Part 01 · Overview
Welcome
What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first
2.8
GPA, above 34 of the 51 other docs and wiki tools we grade
Microsoft Loop is a collaboration app built from three parts: workspaces that group everything for a project, pages that act as flexible canvases, and components such as lists and tables that stay in sync wherever they are shared. It is free with a personal Microsoft account and comes with Microsoft 365 work and school accounts rather than being sold on its own.
To get you started, here are 9 things to know about Microsoft Loop, taken from its own pages and our grades.
You can't share with anyone outside your organization, and Microsoft's own pages disagree on which business plan includes it.
- 1
Best for shared pages for teams living in Microsoft 365
It isn't sold on its own, and the free personal version has no Copilot and no components in Teams or Outlook.
- 2
Paid plans start at $5.40 a month for each person
As its pricing page puts it: $5.40 per user / month, paid yearly (Microsoft 365 Business Basic, no Teams).
- 3
There is a free plan
Free with a personal Microsoft account on the web, iOS and Android. Workspaces and pages count toward the account's Microsoft storage quota; Copilot and Loop components in Teams or Outlook are not available.
- 4
It runs on 3 platforms
Web, iOS and Android.
- 5
Workspaces
Shared spaces that group the pages, links and files for a project, so a team can see what everyone is working on and track progress toward shared goals.
- 6
Pages
Flexible canvases that bring together components, links, tasks and data. A page can be shared across Microsoft 365 apps as a link or as an embedded component.
- 7
Loop components
Lists, tables and notes that stay in sync wherever they are shared, including Teams, Outlook, OneNote and Whiteboard. They are not supported with personal Microsoft accounts.
- 8
A 2.8 GPA, above 34 of 51
That is against the other docs and wiki tools we grade, on value, the free plan, features, ease of use and platforms.
- 9

The plain part of Microsoft Loop you could make: documents and templates. What surrounds it you could not. The 4 things listed below take a company, not a weekend.

The report card
Best for shared pages for teams living in Microsoft 365
Loop is Microsoft's shared workspaces and pages, with components: a list or table you drop into Teams or Outlook that stays in sync where it's shared. It isn't sold on its own, and the free personal version has no Copilot and no components in Teams or Outlook. You can't share with anyone outside your organization, and Microsoft's own pages disagree on which business plan includes it.
| Subject | Grade | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| Value for money | B | You can't buy Loop by itself. At work it rides along with Microsoft 365 from $5.40 a user a month paid yearly, inside the cheapest quarter for this category. One wrinkle: Microsoft's plans page only names Loop from Business Standard, which is $20.30 and up. |
| Free plan and trial | B | Free with a personal Microsoft account on the web, iPhone and Android, with workspaces and pages. One person could live on that for their own projects. Pages count against your Microsoft storage quota, though, and you get no Copilot and no components in Teams or Outlook. |
| Features | C | Workspaces that gather a project's pages, links and files, templates for meeting notes and decisions, and lists and tables that stay in sync across Teams, Outlook, OneNote and Whiteboard. The gap Microsoft names itself is a real one: no sharing with guests or anyone outside your organisation. |
| Ease of use | B | 4.6 from about 5,000 App Store ratings. Sign in with a Microsoft account and start a page, and when you make a workspace it goes looking for relevant files and offers to add them. |
| Platforms and integrations | B | Web, iPhone and Android, with components turning up inside Teams, Outlook, OneNote and Whiteboard, which is the whole point. No desktop app and no API on record, and the cross-app part needs a work or school account. |
An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.
Who Microsoft Loop is for
- Fits if your team already works in Teams and Outlook on Microsoft 365
- Works for an agenda or task list that has to stay the same in several Microsoft apps
Who it is not for
- Skip it if you work with clients or freelancers, as it can't share with guests or anyone outside your organization
- Not for you if your company isn't on Microsoft 365, because Loop isn't sold by itself
- Watch out: Microsoft's plans page names Loop only from Business Standard at $20.30, but its support page says Business Basic's storage is enough
- Tight if you're on a personal account: no Copilot, no components in Teams or Outlook, and pages use your Microsoft storage quota
- Watch out: the one-month business trial needs a card and turns into a paid plan, and there's no desktop app
Good to know
Good for
- Teams that already work in Microsoft 365, Teams and Outlook
- Agendas, task lists and notes that have to stay in sync across apps
- Personal projects on a free Microsoft account
Worth knowing
- Loop is not sold on its own: work use comes with a Microsoft 365 subscription that includes OneDrive or SharePoint storage.
- Microsoft's plans page names Loop only under Business Standard and Premium, while its Loop support page says any work account with that storage can create workspaces.
- Microsoft's support page says Loop does not currently support external sharing with guests or people outside the organization.
- Copilot in Loop needs a Microsoft 365 Copilot plan on work accounts and is not available with personal accounts, even on Microsoft 365 Personal or Family.

- Copilot in Loop
- Helps a team co-create content and catch up on changes to a page. It requires a Microsoft 365 Copilot plan and a work or school account.

Keep it, or make your own?
Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.
Keep it
The plain part of Microsoft Loop you could make: documents and templates. What surrounds it you could not. The 4 things listed below take a company, not a weekend.
It is one of the better ones too: its GPA of 2.8 is higher than 34 of the 51 other docs and wiki tools we grade. It costs $64.80 a year.
What you could make
- Documents and templates: an app builder makes these well.
What you could not
- A real app for iOS and Android. Something home-made would be a web page.
- Several people working in it at the same moment.
- It plugs into other products, Microsoft Teams, Outlook and OneNote among them.
- AI features, unless you pay a model provider for each request yourself.
What this rests on. Microsoft Loop’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
