Part 01 · Overview

Welcome

What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first

2.2

GPA, above 2 of the 35 other journaling apps we grade

Life Note is an AI journaling app for the web, iOS and Android. Each entry gets a written reply from an AI mentor modeled on the writings of a historical figure, and the exchange can continue as a follow-up chat. The app also transcribes voice entries, charts emotions over time and sends a weekly letter with a generated artwork. The free tier allows three entries a week; a subscription removes that cap and raises the number of mentor replies per entry.

To get you started, here are 9 things to know about Life Note, taken from its own pages and our grades.

Each entry gets a reply from an AI mentor modelled on a historical thinker, and you can keep the conversation going.
From our report card of Life Note
  1. 1

Best for getting a written reply to every entry

Life Note is a journal that writes back.

  2. 2

Paid plans start at $8.33 a month when paid by the year

As its pricing page puts it: $10.99 per month, or $99.99 per year.

  3. 3

    There is a free plan

Free: 3 journal entries a week (10 in the first seven days), 1 mentor response per entry, limited Deep Chat and 10 voice recordings a week. Import, export and the app lock are included.

  4. 4

    It runs on 3 platforms

    Web, iOS and Android.

  5. 5

    Replies from AI mentors

Each entry is answered by an AI mentor drawn from more than 1,000 historical figures. Free accounts get one response per entry and subscribers up to three, from different mentors.

  6. 6

    Deep Chat

A mentor's reply can be continued as a conversation with follow-up questions, and past conversations can be archived. Free accounts have limited usage.

  7. 7

    Weekly Letter and Inner Portrait

Write three entries in a week and a mentor sends a letter on Sunday along with a generated artwork of the week. Both are available without a subscription.

  8. 8

    A 2.2 GPA, above 2 of 35

That is against the other journaling apps we grade, on value, the free plan, features, ease of use and platforms.

  9. 9

    Keep it

To replace Life Note you would be making an AI model, which you can rent by the request but not make. That is not a weekend's work, with an AI app builder or without one.

The report card

Best for getting a written reply to every entry

Life Note is a journal that writes back. Each entry gets a reply from an AI mentor modelled on a historical thinker, and you can keep the conversation going. But free stops at three entries a week, Premium is $10.99 a month, and its own security guide says it isn't end-to-end encrypted in the strict sense, because the mentors have to read what you wrote.

ToolGPA report cardLife NoteGraded Oct 10, 2026
SubjectGradeComment
Value for moneyDPremium is $10.99 a month, or $99.99 a year, which is $8.33 a month where the middle for journaling apps here is $4.17 and the dearest tenth starts at $10.75. The thing you'd actually be paying for, a journal you can write in daily, sits on that plan.
Free plan and trialCFree gets 3 entries a week, 10 in your first seven days, one mentor reply an entry and 10 voice recordings a week, with import, export and the app lock thrown in. Three entries a week is not a daily journal, so the cap arrives on Thursday.
FeaturesCIt does the AI-reply journal fully: more than 1,000 mentors, follow-up chat, voice entries turned into text, charts of your feelings, a Sunday letter with artwork, and import from Day One, Journey and Reflectly. The gap its own guide names: this isn't end-to-end encrypted, because mentors must read what you wrote.
Ease of useBNo rating on record, but there's nothing to set up: you write an entry and a reply turns up. Some parts need a run-up, mind. Emotional trends appear after 3 entries and questions about your own history after 10.
Platforms and integrationsBWeb plus both phones, with no desktop app, so on a computer it's the browser and the App Store listing is designed for iPhone. It does connect out: a read-only connector lets Claude, ChatGPT or Gemini read the journal, though not add to it.
Grade point averageFair, out of 4.02.2

An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.

Who Life Note is for

  • Fits if a blank page puts you off and you'd like something to answer back
  • Works for moving from Day One, Journey or Reflectly, since their exports import for free

Who it is not for

  • Tight if you're staying free and write daily, because the cap is 3 entries a week
  • Skip it if you want entries nobody else's software can read, as the mentors must read them to reply
  • Pricey if all you want is a plain diary, at $8.33 a month on the yearly plan against a middle of $4.17
  • Not for you if you want a desktop app, as computers get the browser and the App Store app is built for iPhone
  • Watch out: the homepage says end-to-end encrypted while its security guide says not strictly, and the AI connector is read-only

Good to know

Good for

  • People who want a written response to each entry instead of a blank page
  • Readers of philosophy and psychology who want replies styled on a chosen thinker
  • Journal keepers moving from Day One, Journey or Reflectly, whose exports import free

Worth knowing

  • Free accounts are limited to 3 journal entries a week and 1 mentor response per entry.
  • The security guide says Life Note is not end-to-end encrypted in the strict sense, because mentors must read entries to reply, although the homepage uses that term.
  • No desktop app is listed: on a computer it runs in the browser, and the App Store listing is designed for iPhone.
  • The connector for Claude, ChatGPT and other MCP clients is read-only, so an assistant cannot add entries.

Keep it, or make your own?

Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.

Keep it

To replace Life Note you would be making an AI model, which you can rent by the request but not make. That is not a weekend's work, with an AI app builder or without one.

That makes this kind of software worth paying for, not this one in particular: 29 of the 35 other journaling apps grade higher. It costs $99.99 a year.

What you could make

  • Daily notes, mood tracking and goals: an app builder makes these well.

What you could not

  • An AI model, which you can rent by the request but not make.
  • Dictation that types into any app on your computer.
  • A real app for iOS and Android. Something home-made would be a web page.
  • It plugs into other products, Claude, ChatGPT and Gemini among them.

What this rests on. Life Note’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
