Part 01 · Overview

Welcome

What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first

2.2

GPA, above 6 of the 123 other to-do list apps we grade

myTinyTodo is a small open-source to-do list script written in PHP and jQuery that you install on your own web server. Tasks are kept in multiple lists with notes, tags, due dates and four priority levels, and a one-line smart syntax sets these as a task is typed. Data is stored in a MySQL, PostgreSQL or SQLite database, and the changelog runs from 2009 to a release in September 2026.

To get you started, here are 8 things to know about myTinyTodo, taken from its own pages and our grades.

There are no repeating tasks or subtasks on record, and one shared password stands in for accounts.

The report card

Best for a private to-do list on your own web hosting

myTinyTodo is a free, open-source to-do list you install on your own web server, and typing "+1 Task #Tag1 @monday" sets the priority, tag and due date in one go. You need PHP hosting and a database before your first task, and there are no phone or desktop apps, just the web page. There are no repeating tasks or subtasks on record, and one shared password stands in for accounts.

SubjectGradeComment
Value for moneyCThe script costs nothing under the GNU GPL, but free here means free if you own a server: PHP hosting and a MySQL, PostgreSQL or SQLite database are yours to pay for and keep running. That's not the same as the free apps in this category.
Free plan and trialANothing is held back and nothing is sold: the full script and its extensions, under the GPL, with only a donations page. It has been going since 2009 and still had a release in September 2026.
FeaturesCThe basics with real gaps. You get lists in tabs, tags, due dates, four priority levels, Markdown notes, a one-line syntax and exports to RSS, CSV and iCalendar. But no recurring tasks or subtasks on record, and protection is one shared password rather than an account each.
Ease of useDYou host it yourself, which means a web server with PHP and a database set up before you type your first task. Fine if you already run a site; a wall if you don't, and nothing in the listing softens it.
Platforms and integrationsCWeb only, on whatever browser you have, with no native phone or desktop app at all. What it connects to is thin too: a Telegram and e-mail notification extension, plus RSS, CSV and iCalendar exports.
Grade point averageFair, out of 4.02.2

An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.

Who myTinyTodo is for

  • Fits if you already have PHP web hosting and want a private list on it
  • Works for typing a priority, tags and a due date in one line

Who it is not for

  • Skip it if you've never set up a web server, because it has to be self-hosted with PHP and a database
  • Not for you if you want a phone or desktop app, as phones get the same web page
  • Too light for a team, since there's one password and no separate accounts
  • Too light for routines, with no recurring tasks or subtasks on record
  • Watch out: Internet Explorer and the Presto-based Opera aren't supported, and Telegram is the only integration

Good to know

Good for

  • People with PHP web hosting who want a private to-do list
  • Simple lists with tags, priorities and due dates
  • Publishing a read-only list or an RSS feed of tasks

Worth knowing

  • It must be self-hosted: the site offers a download and a demo, and setup needs a web server with PHP and a MySQL, PostgreSQL or SQLite database.
  • There are no native mobile or desktop apps; phones use the same responsive web page.
  • Protection is a single password set in settings rather than separate accounts for each person.
  • Internet Explorer and the Presto-based Opera are not supported.

Keep it, or make your own?

Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.

Keep it

myTinyTodo is free, so making your own would save you nothing.

That makes this kind of software worth paying for, not this one in particular: 97 of the 123 other to-do list apps grade higher.

What you could make

  • Tasks and Markdown: an app builder makes these well.

What this rests on. myTinyTodo’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
