Part 01 · Overview
Welcome
What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first
2.6
GPA, above 15 of the 24 other email marketing and newsletter tools we grade
MailerLite is an email marketing service for small businesses and creators. Besides newsletters and automated emails it builds websites, landing pages and sign-up forms, and can sell digital products, bookings and paid newsletter subscriptions through Stripe. Paid plans include the same features and are priced by subscriber count.
To get you started, here are 9 things to know about MailerLite, taken from its own pages and our grades.
The real work still happens in the web app, building emails and automations.
- 1
Best for a newsletter with a simple website on the side
MailerLite is the sensible pick for a small business or creator who wants newsletters, automations and a simple website in one place.
- 2
Paid plans start at $12 a month
As its pricing page puts it: $12 per month for up to 500 subscribers, billed monthly.
- 3
There is a free plan
Up to 250 subscribers, 2,500 emails a month, 2 seats, automations, 1 website, 1 landing page and 3 forms. No sending through the API.
- 4
It runs on 2 platforms
Web and iOS.
- 5
Three email editors
Drag-and-drop, custom HTML and a simple text editor on every plan. Paid plans add the AI writing assistant, multivariate testing and dynamic content.
- 6
Automation builder
A visual workflow builder with templates, e-commerce triggers, RSS campaigns and auto-resend. Comfort allows 50 active automations; Power has no cap.
- 7
Websites, landing pages and forms
Build sites with a blog, landing pages, embedded forms and pop-ups. Free allows one site and three forms; an iPad app collects sign-ups offline.
- 8
A 2.6 GPA, above 15 of 24
That is against the other email marketing and newsletter tools we grade, on value, the free plan, features, ease of use and platforms.
- 9
Keep it
To replace MailerLite you would be making newsletters sent to thousands of people that still reach the inbox. That is not a weekend's work, with an AI app builder or without one.

The report card
Best for a newsletter with a simple website on the side
MailerLite is the sensible pick for a small business or creator who wants newsletters, automations and a simple website in one place. Paid plans start at $12 a month and you're paying for list size, not for unlocking features. The free plan stops at 250 subscribers, though, and you'll pass that sooner than you think.
| Subject | Grade | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| Value for money | C | $12 a month for 500 subscribers, just under the middle of what email tools charge, and that already gets you 50 automations, 10 forms and 10 sites. It stays reasonable as you grow, at $89 a month for 10,000 subscribers, and yearly billing takes 10% off. |
| Free plan and trial | C | Free for up to 250 subscribers and 2,500 emails a month, with automations, one website and three forms. A fair start, but 250 people is a cap you'll hit, and then campaigns and automations lock until you pay. There's a 14-day trial of paid features too, no card needed. |
| Features | B | Three email editors, a visual automation builder, websites, landing pages and forms, plus paid newsletters, digital products and bookings through Stripe. That's the whole job. Receipts and other transactional emails live in a separate product, MailerSend. |
| Ease of use | B | 4.67 from about 1,100 App Store ratings for its companion app, just under the 4.7 an A needs. The real work still happens in the web app, building emails and automations. |
| Platforms and integrations | B | Web and an iPhone app, with Shopify, WooCommerce, Stripe, Claude and ChatGPT, an API and an MCP server. No desktop app, so it can't go higher than a B. |
An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.
Who MailerLite is for
- Great if you want a newsletter, a few automations and a basic website without juggling three tools
- Handy when you're selling a paid newsletter or an ebook and already use Stripe
- Good for small lists, since every paid plan has the same features and only the price grows
Who it is not for
- Tight if you're staying free and your list is heading past 250 people
- Not for you if you also need receipts and password-reset emails, which come from a separate product
- Pricey if your list grows in bursts, as subscribers count up through each billing cycle and move you up a tier automatically
Good to know
Good for
- Creators and small businesses sending a regular newsletter
- People who want a simple website and email list in one tool
- Writers charging for a newsletter through Stripe
Worth knowing
- The Free plan stops at 250 subscribers; above that, campaigns and automations are locked until you upgrade.
- Subscribers count cumulatively through each billing cycle, and passing your tier moves you up and charges the card automatically.
- Comfort caps monthly emails at 10 times the top of your subscriber tier; Power has no monthly cap, subject to fair use.
- Transactional email is not part of these plans; MailerLite points to its separate MailerSend product.

Keep it, or make your own?
Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.
Keep it
To replace MailerLite you would be making newsletters sent to thousands of people that still reach the inbox. That is not a weekend's work, with an AI app builder or without one.
It costs $144 a year.
What you could make
- Paid newsletters and forms: an app builder makes these well.
What you could not
- Newsletters sent to thousands of people that still reach the inbox.
- Email sent in volume that still reaches the inbox.
- A real app for iOS. Something home-made would be a web page.
- It plugs into other products, Shopify, WooCommerce and Stripe among them, and has an API.
- AI features, unless you pay a model provider for each request yourself.
- The depth: we grade its features B, which means it covers the whole job.
What this rests on. MailerLite’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
