Part 01 · Overview
Welcome
What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first
2.8
GPA, above 57 of the 94 other desktop utilities we grade
Maccy is an open-source clipboard manager for macOS that keeps a searchable history of what you copy and deliberately does little else. It is driven from the keyboard: open the history, type to filter and press Enter. The history is stored only on the Mac. The app is free from GitHub or Homebrew, while the download buttons on its website lead to paid copies that fund development.
To get you started, here are 9 things to know about Maccy, taken from its own pages and our grades.
No store rating on record, but there's nothing to set up: Shift-Command-C opens the history, you type to filter and press Enter.

The report card
Best for a no-frills clipboard history on the Mac
Maccy keeps a searchable history of what you copy on a Mac, and nothing more, by design. It's free from GitHub or Homebrew, but the buttons on its own website lead to paid copies at $4.99 or more, and the Mac App Store one is $9.99. Clips don't sync to other devices, it leaves out the extras other clipboard managers have, and it needs macOS Sonoma 14 or later.
| Subject | Grade | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| Value for money | A | Free from GitHub or Homebrew under the MIT licence, a download anyone can run. If you'd rather pay, the website copy is $4.99 or more on Gumroad and the Mac App Store one is $9.99. Same app, sold to support development. |
| Free plan and trial | A | The complete app is free if you get it from the GitHub releases page or Homebrew, with nothing held back. Just don't be thrown by the website's download buttons, which lead to the paid copies. |
| Features | C | Clipboard history is the whole of it: type-to-search, pinned items, paste without formatting, and a copied password dropped when your password manager clears it. The vendor says it leaves out the extras other clipboard managers add, and clips don't sync anywhere. |
| Ease of use | B | No store rating on record, but there's nothing to set up: Shift-Command-C opens the history, you type to filter and press Enter. Pasting automatically is the one thing that wants the macOS Accessibility permission. |
| Platforms and integrations | D | Mac only, on macOS Sonoma 14 or higher. It has Shortcuts actions for automating things, and that's the only tie-in listed. Your history stays on the one Mac. |
An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.
Who Maccy is for
- Fits if you want a clipboard history you search and paste from the keyboard
- Works for people who want clips kept on the one Mac and not synced anywhere
Who it is not for
- Skip it if you're on Windows or Linux, or a Mac older than macOS Sonoma 14
- Not for you if you want clips on your other devices, since history stays on the one Mac
- Too light for people after the extras bigger clipboard managers add, which it leaves out on purpose
- Watch out: the website's download buttons lead to paid copies, $4.99 or more on Gumroad or $9.99 on the Mac App Store
Good to know
Good for
- Mac users who want clipboard history and nothing else
- Keyboard-driven work: search and paste without reaching for the mouse
- People who prefer open-source apps that keep data on the device
Worth knowing
- macOS only; it requires macOS Sonoma 14 or higher.
- The free download is on GitHub or Homebrew. The website's buttons lead to paid copies: $4.99 or more on Gumroad, $9.99 on the Mac App Store.
- History stays on the Mac, so the pages read describe no syncing of clips to other devices.
- It is built to do one job; the vendor says it leaves out the extra features other clipboard managers add.

Keep it, or make your own?
Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.
Keep it
Nothing Maccy does is plain enough to make in a weekend. The 4 things listed below take a company.
Maccy is open source, so there is a third way: take its code and run it yourself.
What you could not
- A clipboard history running in the background of your computer.
- A native app living in the menu bar.
- A real app for macOS. Something home-made would be a web page.
- Hooks into the device itself: Shortcuts.
What this rests on. Maccy’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
