Part 01 · Overview
Welcome
What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first
2.2
GPA, above 4 of the 57 other AI assistants we grade
NanoGPT is a web app and API from NanoGPT LLC that gives access to several hundred text, image, video and audio models, including ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini, without a separate subscription to each. Usage is paid from a prepaid balance at each model's list price, and a $12 a month Pro plan adds a weekly token allowance on selected models. By default, prompts and conversations are not stored on its servers.
To get you started, here are 9 things to know about NanoGPT, taken from its own pages and our grades.
- 1
Best for paying per message instead of per month
NanoGPT is pay as you go: put a dollar on your balance and you can use ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and several hundred other models, each billed per use at its list price, or take the $12 Pro plan.
- 2
Paid plans start at $12 a month
As its pricing page puts it: $12 per month (Pro), or pay as you go at model list prices.
- 3
There is a free plan
Pay As You Go costs $0 a month and includes one free model, on the web only. Every other model is billed per use from a prepaid balance.
- 4
It runs on Web
Web.
- 5
Hundreds of models in one place
The model directory lists 641 text, 224 image, 183 video, 98 audio and 13 3D models, including ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini, all used from one chat interface and one balance.
- 6
Per-use billing at list prices
Text models are billed at the provider's list price per million tokens with no markup, and deposits carry no percentage fee. Each API response reports the exact cost charged.
- 7
OpenAI-compatible API
The API follows OpenAI's chat completions and Responses formats and Anthropic's Messages format, and also covers images, video, audio, embeddings, web search and batch jobs.
- 8
A 2.2 GPA, above 4 of 57
That is against the other AI assistants we grade, on value, the free plan, features, ease of use and platforms.
- 9
Keep it
To replace NanoGPT you would be making an AI model, which you can rent by the request but not make. That is not a weekend's work, with an AI app builder or without one.

The report card
Best for paying per message instead of per month
NanoGPT is pay as you go: put a dollar on your balance and you can use ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and several hundred other models, each billed per use at its list price, or take the $12 Pro plan. Only one model is free, Pro still bills models like Claude Opus 5.5 per use, and it's a browser tab and an API, with no phone or desktop app.
| Subject | Grade | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| Value for money | C | Pro is $12 a month, which is exactly this category's middle figure, and even on it models like Claude Opus 5.5 are still billed per use. You needn't subscribe at all: put $1 on a balance and pay each model's list price with no markup. Pinning a provider by hand adds 5%, mind, as does using your own key. |
| Free plan and trial | C | One free model, on the web, and that's the lot. Everything else comes out of a prepaid balance, so you reach the end of the free part on day one. |
| Features | B | The directory lists 641 text models, 224 image, 183 video, 98 audio and 13 3D, with an API in OpenAI's and Anthropic's formats covering images, video, audio, embeddings and web search. It's a browser tab and an API, though, with nothing listed for chatting with your own documents. |
| Ease of use | C | No rating on record. You can type in an anonymous session with no account, but paying by the token and keeping a balance topped up is a way of thinking you have to pick up first. |
| Platforms and integrations | C | A website and an API, and that's it. The pricing page mentions no desktop or phone app, and the listing names no integrations. |
An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.
Who NanoGPT is for
- Fits if you ask an AI something now and then and would rather pay per message
- Works for developers who want one API key for lots of model providers
Who it is not for
- Skip it if you want an app on your phone or desktop, as it's a website and an API
- Not for you if you want one flat bill, since Pro still charges per use for models like Claude Opus 5.5
- Tight if you're staying free, because that's a single model on the web
- Watch out: pinning a provider by hand adds 5%, and your own key is billed at 5% of the model's cost
- Too light for chatting with your own documents, which isn't listed, and it names no integrations
Good to know
Good for
- Occasional users who would rather pay per message than subscribe
- Developers who want one API key for many model providers
- People who want to pay with cryptocurrency or without an account
Worth knowing
- The free allowance is a single model on the web; everything else needs a prepaid balance or the Pro plan.
- Pro's weekly allowance covers only the models included in the subscription; others, such as Claude Opus 5.5, are still billed per use.
- Pinning a specific provider by hand adds 5%, and bring-your-own-key requests are billed at 5% of the normal model cost.
- Access is through the website and the API; the pricing page mentions no desktop or mobile apps.

Keep it, or make your own?
Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.
Keep it
To replace NanoGPT you would be making an AI model, which you can rent by the request but not make. That is not a weekend's work, with an AI app builder or without one.
That makes this kind of software worth paying for, not this one in particular: 46 of the 57 other AI assistants grade higher. It costs $144 a year.
What you could not
- An AI model, which you can rent by the request but not make.
- A search engine with an AI model behind it.
- An API that other software can build on.
- The depth: we grade its features B, which means it covers the whole job.
What this rests on. NanoGPT’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
