Our verdict

Third of our top three digital business cards

For: Event and trade show teams scanning badges

Popl's free card comes with a lead capture form, an email signature and insights, and its iPhone and iPad app averages 4.8 from about 103,000 ratings. Its team plans read any event badge by the printed name, even when the badge's code is encrypted, enrich the contact and sync it to Salesforce, HubSpot, Marketo, Dynamics, Zoho or monday.com, with no per-seat or per-scan charge. It is third because team plans are priced only by quote after a demo, Pro ($76.99 a year) and Pro+ prices appear only in the App Store, free leads can't be exported, and the site now puts event teams ahead of one person's card.

Best for event badge scanning that feeds a CRM

Popl is a free digital card with a lead form, plus team plans that scan event badges and sync them to a CRM. Individual prices only show up in the App Store, team plans are quoted after a demo, and the site now puts its weight behind event teams rather than one person's card.

Who Popl is for

  • Fits if you work trade shows and want badge scans sent straight to a CRM
  • Works for one person who wants a free card with a form for people to leave their details

Who Popl is not for

  • Not for you if you want to see a team price before talking to sales, since team plans are quoted after a demo
  • Tight if you're staying free: exporting leads and custom QR codes need Pro, and custom form options need Pro+ or Teams
  • Watch out: Pro and Pro+ prices appear only in the App Store, not on Popl's own pricing page, and the trial length isn't stated
  • Skip it if you want a card app for one person, as Popl's site is now built around event lead capture for B2B teams

Why Popl gets a 3.0

Five grades, each with its reason. The GPA is their average: an A is 4 points, an F is none.

  • CValue for moneyPro is $76.99 a year on the US App Store, about $6.42 a month, between this category's middle ($5) and its dearer quarter ($7.50). Pro+ is $144.99 a year. Team plans are quoted, with no published price.
  • BFree plan and trialThe free card comes with a lead capture form, an email signature, virtual backgrounds and insights, with no time limit. One person can share a card on that; exporting the leads it collects needs Pro.
  • BFeaturesSharing by QR, NFC accessory, wallet and watch, a badge scanner that reads printed names, contact enrichment, AI follow-up emails and native CRM sync with field mapping. That's the whole job, though most of it sits on the team plans.
  • AEase of usePopl rates 4.8 on the US App Store from 103,265 ratings, the top of our ease ladder.
  • BPlatforms and integrationsWeb, iPhone and Android, with native sync to Salesforce, HubSpot, Marketo, Microsoft Dynamics, Zoho and monday.com, plus Slack. No desktop app.

Keep Popl, or make your own?

Keep it

The plain part of Popl you could make: digital business card and email signature. What surrounds it you could not. The 6 things listed below take a company, not a weekend.

It is one of the better ones too: its GPA of 3.0 is higher than 7 of the 10 other digital business cards we grade. It costs $76.99 a year.

What you could make

  • Digital business card and email signature: an app builder makes these well.

What you could not

  • A real app for iOS and Android. Something home-made would be a web page.
  • It plugs into other products, Salesforce, HubSpot and Marketo among them.
  • AI features, unless you pay a model provider for each request yourself.
  • Hooks into the device itself: an Apple Watch app and widgets.
  • Sharing with other people, which means accounts and invitations.
  • The depth: we grade its features B, which means it covers the whole job.

What this rests on. Popl’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.

What is Popl?

Popl is a digital business card app and an event lead capture platform. Individuals get a free card with paid Pro and Pro+ upgrades in the app, while Popl's team plans center on scanning conference badges, enriching the contacts and syncing them to a CRM. Team plans are quoted, and Popl says they cover unlimited users, events and leads.

Worth knowing

  • Team plans are priced only by quote after a demo; Popl says they carry no per-seat, per-scan or credit charges.
  • Pro and Pro+ prices are read from the US App Store listing; Popl's own pricing page does not publish them.
  • On the free plan, leads collected through the form cannot be exported; that needs Pro, Pro+ or Teams.
  • Popl's site is now built around event lead capture for B2B teams, and the individual card app gets little space there.
