Part 01 · Overview

Welcome

What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first

2.2

GPA, above 3 of the 79 other project management tools we grade

OmniPlan is project scheduling software from The Omni Group for Mac, iPad, iPhone and Apple Vision Pro. It builds a schedule from task durations, dependencies and resource assignments, shows it as a Gantt chart or a network diagram, and tracks progress against saved baselines. One license or subscription covers every supported device, and the Pro edition adds collaboration, Microsoft Project file support and Monte Carlo simulation.

To get you started, here are 9 things to know about OmniPlan, taken from its own pages and our grades.

  1. 1

Best for Apple users who'd rather buy once

OmniPlan is scheduling software for Apple devices: give it durations, dependencies and resources, and it builds the schedule, levels the workload and shows the critical path.

  2. 2

Paid plans start at $16.67 a month when paid by the year

As its pricing page puts it: $199.99 one-time for a v4 Standard license, or $199.99 per year by subscription.

  3. 3

    You can try it first

14-day free trial with full features and no automatic charge when started from an Omni Account; then a free viewer.

  4. 4

    It runs on 2 platforms

    macOS and iOS.

  5. 5

    Gantt charts and network diagrams

View and edit a project as an interactive Gantt chart or as a network diagram of task relationships, alongside an outline with customizable columns.

  6. 6

    Automatic scheduling and leveling

Builds a schedule from durations, dependencies, date constraints and assigned resources, and levels resources so none is booked beyond 100% of its availability.

  7. 7

    Critical path and baselines

Highlights the tasks that determine the completion date and compares the current schedule with multiple saved baselines.

  8. 8

    A 2.2 GPA, above 3 of 79

That is against the other project management tools we grade, on value, the free plan, features, ease of use and platforms.

  9. 9

    Keep it

The plain part of OmniPlan you could make: Gantt & timelines and reports. What surrounds it you could not. The 4 things listed below take a company, not a weekend.

The report card

Best for Apple users who'd rather buy once

OmniPlan is scheduling software for Apple devices: give it durations, dependencies and resources, and it builds the schedule, levels the workload and shows the critical path. A Standard license is $199.99 once for Mac, iPad and iPhone. But it's Apple only, collaboration and Microsoft Project files need Pro at $399.99, and a license covers 4.x updates only.

ToolGPA report cardOmniPlanGraded Oct 10, 2026
SubjectGradeComment
Value for moneyCA v4 Standard licence is $199.99 once, which is the middle of the one-time prices in this category and about two years of its middle subscription, covering Mac, iPhone, iPad and Vision Pro. Collaboration and Microsoft Project files are Pro, though: $399.99 once or $199.99 a year.
Free plan and trialCNo free plan. You get 14 days with every feature and no automatic charge if you start it from an Omni Account, and after that the app becomes a free viewer, so old plans stay readable. Editing costs.
FeaturesBIt builds the schedule from durations, dependencies, date constraints and resources, levels people so nobody is booked past 100%, and shows it as a Gantt chart or network diagram with critical path and several baselines. Pro adds Monte Carlo forecasts, change tracking and Microsoft Project files.
Ease of useCNo store rating on record. It installs like any Mac app and one licence unlocks every Apple device you own, but resource leveling, constraints and baselines take learning, and the multi-project dashboard and reports are Mac only.
Platforms and integrationsCMac, iPad, iPhone and Apple Vision Pro, and nothing else: no Windows, no Android, no browser. Pro opens and exports Microsoft Project files and syncs shared projects through Omni's servers or WebDAV, which is the extent of the wiring.
Grade point averageFair, out of 4.02.2

An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.

Who OmniPlan is for

  • Fits if you manage projects on Apple devices and prefer to buy a license once
  • Works for schedules that need resource leveling, critical path and baseline tracking

Who it is not for

  • Skip it if anyone on the team uses Windows or Android, as it's Apple devices only
  • Pricey if you need collaboration, Microsoft Project files or Monte Carlo forecasts, since that's Pro at $399.99 once or $199.99 a year
  • Not for you if you want upgrades for life, because a perpetual license covers 4.x updates only
  • Watch out: the multi-project dashboard, HTML reports and earned value analysis are Mac only
  • Watch out: there's no free plan, and after the 14-day trial the app only views plans

Good to know

Good for

  • Project managers on Apple devices who prefer to buy a license once
  • Schedules that need resource leveling, critical path and baseline tracking
  • Opening and returning Microsoft Project files from a Mac or iPad, with Pro

Worth knowing

  • Available only for Mac, iPad, iPhone and Apple Vision Pro; no Windows, Android or browser version is listed.
  • Collaboration, Microsoft Project support, Monte Carlo simulation and earned value analysis are Pro features, not part of the $199.99 Standard license.
  • The features page marks the multi-project dashboard, HTML reports and earned value analysis as Mac only.
  • A perpetual license covers 4.x updates only; later major versions are a paid upgrade, offered at a discount.

Keep it, or make your own?

Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.

Keep it

The plain part of OmniPlan you could make: Gantt & timelines and reports. What surrounds it you could not. The 4 things listed below take a company, not a weekend.

That makes this kind of software worth paying for, not this one in particular: 60 of the 79 other project management tools grade higher. It costs $199.99 a year.

What you could make

  • Gantt & timelines and reports: an app builder makes these well.

What you could not

  • Apps for macOS and iOS that stay in step with each other.
  • It plugs into other products, Microsoft Project, iCloud Drive and Box among them.
  • Sharing with other people, which means accounts and invitations.
  • The depth: we grade its features B, which means it covers the whole job.

What this rests on. OmniPlan’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
