Value for money
CGenius is $129 a year, which is $10.75 a month, or $14.99 paid monthly. A typical journal app starts at $4.99 and even the dearer ones at about $8.99. There's 40% off for students, over-65s and people with a disability, if you email and ask.
CBloom is $12.99 a month, or $107.99 a year, which works out at $8.99 a month. That's nearly double a typical journaling app, and it still comes with a weekly AI usage limit. A bigger budget means Thrive, listed at $24.99 and $59.99 in the mobile apps.
Free plan and trial
BThe Curious plan is free for good: a clean journal with a streak tracker, passcode, tags, export and 52+ framework templates. But no AI at all, and AI is the reason you'd pick Mindsera. A trial of Genius is offered at sign-up, with no length given.
CThere's no free plan now. Rosebud's help centre says it was retired on September 30, 2026, even though the homepage still calls Rosebud free to use. Bloom has a free trial, but the pricing section doesn't say how long it lasts.
Features
AType, dictate, talk it through in Call Mode or photograph a paper page. AI personas comment on your entry, each one gets broken into themes and emotions, and Ask Your Journal lets you question your whole history. It emails a weekly review too. All of that needs Genius.
ADig Deeper adds a perspective and a follow-up question as you write. There are morning and evening check-ins, guided journals drawing on CBT and ACT, hands-free voice entries, a weekly report of moods and themes, and Ask Rosebud, which answers questions from your own journal.
Ease of use
BNo App Store rating on record, so B is as high as we go. It opens on a blank page, and the AI comes to you with questions. One catch: the AI is tuned for English, and Mindsera won't vouch for it in other languages.
A4.9 from about 3,300 App Store ratings. You write or just talk, and the AI keeps the conversation going, so you're never stuck for what to say next. Responses can be read back aloud too.
Platforms and integrations
AWeb, iPhone and Android, with Apple Health and a connector that lets Claude, ChatGPT and Gemini search and add entries. No Mac or Windows app is listed, so a computer means the browser.
BiOS, Android and the web. But the web app is a companion: custom journals, photos, handwriting scans and the choice of AI model are mobile-only. No integrations or API are listed, and the Thrive tiers are sold only in the mobile apps.

Who each one suits

Mindsera

  • People who want AI feedback and follow-up questions on what they write
  • Tracking emotional patterns and recurring themes across months of entries
  • Structured reflection with mental-model and CBT templates

Rosebud

  • People who want an AI that asks follow-up questions as they write
  • Speaking entries aloud instead of typing them
  • Weekly summaries of moods, themes and patterns across entries

Worth knowing

Mindsera

  • Every AI feature, including prompts, voice journaling and analysis, needs the paid Genius plan; the free plan is a plain journal.
  • Not end-to-end encrypted: the vendor says AI needs backend access, so entries are encrypted at rest and in transit instead.
  • AI features are optimized for English, and the vendor does not guarantee their quality in other languages.
  • No Mac or Windows app is listed; desktop use is through the web app, which is also the only place entries can be imported.

Rosebud

  • The help center says the free plan was retired on September 30, 2026, although the homepage still calls Rosebud free to use.
  • AI features run on a weekly usage limit; at 100% Dig Deeper is blocked until the limit resets.
  • The web app is a companion: custom journals, photos, handwriting scans and AI model choice are mobile-only.
  • Thrive tiers with larger usage budgets are sold only through the iOS and Android apps.

Key features

Mindsera

Write, speak or scan
Type on a blank page, dictate with Voice Mode, hold a spoken back-and-forth in Call Mode, or photograph a handwritten journal page to turn it into text. The voice and scan modes need Genius.
Go Deeper prompts
A conversational mode connects what you are writing to earlier entries and asks follow-up questions, with presets such as Psychologist, CBT Coach and Stoic.
Minds comments
AI personas called Minds highlight parts of an entry and comment on them. Built-in Minds include Alternative Perspectives, Thinking Traps and Stoic Principles, and you can create your own.
Entry and long-term analysis
Each entry gets a breakdown of themes, emotions and takeaways. Over time the app charts emotions, detects recurring topics, builds a Big Five personality profile and emails a weekly review.
Ask Your Journal and MCP
Chat with your full journal history to surface patterns. On the paid plan an MCP connector lets assistants such as Claude, ChatGPT and Gemini search entries and add new ones.
Framework templates
More than 50 writing templates based on mental models, such as First Principles, Ikigai and CBT journaling, plus custom frameworks. These are included in the free plan.

Rosebud

Dig Deeper
While composing an entry you can ask the AI to go deeper: Interactive mode adds a perspective and one follow-up question, and Focused mode offers three questions to choose from.
Guided journals and daily check-ins
Morning intention and evening reflection check-ins sit beside guided journals developed with mental health professionals, drawing on methods such as CBT and ACT.
Voice journaling
Entries can be spoken with voice transcription and a hands-free mode, and responses can be read back aloud. A glossary keeps up to 10 names or words transcribed accurately.
Weekly report
Each week Rosebud summarizes your entries with writing stats, mood trends, key themes and the people mentioned, including up to five key insights.
Long-term memory and Ask Rosebud
Bloom recalls earlier entries for continuity, and Ask Rosebud answers questions about your life from your journal, with links to the related entries.
Privacy and export
Data is encrypted in transit and at rest, the app can be locked with Face ID, Touch ID or a PIN, and entries can be exported to Markdown.
