Who each one suits
Day One
- People who want one journal across Apple, Android, Windows and the web
- Journals that mix writing with photos, video, audio and drawings
- Writers who want end-to-end encryption without paying
Mindsera
- People who want AI feedback and follow-up questions on what they write
- Tracking emotional patterns and recurring themes across months of entries
- Structured reflection with mental-model and CBT templates
Worth knowing
Day One
- The free Basic plan is limited to 1 device and 1 photo per entry; video, audio, drawings and collections need Silver.
- Paid plans are sold as annual subscriptions only; Day One's help guides say monthly plans are not offered.
- AI features are limited to Gold at $74.99 per year and have daily usage limits.
- Silver and Gold subscriptions cannot be shared through Apple Family Sharing.
Mindsera
- Every AI feature, including prompts, voice journaling and analysis, needs the paid Genius plan; the free plan is a plain journal.
- Not end-to-end encrypted: the vendor says AI needs backend access, so entries are encrypted at rest and in transit instead.
- AI features are optimized for English, and the vendor does not guarantee their quality in other languages.
- No Mac or Windows app is listed; desktop use is through the web app, which is also the only place entries can be imported.
Key features
Day One
- Multimedia entries
- Entries combine Markdown-formatted text with photos, video, audio recordings, drawings and scanned PDFs. Basic allows 1 photo per entry; Silver and Gold allow 30 media items.
- End-to-end encryption and app lock
- Every plan, including the free one, lists end-to-end encryption, passcode protection, biometric lock and secure cloud backup.
- Prompts, templates and streaks
- A daily prompt, a prompt gallery, journal templates, reminders and journal streaks are included on all three plans.
- On This Day, calendar and map views
- On This Day resurfaces entries from the same date in past years, and entries can also be browsed by calendar, map or media.
- Sync across devices
- Silver and Gold sync a journal across an unlimited number of devices. Basic backs up from one active device, with web access included.
- AI reflection tools
- Gold adds Daily Chat for guided reflection, Go Deeper prompts, entry summaries, title suggestions and image generation, each with daily usage limits.
Mindsera
- Write, speak or scan
- Type on a blank page, dictate with Voice Mode, hold a spoken back-and-forth in Call Mode, or photograph a handwritten journal page to turn it into text. The voice and scan modes need Genius.
- Go Deeper prompts
- A conversational mode connects what you are writing to earlier entries and asks follow-up questions, with presets such as Psychologist, CBT Coach and Stoic.
- Minds comments
- AI personas called Minds highlight parts of an entry and comment on them. Built-in Minds include Alternative Perspectives, Thinking Traps and Stoic Principles, and you can create your own.
- Entry and long-term analysis
- Each entry gets a breakdown of themes, emotions and takeaways. Over time the app charts emotions, detects recurring topics, builds a Big Five personality profile and emails a weekly review.
- Ask Your Journal and MCP
- Chat with your full journal history to surface patterns. On the paid plan an MCP connector lets assistants such as Claude, ChatGPT and Gemini search entries and add new ones.
- Framework templates
- More than 50 writing templates based on mental models, such as First Principles, Ikigai and CBT journaling, plus custom frameworks. These are included in the free plan.
