Part 01 · Overview
Welcome
What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first
2.4
GPA, above 8 of the 19 other business phone systems we grade
Google Voice is Google's cloud phone service. A free personal version gives a US number for calls, texts and transcribed voicemail on phones, the web and in Gmail. Paid single-user plans add call recording, desk phones and 24/7 support, and team plans are add-ons to a paid Google Workspace subscription, with auto attendants, ring groups and Gemini call notes.
To get you started, here are 9 things to know about Google Voice, taken from its own pages and our grades.
On your own in the US, the free version makes a decent second number.
- 1
Best for a free US number, or calling for Workspace teams
Without a paid Workspace plan, though, the team plans aren't open to you.
- 2
Paid plans start at $10 a month for each person
As its pricing page puts it: $10 per month for one user; team plans $10 per user / month plus Workspace.
- 3
There is a free plan
Google Voice for personal Gmail accounts, US only: one number, unlimited US calls and texts, and voicemail transcripts. Needs an existing mobile number.
- 4
It runs on 3 platforms
Web, iOS and Android.
- 5
One number on every device
A single number rings on Android, iPhone and iPad apps, on the web and in Gmail, and on supported desk phones from the paid plans up.
- 6
Voicemail transcription and spam blocking
Voicemails are transcribed to text on every plan, and Google AI filters spam calls. Voicemails and texts can arrive in Gmail.
- 7
Gemini call notes
From Standard up, Gemini records and transcribes a call and writes notes from it. The notes are available in English.
- 8
A 2.4 GPA, above 8 of 19
That is against the other business phone systems we grade, on value, the free plan, features, ease of use and platforms.
- 9
Keep it
To replace Google Voice you would be making phone numbers and calls carried over the phone network. That is not a weekend's work, with an AI app builder or without one.

The report card
Best for a free US number, or calling for Workspace teams
Google Voice is the easy pick if your team already pays for Google Workspace: $10 a person a month adds a number that rings on phones, the web and Gmail. Without a paid Workspace plan, though, the team plans aren't open to you. On your own in the US, the free version makes a decent second number.
| Subject | Grade | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| Value for money | C | $10 a head for five on the Starter add-on, cheap on its own. But every team plan sits on top of a paid Google Workspace plan billed separately, so unless you already pay for Workspace the real cost per head lands mid-pack. Alone, it's $10. |
| Free plan and trial | B | The personal version is free: a US number with unlimited US calls and texts and voicemail transcripts. One person could live on it, but there's no recording or 911, it needs an existing mobile number, and teams get nothing free. |
| Features | C | Calls, texts, transcribed voicemail, spam filtering and Gemini call notes, with auto attendants, ring groups and queues higher up. The gaps: no CRM links beyond Google's own apps, unlimited texting is US only, and team plans need Workspace. |
| Ease of use | C | 4.26 from about 62,000 App Store ratings, a little behind the other big names here. Team plans are set up through the Workspace admin console. |
| Platforms and integrations | B | Web, iPhone, iPad and Android, plus Gmail, Calendar, Meet, Vault and BigQuery. There's no desktop app, and a service that's web and phones only tops out here. |
An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.
Who Google Voice is for
- Great if your team already pays for Google Workspace and lives in Gmail
- Handy when you just want a free second number in the US for a side business
- Good for companies that need calls and texts kept in Vault for eDiscovery
Who it is not for
- Skip it if you don't pay for Google Workspace, since every team plan needs it
- Not for you if you're outside the US and want the free or single-user plans
- Tight if you want every call recorded automatically, which needs Premier at $30 a person
Good to know
Good for
- Individuals in the US who want a free second number
- Teams already paying for Google Workspace
- Businesses that live in Gmail and Google Calendar
Worth knowing
- Team plans are add-ons to a paid Google Workspace plan billed separately; the Starter add-on stops at 10 users.
- The free and single-user plans are US only; team plans offer local numbers in 14 countries, and unlimited texting is US only on every plan.
- The free version needs an existing phone number to verify the account and has no call recording, desk phones or 911 support.
- Auto attendants need Standard, ring groups need the Workspace Standard add-on, and automatic call recording needs Premier.

Keep it, or make your own?
Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.
Keep it
To replace Google Voice you would be making phone numbers and calls carried over the phone network. That is not a weekend's work, with an AI app builder or without one.
It costs $120 a year.
What you could not
- Phone numbers and calls carried over the phone network.
- Texts from a business number, registered with the carriers.
- Speech turned into text you can trust.
- A real app for iOS and Android. Something home-made would be a web page.
- It is priced for each person, which means accounts and billing for a team.
- It plugs into other products, Gmail, Google Calendar and Google Meet among them.
- AI features, unless you pay a model provider for each request yourself.
- What a company asks for before it lets staff use something: roles and permissions.
What this rests on. Google Voice’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
