Part 01 · Overview
Welcome
What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first
2.8
GPA, above 64 of the 83 other technical SEO tools we grade
Schema.dev is a set of free structured data tools from seoClarity. Its main tool, the Schema Builder extension for Chrome, generates JSON-LD markup for a page through a guided form whose fields can be filled by clicking on page elements, and checks the result for errors and warnings. A testing tool and API are in beta, and an automatic deployer is still described as coming soon.
To get you started, here are 7 things to know about Schema.dev, taken from its own pages and our grades.
You install the extension, open a page and fill the form by clicking elements, with required and recommended fields marked.
- 1
Best for building JSON-LD for one page, free
For markup across many pages, look elsewhere.
- 2
It is free
Schema.dev has no paid plan at all. Everything is free: the Schema Builder extension with its built-in tester, and the Schema Tester interface and API, which are in beta.
- 3
Point-and-click builder
A step-by-step form for each schema type, filled by clicking elements on the page or typing, with text transformations and custom values.
- 4
Dozens of schema types
Covers the types Google supports for rich results and more; the March 2025 update added vehicle listing markup.
- 5
Required and recommended fields
Guides you through the required, recommended and optional properties for each type, so less schema knowledge is needed.
- 6
A 2.8 GPA, above 64 of 83
That is against the other technical SEO tools we grade, on value, the free plan, features, ease of use and platforms.
- 7
Keep it
Schema.dev is free, so making your own would save you nothing.

The report card
Best for building JSON-LD for one page, free
Schema.dev's Chrome extension builds JSON-LD markup for a page through a guided form you fill by clicking on the page, and tests it, for free. It does one page at a time, you paste the markup in yourself, the tester is a beta, the deployer is still marked coming soon, and the last update was March 2025. For markup across many pages, look elsewhere.
| Subject | Grade | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| Value for money | A | Free, from seoClarity, with no paid plan: the Schema Builder extension, its built-in tester and the Schema Tester beta. Anyone can install it. |
| Free plan and trial | A | Everything is free, with no plan to upgrade to. The Schema Tester and its API need a beta sign-up. |
| Features | D | One narrow job: a form per schema type that outputs JSON-LD for a single page, with error and warning checks. No deployment and no templates for many pages, and the Deployer that would add them is still coming soon. |
| Ease of use | B | No rating on record. You install the extension, open a page and fill the form by clicking elements, with required and recommended fields marked. Nothing to connect. |
| Platforms and integrations | C | A Chrome extension only, with no integrations. There's no plugin that adds the markup to your site for you. |
An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.
Who Schema.dev is for
- Fits if you mark up a handful of pages and can paste JSON-LD into your CMS
- Works for checking what structured data a page already has
Who it is not for
- Skip it if you don't use Chrome, as it's a Chrome extension only
- Too light for whole sites, as markup is built page by page and the Deployer isn't out
- Watch out: the extension's latest version, 0.80.1, is from March 2025, and the site's newest blog posts are from 2020
- Tight if you want the Schema Tester or its API, which sit in a beta behind a sign-up
- Not for you if you want the markup added for you, as you copy and paste it yourself
Good to know
Good for
- Marketers adding schema markup to a few pages without writing JSON-LD by hand
- Checking the structured data already on a page while browsing
- Small sites that do not need a paid schema platform
Worth knowing
- It works only as a Chrome extension; there is no plugin that adds the markup to your site for you.
- The Schema Tester and its API are a beta behind a sign-up, and the Schema Deployer is still marked as coming soon.
- The extension's latest version, 0.80.1, dates from March 2025, and the site's newest blog posts are from 2020.
- Markup is built page by page; templates that cover many pages at once are planned for the unreleased Deployer.
