Part 01 · Overview
Welcome
What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first
2.4
GPA, above 6 of the 18 other payroll services we grade
Rippling is a workforce platform whose modules, from HR records and payroll to benefits, time tracking, expenses and IT, share one employee database. Its payroll files federal, state and local taxes in the US, and Global Payroll, an employer-of-record service and a PEO cover other set-ups. Each company picks its modules and gets a quote.
To get you started, here are 7 things to know about Rippling, taken from its own pages and our grades.
New hires and salary changes flow into payroll without retyping, though choosing and pricing the modules takes a sales call.
- 1
Best for growing companies that want HR, IT and payroll as one
But you build it from modules and get a quote, so there's no way to see the price up front.
- 2
It runs on 3 platforms
Web, iOS and Android.
- 3
Payroll fed by HR data
New hires, salary changes and benefit deductions flow from the HR record into payroll, and taxes are filed with federal, state and local agencies.
- 4
Pay run comparison
Compare a pay run with earlier ones to catch changes in gross pay, taxes and deductions before approving it. Extra pay runs cost nothing more.
- 5
Global payroll, EOR and contractors
Pay employees abroad in their local currency, employ through Rippling's EOR where you have no entity, and pay contractors worldwide from invoices.
- 6
A 2.4 GPA, above 6 of 18
That is against the other payroll services we grade, on value, the free plan, features, ease of use and platforms.
- 7
Keep it
To replace Rippling you would be making payroll taxes worked out and filed with the government for you. That is not a weekend's work, with an AI app builder or without one.

The report card
Best for growing companies that want HR, IT and payroll as one
Rippling puts payroll on the same employee record as HR, benefits, expenses and IT, so a new hire or a pay rise flows through everything at once. It also pays people abroad. But you build it from modules and get a quote, so there's no way to see the price up front.
| Subject | Grade | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| Value for money | C | No payroll price is published. Rippling says plans start at $8 an employee a month plus a base fee it doesn't state, so five people are at least $40 before that fee, and each module is priced on its own. Quote only. |
| Free plan and trial | F | No free plan or trial. Eligible US venture-backed startups can get 6 months free, but that's a program you qualify for, not a trial anyone can start. |
| Features | B | Payroll fed straight from HR records, pay-run comparisons, US taxes filed, global payroll, an employer-of-record service and contractor payments abroad, plus approval rules and workflows. The whole job, at home and abroad. |
| Ease of use | A | 4.71 from about 16,600 App Store ratings. New hires and salary changes flow into payroll without retyping, though choosing and pricing the modules takes a sales call. |
| Platforms and integrations | B | Web, iPhone and Android, with Xero, QuickBooks and NetSuite among more than 650 integrations. No desktop app, which keeps it off an A. |
An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.
Who Rippling is for
- Great if you're tired of typing the same new hire into five different systems
- Handy when you have staff or contractors in more than one country
- Good for US venture-backed startups, which may get 6 months free
Who it is not for
- Skip it if you want a published price, as payroll is quoted with a base fee it doesn't state
- Not for you if all you need is paychecks and tax filing, which simpler tools sell at a price on the page
- Tight if you're watching the bill, since payroll, benefits, time and expenses are each priced separately
Good to know
Good for
- Growing companies that want HR, payroll and IT in one system
- Teams with staff or contractors in more than one country
- US venture-backed startups eligible for six free months
Worth knowing
- No payroll price is published: Rippling says plans start at $8 per employee a month plus a base fee it does not state, and quotes the rest.
- Each product, such as payroll, benefits, time tracking or expenses, is priced separately, so the total depends on the modules chosen.
- It runs US payroll and pays people abroad through Global Payroll and its EOR; the pages read give no list or count of countries.

Keep it, or make your own?
Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.
Keep it
To replace Rippling you would be making payroll taxes worked out and filed with the government for you. That is not a weekend's work, with an AI app builder or without one.
What you could make
- Time tracking and expense tracking: an app builder makes these well.
What you could not
- Payroll taxes worked out and filed with the government for you.
- Connections to other products, each kept working as those products change.
- A real app for iOS and Android. Something home-made would be a web page.
- AI features, unless you pay a model provider for each request yourself.
- What a company asks for before it lets staff use something: roles and permissions.
- The depth: we grade its features B, which means it covers the whole job.
What this rests on. Rippling’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
