Part 01 · Overview
Welcome
What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first
2.4
GPA, above 20 of the 79 other project management tools we grade
Float is resource management software for agencies, professional services firms and in-house delivery teams. Managers schedule people onto projects against their real capacity, with time off, roles, skills and rates in view, then compare the plan with logged time and with how budgets and margins are tracking. Pricing is per scheduled person, and people who only need to see the schedule can be added as free guests.
To get you started, here are 9 things to know about Float, taken from its own pages and our grades.
Timesheets on Pro come prefilled from the schedule, so there's less typing.
- 1
Best for scheduling people across client projects
Float is for scheduling people, not tracking tasks: who's on which project, how full their week is, and who's off, with budgets and utilization reports.
- 2
Paid plans start at $7 a month for each person
As its pricing page puts it: $7 per scheduled person / month, billed annually.
- 3
You can try it first
30-day free trial of the Pro plan, no credit card required
- 4
It runs on 3 platforms
Web, iOS and Android.
- 5
Resource scheduling
People are scheduled onto projects in hours or percentages. Placeholders add planned hires, contractors or shared equipment without using a seat: 1 on Starter, 5 on Pro.
- 6
Capacity and time off
Custom workdays and hours, global holiday calendars, departments, roles, skills and tags feed each person's capacity. Time off management is on every plan.
- 7
Project planning and budgets
Projects have phases, milestones, tasks, templates and budget tracking on every plan. Project cost estimates and expenses are Pro features.
- 8
A 2.4 GPA, above 20 of 79
That is against the other project management tools we grade, on value, the free plan, features, ease of use and platforms.
- 9
Keep it
The plain part of Float you could make: time tracking and reports. What surrounds it you could not. The 4 things listed below take a company, not a weekend.

The report card
Best for scheduling people across client projects
Float is for scheduling people, not tracking tasks: who's on which project, how full their week is, and who's off, with budgets and utilization reports. There's no free plan, just a 30-day trial, and timesheets, cost estimates, expenses and SSO need Pro at $12 a scheduled person a month. Starter keeps 7 days of activity, and there's no desktop app.
| Subject | Grade | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| Value for money | C | Starter is $7 a scheduled person a month billed annually, $8.50 monthly, which lands mid-pack for project tools. You only pay for people you actually schedule, and onlookers join free as guests. But timesheets, cost estimates and SSO all sit on Pro at $12, well above what this category charges to start. |
| Free plan and trial | C | No free plan. You get 30 days of Pro with no card asked for, and Float says it keeps your trial data for 6 months if you come back. After that it's pay or stop. |
| Features | C | It does its job fully: hours or percentages on projects, time off, holiday calendars, roles and skills, phases, budgets and utilization reports. That job is a smaller one than running projects, though, and timesheets, cost estimates and expenses are all Pro-only. |
| Ease of use | B | 4.65 on the App Store from 433 ratings, not a big crowd behind it. Timesheets on Pro come prefilled from the schedule, so there's less typing. |
| Platforms and integrations | B | Web, iPhone and Android, and the download page lists no desktop app at all. Google Calendar, Outlook Calendar, Slack, Zapier and API access come on every plan; it's the desktop that's missing. |
An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.
Who Float is for
- Fits if you run an agency or services firm and schedule people across client projects
- Works for teams with lots of onlookers, since people who aren't scheduled join free as guests
Who it is not for
- Not for you if you want a board for your own tasks, because this is about scheduling people
- Skip it if you want to stay free, as there's only a 30-day trial
- Pricey if you need timesheets, cost estimates or SSO, which need Pro at $12 a scheduled person a month
- Tight if you're on Starter: 7 days of activity feed, 1 placeholder and personal saved views only
- Skip it if you want a desktop app, as the download page lists only iOS and Android
Good to know
Good for
- Agencies and services firms scheduling people across client projects
- Resource managers who need capacity and utilization in one view
- Teams with many viewers, since people who are not scheduled join free as guests
Worth knowing
- There is no free plan. After the 30-day trial a paid plan is needed, though Float says it keeps trial data for 6 months.
- Time tracking, project cost estimates, expenses, SSO and team-enforced 2FA all need the Pro plan.
- Starter keeps the activity feed for 7 days, includes 1 placeholder and limits saved filtered views to personal ones.
- The download page offers iOS and Android apps only; no desktop app is listed.

Keep it, or make your own?
Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.
Keep it
The plain part of Float you could make: time tracking and reports. What surrounds it you could not. The 4 things listed below take a company, not a weekend.
That makes this kind of software worth paying for, not this one in particular: 38 of the 79 other project management tools grade higher. It costs $84 a year.
What you could make
- Time tracking and reports: an app builder makes these well.
What you could not
- A real app for iOS and Android. Something home-made would be a web page.
- It is priced for each person, which means accounts and billing for a team.
- It plugs into other products, Google Calendar, Outlook Calendar and Slack among them, and has an API.
- AI features, unless you pay a model provider for each request yourself.
What this rests on. Float’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
