Part 01 · Overview
Welcome
What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first
2.6
GPA, above 4 of the 17 other file storage and sync services we grade
pCloud is a cloud storage service from a Swiss company, with apps that mount storage as a virtual drive, back up folders and share files. Individual plans come in 500 GB, 2 TB and 10 TB sizes and can be paid monthly, yearly or once as a lifetime purchase. Users choose whether their files are kept in a European or a US data center, and client-side encryption is sold as an add-on.
To get you started, here are 9 things to know about pCloud, taken from its own pages and our grades.
On a computer it turns up as an extra drive, so you drag files in like any folder, and on a phone one switch backs up your photos.
- 1
Best for paying once for cloud storage, not every month
If you want private files as standard, look elsewhere.
- 2
Paid plans start at $4.17 a month when paid by the year
As its pricing page puts it: $4.99 per month, or $49.99 billed yearly.
- 3
There is a free plan
Free account with up to 10 GB of storage.
- 4
It runs on 6 platforms
Web, Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS and Android, with a browser extension too.
- 5
pCloud Drive
A desktop app for Windows, macOS and Linux that makes cloud files available as if they were stored locally, without using hard drive space.
- 6
Backup and file history
The desktop app backs up folders from a computer, and backups can also be pulled from Dropbox, Google Drive, Google Photos, OneDrive and Facebook.
- 7
Sharing and shared folders
Files and folders are shared by link or through shared folders with access levels. Business adds branded links carrying a logo, cover and message.
- 8
A 2.6 GPA, above 4 of 17
That is against the other file storage and sync services we grade, on value, the free plan, features, ease of use and platforms.
- 9
Keep it
To replace pCloud you would be making files kept in step across devices without losing one. That is not a weekend's work, with an AI app builder or without one.

The report card
Best for paying once for cloud storage, not every month
pCloud is cloud storage you rent from $4.99 a month or buy once as a lifetime plan, with apps for every system, Linux included. Encryption only you can unlock is a $49.99-a-year add-on covering one folder, the free plan starts at 2 GB rather than 10, idle free accounts are deleted after 12 months, and lifetime prices are a bet that pCloud stays in business. If you want private files as standard, look elsewhere.
| Subject | Grade | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| Value for money | C | 500 GB is $4.99 a month, which is exactly this category's middle price, and 2 TB is $9.99, where its dearest tenth starts. The lifetime plans are a long bet: $499 for 2 TB is five years of the subscription up front. And the Crypto folder is another $49.99 a year. |
| Free plan and trial | C | Up to 10 GB with no card, but read that "up to": you start on 2 GB and earn the rest with a tutorial and invites. pCloud's terms also say a free account left idle for 12 months is deleted, files and all. |
| Features | C | The basics: a drive that uses no laptop space, phone photo backup, imports from other clouds, 30 days of old versions, a media player and pCloud Docs. Encryption only you can unlock is a separate $49.99 add-on, and it covers one folder. |
| Ease of use | B | 4.67 from about 8,200 App Store ratings, a shade under the 4.7 the top of this category manages. On a computer it turns up as an extra drive, so you drag files in like any folder, and on a phone one switch backs up your photos. |
| Platforms and integrations | A | Web, Windows, Mac, Linux, iPhone and Android, plus a browser add-on. It pulls files in from Dropbox, Google Drive, Google Photos, OneDrive and Facebook, and there's a documented API for developers. |
An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.
Who pCloud is for
- Fits if you'd rather pay once than every month, and plan to stay for years
- Works for Linux users, who get the same desktop drive as Windows and Mac
Who it is not for
- Not for you if you want files only you can unlock as standard, since that's a $49.99-a-year add-on for one folder
- Tight if you're staying free, because you start with 2 GB and earn your way to 10
- Skip it if you'd park photos on a free account and forget it, as idle ones are deleted after 12 months
- Skip it if you share folders across the Atlantic, as both accounts must be in the same region, and moving costs $19.99
- Watch out: lifetime prices are shown as promotions, refunds end after 14 days, and Family plans are lifetime only
Good to know
Good for
- People who prefer a one-time lifetime payment to a subscription
- Users who want to choose between EU and US data storage
- Linux users: pCloud Drive runs on Windows, macOS and Linux
Worth knowing
- Client-side, zero-knowledge encryption is a paid add-on and is not part of the standard storage plans.
- The free account is limited to up to 10 GB.
- Family plans, for up to 5 users, are offered only as lifetime purchases, and Business pricing is shown from 3 users.
- Lifetime prices are shown as promotions against a higher list price, so the amount charged can change.

Keep it, or make your own?
Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.
Keep it
To replace pCloud you would be making files kept in step across devices without losing one. That is not a weekend's work, with an AI app builder or without one.
That makes this kind of software worth paying for, not this one in particular: 10 of the 17 other file storage and sync services grade higher. It costs $49.99 a year.
What you could not
- Files kept in step across devices without losing one.
- Storing and serving files for other people.
- Apps for macOS, Windows, Linux, iOS and Android that stay in step with each other.
- Several people working in it at the same moment.
- It plugs into other products, Dropbox, Google Drive and Google Photos among them.
