The report card
Best for home service crews that take bookings online
Housecall Pro covers the whole home-service day, from online booking and dispatch to invoices and card payments, and techs can use the app in Spanish. The catch for a small crew is that Basic holds just 1 user, so three of you start on Essentials at $149 a month billed yearly.
| Subject | Grade | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| Value for money | C | Basic is $59 a month but holds 1 user, so a crew of three starts on Essentials: $149 a month billed yearly ($189 monthly) for up to 5 users. That's the middle of what this category charges. Route optimization and service plans wait for Max at $299. |
| Free plan and trial | C | A 14-day trial of the Max plan with no card needed, which is the usual deal here. There's no free plan to fall back on afterwards. |
| Features | B | Online booking, scheduling and dispatch, estimates, invoices, card and bank payments, a price book, job costing and review requests, with routes, GPS and checklists on Essentials. That's the whole job. AI call answering and payroll cost extra. |
| Ease of use | B | 4.65 from 31,013 App Store ratings, more ratings than any other app in this category. The crew app runs in English and Spanish and techs can still view jobs offline. |
| Platforms and integrations | B | Web, iPhone and Android, with QuickBooks, Thumbtack, Google Local Services, Gusto, Mailchimp and CompanyCam. Zapier and the open API need Max, and there's no desktop app. |
An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.
Who Housecall Pro is for
- Great if you run an HVAC, plumbing or cleaning crew and want bookings, jobs and payments in one app
- Handy when some of your techs would rather use the app in Spanish
- Good for teams that win work through Thumbtack or Google Local Services
Who it is not for
- Pricey if you need route optimization or service plans, which only come with Max at $299 a month
- Skip it if you want AI call answering or payroll priced up front, as both are add-ons with no price shown
- Not for you if you want Zapier or the API on a small plan, since both are Max only

Good for
- Home service trades such as HVAC, plumbing, electrical and cleaning
- Owner-operators who want booking, dispatch and payments in one app

Keep it, or make your own?
Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.
Keep it
The plain part of Housecall Pro you could make: job scheduling, quotes and estimates, invoicing, appointment booking and review collection. What surrounds it you could not. The 3 things listed below take a company, not a weekend.
It costs $708 a year.
What you could make
- Job scheduling, quotes and estimates, invoicing, appointment booking and review collection: an app builder makes these well.
What you could not
- A real app for iOS and Android. Something home-made would be a web page.
- It plugs into other products, QuickBooks, Thumbtack and Google Local Services among them, and has an API.
- The depth: we grade its features B, which means it covers the whole job.
What this rests on. Housecall Pro’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
