Part 01 · Overview
Welcome
What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first
2.8
GPA, above 7 of the 13 other website and product analytics tools we grade
Hotjar is now part of Contentsquare, and new users sign up there instead: Hotjar accounts log in with the same credentials. Its Experience Analytics plans keep what Hotjar was known for, heatmaps, session recordings and surveys, and add funnels, journey analysis, error and performance monitoring, and Sense AI summaries. A free plan covers up to 200,000 sessions a month; paid plans are priced by monthly sessions.
To get you started, here are 9 things to know about Contentsquare, taken from its own pages and our grades.
- 1
Best for heatmaps and replays of a marketing site
Contentsquare is where Hotjar lives now: heatmaps, replays and surveys, plus funnels, journeys and error monitoring.
- 2
Paid plans start at $39 a month
As its pricing page puts it: $39 per month for up to 7k sessions, billed yearly ($49 billed monthly).
- 3
There is a free plan
Free forever: up to 200k sessions a month with replays of 5% of them (max 10k), heatmaps, funnels, error monitoring, basic surveys, 1 project and 1 month of data.
- 4
It runs on Web
Web.
- 5
Heatmaps and attention maps
Shows where visitors click, hover and scroll, with attention maps for engagement; zone heatmaps and side-by-side comparisons start on Growth.
- 6
Session replays
Replays of real visits to spot struggles and errors. Free records 5% of sessions and Growth 15%; Pro and Enterprise can record all of them.
- 7
Funnels and journeys
Funnels on every plan show where people drop off; Growth links funnels to replays and adds journey analysis and impact estimates.
- 8
A 2.8 GPA, above 7 of 13
That is against the other website and product analytics tools we grade, on value, the free plan, features, ease of use and platforms.

The report card
Best for heatmaps and replays of a marketing site
Contentsquare is where Hotjar lives now: heatmaps, replays and surveys, plus funnels, journeys and error monitoring. The free plan covers up to 200k sessions a month, which is plenty for a small site. The catch is that it records only 5% of them, and recording every visit takes a plan priced through sales.
| Subject | Grade | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| Value for money | B | $0: the free plan covers up to 200k sessions, so a 10,000-visitor site fits, but it records only 5% of visits. Recording more starts with Growth at $39 a month billed yearly for just 7k sessions, fewer than this site has. Graded against Clarity, which records everything free, that's a B. |
| Free plan and trial | B | Free forever up to 200k sessions, with heatmaps, funnels, error monitoring and basic surveys, so one person can live on it. The limits: 5% of sessions recorded, up to 10k, 1 project and 1 month of data. |
| Features | B | Heatmaps, attention maps, replays, funnels, journeys, error and Core Web Vitals monitoring, surveys and Sense AI summaries. That's the whole experience analytics job, though Free and Growth record only a share of visits and APIs need Pro. |
| Ease of use | C | No rating on record. A snippet starts the heatmaps and replays, but Hotjar now sits inside Contentsquare's bigger platform, new users sign up there, and journeys, projects and surveys take some learning. |
| Platforms and integrations | B | Web only, with no desktop or phone app. It connects to Google Analytics, Jira, HubSpot, Slack, Microsoft Teams, Unbounce, Optimizely and AB Tasty, and AI assistants can plug in through MCP on every plan. |
An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.
Who Contentsquare is for
- Great if you're a marketer who wants to see where visitors click and scroll
- Handy when you want short surveys tied to the replays they came from
- Good for small sites that fit in 200k sessions and don't need every visit recorded
Who it is not for
- Skip it if you want every visit recorded for free, which Clarity does
- Pricey if you want lots of survey answers, as more than 100 a month is a plan from $79 a month
- Tight if you're on Growth, which records only 15% of sessions
Good to know
Good for
- Marketers and designers who want to see how visitors use a page
- Former Hotjar users moving to the Contentsquare plans
- Small sites that fit in the free 200k-session allowance
Worth knowing
- New Hotjar accounts can no longer be created; new users sign up for Contentsquare, and existing Hotjar users log in there.
- Free and Growth record only a share of sessions (5% up to 10k, and 15%); recording every session needs Pro or Enterprise.
- Surveys beyond 100 responses a month are a separate Voice of Customer plan starting at $79 a month.
- APIs, alerts, form analysis and Adobe Analytics integration need Pro or Enterprise, priced through sales.

Keep it, or make your own?
Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.
Keep it
The plain part of Contentsquare you could make: surveys. What surrounds it you could not. The 6 things listed below take a company, not a weekend.
It costs $468 a year.
What you could make
- Surveys: an app builder makes this well.
What you could not
- Recordings of what each visitor did on your pages.
- A tracking script and a database that counts every visit.
- It plugs into other products, Google Analytics, Jira and HubSpot among them.
- AI features, unless you pay a model provider for each request yourself.
- Hooks into the device itself: widgets.
- The depth: we grade its features B, which means it covers the whole job.
What this rests on. Contentsquare’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
