Value for money
BPremium is $10.99 a month or $99.99 a year, which works out at about $8.33 a month. That's above the $4.99 a typical journal app starts at, but you're paying for AI replies and voice transcription, and it's in line with the other AI journals we list.
CBloom is $12.99 a month, or $107.99 a year, which works out at $8.99 a month. That's nearly double a typical journaling app, and it still comes with a weekly AI usage limit. A bigger budget means Thrive, listed at $24.99 and $59.99 in the mobile apps.
Free plan and trial
BFree gets you 3 entries a week (10 in your first seven days), one mentor reply per entry and 10 voice recordings a week. Import, export and the app lock are included. But three entries a week isn't a daily journal.
CThere's no free plan now. Rosebud's help centre says it was retired on September 30, 2026, even though the homepage still calls Rosebud free to use. Bloom has a free trial, but the pricing section doesn't say how long it lasts.
Features
AReplies from more than 1,000 mentors, follow-up chat, voice entries turned into text, charts of your feelings over time and a Sunday letter with a generated artwork. It imports from Day One, Journey and Reflectly, and exports to CSV, JSON or Markdown.
ADig Deeper adds a perspective and a follow-up question as you write. There are morning and evening check-ins, guided journals drawing on CBT and ACT, hands-free voice entries, a weekly report of moods and themes, and Ask Rosebud, which answers questions from your own journal.
Ease of use
BNo App Store rating on record, so B is as high as we go. You write an entry and a reply turns up, so there's not much to learn. Some parts need a run-up: emotional trends appear after 3 entries, and questions about your own history after 10.
A4.9 from about 3,300 App Store ratings. You write or just talk, and the AI keeps the conversation going, so you're never stuck for what to say next. Responses can be read back aloud too.
Platforms and integrations
AWeb, iPhone and Android, plus a read-only connector that lets Claude or ChatGPT read your journal. There's no desktop app, so on a computer it's the browser, and the App Store listing is designed for iPhone.
BiOS, Android and the web. But the web app is a companion: custom journals, photos, handwriting scans and the choice of AI model are mobile-only. No integrations or API are listed, and the Thrive tiers are sold only in the mobile apps.

Who each one suits

Life Note

  • People who want a written response to each entry instead of a blank page
  • Readers of philosophy and psychology who want replies styled on a chosen thinker
  • Journal keepers moving from Day One, Journey or Reflectly, whose exports import free

Rosebud

  • People who want an AI that asks follow-up questions as they write
  • Speaking entries aloud instead of typing them
  • Weekly summaries of moods, themes and patterns across entries

Worth knowing

Life Note

  • Free accounts are limited to 3 journal entries a week and 1 mentor response per entry.
  • The security guide says Life Note is not end-to-end encrypted in the strict sense, because mentors must read entries to reply, although the homepage uses that term.
  • No desktop app is listed: on a computer it runs in the browser, and the App Store listing is designed for iPhone.
  • The connector for Claude, ChatGPT and other MCP clients is read-only, so an assistant cannot add entries.

Rosebud

  • The help center says the free plan was retired on September 30, 2026, although the homepage still calls Rosebud free to use.
  • AI features run on a weekly usage limit; at 100% Dig Deeper is blocked until the limit resets.
  • The web app is a companion: custom journals, photos, handwriting scans and AI model choice are mobile-only.
  • Thrive tiers with larger usage budgets are sold only through the iOS and Android apps.

Key features

Life Note

Replies from AI mentors
Each entry is answered by an AI mentor drawn from more than 1,000 historical figures. Free accounts get one response per entry and subscribers up to three, from different mentors.
Deep Chat
A mentor's reply can be continued as a conversation with follow-up questions, and past conversations can be archived. Free accounts have limited usage.
Weekly Letter and Inner Portrait
Write three entries in a week and a mentor sends a letter on Sunday along with a generated artwork of the week. Both are available without a subscription.
Voice journaling
Spoken entries are recorded and transcribed into the journal. Free accounts get 10 recordings a week and subscribers 200 a month.
Inner Weather and Inner Wisdom
Inner Weather shows top feelings and emotional trends after 3 entries. Inner Wisdom answers questions from your own journal history once you have 10 entries.
Import, export and AI connections
Takes export files from Day One, Journey, Reflectly, ChatGPT and Claude, and exports to CSV, JSON, Markdown or ZIP. A read-only MCP connector lets Claude or ChatGPT read the journal.

Rosebud

Dig Deeper
While composing an entry you can ask the AI to go deeper: Interactive mode adds a perspective and one follow-up question, and Focused mode offers three questions to choose from.
Guided journals and daily check-ins
Morning intention and evening reflection check-ins sit beside guided journals developed with mental health professionals, drawing on methods such as CBT and ACT.
Voice journaling
Entries can be spoken with voice transcription and a hands-free mode, and responses can be read back aloud. A glossary keeps up to 10 names or words transcribed accurately.
Weekly report
Each week Rosebud summarizes your entries with writing stats, mood trends, key themes and the people mentioned, including up to five key insights.
Long-term memory and Ask Rosebud
Bloom recalls earlier entries for continuity, and Ask Rosebud answers questions about your life from your journal, with links to the related entries.
Privacy and export
Data is encrypted in transit and at rest, the app can be locked with Face ID, Touch ID or a PIN, and entries can be exported to Markdown.
