How we grade them
| 3.0GPATasks.mdVery good | 3.2GPAtududiVery good | |
|---|---|---|
| Value for money | AFree and open source under the MIT license, with no paid plans. You supply the server, which is the real cost. The maintainer accepts one-time sponsorship donations if you want to chip in. | Btududi Cloud is €5 a person a month, or €50 a year, before taxes. That's a touch above what paid to-do apps typically start at, and it's one plan with everything: AI day planning, MCP, CalDAV, daily backups and 5 GB. The €50 yearly price is labelled early bird, so don't count on it staying. |
| Free plan and trial | AThe full board is free, because there's nothing else to sell. No paid tier, no limits, no trial clock. You do need somewhere to run it. | BFree only if you host it: the whole application, with no seat limits, on a server you run, update and back up. tududi Cloud has no free plan, just a 14-day trial with no card. Don't subscribe and the account goes read-only for 30 days, then it's deleted. |
| Features | BLanes, cards, tags, colors that flag a due date that's today or past, three themes and custom CSS. Solid for a board, and narrow on purpose: the maintainer calls it a low-maintenance project. The README mentions no user accounts or sign-in, so who gets in is left to you. | AAreas and goals down to projects, tasks and subtasks, with notes and habits alongside. One Add box reads "next fri" or "every first monday". The planner places tasks in the free time between meetings, and there's an Eisenhower matrix, Kanban, saved views and an MCP server with 59 tools. |
| Ease of use | DYou have to host it yourself. One docker run command starts it on port 8080, which is light as these things go, but it's still a server for you to run and guard. There's no hosted version to sign up for. | BOn Cloud it's hosted for you: sign up and type into one box. The free route is another story, with Docker, a reverse proxy, TLS, updates and backups all yours. There's no rating on record to go by, so a B. |
| Platforms and integrations | BIt runs in a browser from your own server and installs as a PWA. The reach comes from the files: each card is a Markdown file you can open in Obsidian or any text editor. There are no native apps, and the PWA install doesn't work if BASE_PATH is anything but the root path. | BIt runs in a browser and installs as a PWA, with no native mobile or desktop apps. It connects well, though: two-way CalDAV with Apple Reminders, tasks.org and Thunderbird, a Telegram bot, a REST API and read-only Google, Apple and Outlook calendar feeds. |
| Best for | a kanban board made of Markdown files | an open-source task system you can self-host |
The GPA is the average of the five grades: an A is 4 points, an F is none. The full reasons are on each tool's page: Tasks.md and tududi. How we grade

Tasks.md
- Self-hosters who want a task board on their own server
- People who keep tasks as plain Markdown files
- Homelab users who deploy apps with Docker
tududi
- People who want a self-hosted task system under the MIT license
- Planning a day's tasks around calendar meetings
- Connecting an AI agent to tasks through a built-in MCP server

Worth knowing
Tasks.md
- There is no hosted version: someone has to run the Docker image or the source code on a server.
- The README mentions no user accounts or sign-in, so restricting access is left to the host.
- The maintainer calls it a low-maintenance project and keeps the scope of features narrow on purpose.
- Installing as a PWA does not work when BASE_PATH is set to anything other than the root path.
tududi
- tududi Cloud has no free plan. After the 14-day trial, an account without a subscription turns read-only for 30 days and is then deleted.
- There are no native mobile or desktop apps: tududi runs in a browser and can be installed as a PWA.
- Cloud prices are listed in euros and exclude taxes, and the €50 yearly price is labelled an early-bird rate.
- The free option is self-hosting, which means running Docker, a reverse proxy, TLS, updates and backups yourself.
Key features
Tasks.md
- Board of lanes, cards and tags
- Cards, lanes and tags are created in a responsive web interface, and the color settings cover tag colors and highlights for due dates that are today or past.
- Cards are Markdown files
- Every lane added in the app is a directory on disk and every task is a Markdown file inside it, so tasks can be edited outside the app.
- Single Docker image
- One docker run command or a short docker-compose file starts the app on port 8080, with one volume for tasks and one for configuration.
- Sub-directories as projects
- Opening the app under a sub-path, such as /backlog, treats that directory as a separate project with its own lanes and tasks.
- Themes and custom CSS
- Light and dark modes follow the operating system, three color themes ship by default (Adwaita, Nord and Catppuccin), and a custom.css file overrides the colors.
- PWA, languages and reverse proxy
- The app can be installed as a PWA, picks its language from the browser, and takes a BASE_PATH variable for running behind a sub-path reverse proxy.
tududi
- One Add box with plain-language dates
- A single box adds inbox items, tasks, notes or projects. Phrases such as "next fri" or "every first monday" set the date or repeat, and #tags, +Project and @person are read as you type.
- Plan my day around your calendar
- The planner ranks what could fit today and places tasks in the free time between meetings from read-only Google, Apple or Outlook calendar feeds. AI can draft the whole day.
- Areas, goals, projects and habits
- Goals and areas sit at the top and contain projects, which contain tasks and subtasks. Notes are kept alongside, and habits are tracked with streaks and a completion history.
- Eisenhower matrix, Kanban and saved views
- Tasks can be shown as an Eisenhower matrix or a Kanban board, and saved searches such as Today, Overdue or Someday reopen a filter in one click.
- MCP server and optional AI assistant
- A built-in MCP server exposes 59 tools to agents such as Claude Desktop or Cursor. A separate, opt-in AI assistant works with any OpenAI-compatible provider, including local ones like Ollama.
- CalDAV, Telegram and API
- Tasks sync both ways over CalDAV with Apple Reminders, tasks.org and Thunderbird. A Telegram bot captures tasks and sends daily digests, and a REST API uses personal access tokens.
