australian dollars, with a 10-user minimum, so a team of five pays for ten, A$100 a month. With no US edition, a US team has nothing to buy here at any price. |
| Free plan and trial | F | No free plan or trial on record, and every plan bills for at least 10 users from the start. |
| Features | C | In its own countries it covers payroll well: Australian STP and super, UK RTI, New Zealand, Singapore and Malaysia filings, an AI agent that prepares pay runs, rostering and HR. But there's no US edition, so it can't pay a US team. |
| Ease of use | C | No App Store rating on record. An AI agent prepares each pay run for you to approve, but there are award rules, rosters and a 10-user account to set up first. |
| Platforms and integrations | B | Web, iPhone and Android, with the Work app for payslips, leave and shifts. Separate sites serve Australia, New Zealand, the UK, Singapore, Malaysia and Canada, but none serves the US. |
An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.
Who Employment Hero is for
- Great if you run payroll in Australia and need award interpretation and STP
- Handy when you have staff in the UK, New Zealand or Singapore and want one platform
- Good for teams of 10 or more who want rosters feeding straight into pay
Who it is not for
- Skip it if your staff are in the US, as there's no US edition
- Tight if you have fewer than 10 people, since every plan bills for at least 10
- Pricey if you want payroll run for you: Managed Payroll is A$20 an employee a month, A$400 at least
Good to know
Good for
- Australian businesses that need award interpretation and STP reporting
- Employers in New Zealand, the UK, Singapore or Malaysia wanting payroll and HR together
- Teams of 10 or more that want rostering feeding straight into pay
Worth knowing

- Every plan has a 10-user minimum, billed on the higher of the agreed number of users or the active users.
- Managed Payroll costs A$20 per employee a month (A$400 minimum), and rostering with time and attendance A$4 per employee a month.

It stands best on platforms and integrations (B, above 2 of 18) and worst on free plan and trial (F, above 0).

Keep it, or make your own?
Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.
Keep it
To replace Employment Hero you would be making payroll taxes worked out and filed with the government for you. That is not a weekend's work, with an AI app builder or without one.
That makes this kind of software worth paying for, not this one in particular: 18 of the 18 other payroll services grade higher.
What you could make
- Time tracking: an app builder makes this well.
What you could not
- Payroll taxes worked out and filed with the government for you.
- A real app for iOS and Android. Something home-made would be a web page.
- AI features, unless you pay a model provider for each request yourself.
What this rests on. Employment Hero’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
