Value for money
AFree to download under the GNU GPL, extensions included. The only cost is your own hosting, if you don't have some already. The developer takes donations.
AFree and open source under the MIT license, with no paid plans. You supply the server, which is the real cost. The maintainer accepts one-time sponsorship donations if you want to chip in.
Free plan and trial
AThe full script is free, with no paid version and nothing held back. It's been going since 2009, with a release as recent as September 2026.
AThe full board is free, because there's nothing else to sell. No paid tier, no limits, no trial clock. You do need somewhere to run it.
Features
BLists in tabs, tags, due dates, four priority levels, Markdown notes, and a one-line syntax that sets them as you type. Lists can be published read-only, followed by RSS or exported to CSV and iCalendar. Protection is one shared password, not separate accounts.
BLanes, cards, tags, colors that flag a due date that's today or past, three themes and custom CSS. Solid for a board, and narrow on purpose: the maintainer calls it a low-maintenance project. The README mentions no user accounts or sign-in, so who gets in is left to you.
Ease of use
DYou have to host it yourself. That means a web server with PHP and a MySQL, PostgreSQL or SQLite database before you add your first task. Fine if you already run a website, a wall if you don't.
DYou have to host it yourself. One docker run command starts it on port 8080, which is light as these things go, but it's still a server for you to run and guard. There's no hosted version to sign up for.
Platforms and integrations
BIt's a web page, so it opens on anything with a modern browser, phones included. Extensions add notifications by e-mail and Telegram, and lists come out as RSS, CSV or iCalendar. There are no native mobile or desktop apps.
BIt runs in a browser from your own server and installs as a PWA. The reach comes from the files: each card is a Markdown file you can open in Obsidian or any text editor. There are no native apps, and the PWA install doesn't work if BASE_PATH is anything but the root path.

Who each one suits

myTinyTodo

  • People with PHP web hosting who want a private to-do list
  • Simple lists with tags, priorities and due dates
  • Publishing a read-only list or an RSS feed of tasks

Tasks.md

  • Self-hosters who want a task board on their own server
  • People who keep tasks as plain Markdown files
  • Homelab users who deploy apps with Docker

Worth knowing

myTinyTodo

  • It must be self-hosted: the site offers a download and a demo, and setup needs a web server with PHP and a MySQL, PostgreSQL or SQLite database.
  • There are no native mobile or desktop apps; phones use the same responsive web page.
  • Protection is a single password set in settings rather than separate accounts for each person.
  • Internet Explorer and the Presto-based Opera are not supported.

Tasks.md

  • There is no hosted version: someone has to run the Docker image or the source code on a server.
  • The README mentions no user accounts or sign-in, so restricting access is left to the host.
  • The maintainer calls it a low-maintenance project and keeps the scope of features narrow on purpose.
  • Installing as a PWA does not work when BASE_PATH is set to anything other than the root path.

Key features

myTinyTodo

Multiple lists in tabs
Each list is a tab with its own URL. Tabs can be reordered or hidden, and a special tab shows the tasks from every list together.
Smart syntax
A task typed as "+1 Task #Tag1 #Tag2 @monday" is created with its priority, tags and due date already set. Due dates accept forms such as @1d or @25.12.
Tags, priorities and sorting
Tasks take tags, due dates and a priority from -1 to +2. A tag cloud filters the list, search finds tasks, and sorting includes manual drag-and-drop and reverse order.
Notes with Markdown
Each task can carry a note, and notes support Markdown syntax, including #NUMBER links to other tasks by id. Markdown can be turned off in settings.
Publishing, feeds and export
A list can be published for read-only viewing, followed as an RSS feed, or exported to CSV and iCalendar. A password in settings keeps others from changing tasks.
Extensions
Extensions listed in the changelog add notifications by e-mail and Telegram, backups to XML with restore, an updater and custom CSS.

Tasks.md

Board of lanes, cards and tags
Cards, lanes and tags are created in a responsive web interface, and the color settings cover tag colors and highlights for due dates that are today or past.
Cards are Markdown files
Every lane added in the app is a directory on disk and every task is a Markdown file inside it, so tasks can be edited outside the app.
Single Docker image
One docker run command or a short docker-compose file starts the app on port 8080, with one volume for tasks and one for configuration.
Sub-directories as projects
Opening the app under a sub-path, such as /backlog, treats that directory as a separate project with its own lanes and tasks.
Themes and custom CSS
Light and dark modes follow the operating system, three color themes ship by default (Adwaita, Nord and Catppuccin), and a custom.css file overrides the colors.
PWA, languages and reverse proxy
The app can be installed as a PWA, picks its language from the browser, and takes a BASE_PATH variable for running behind a sub-path reverse proxy.
