Part 01 · Overview
Welcome
What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first
3.0
GPA, above 10 of the 11 other inventory management tools we grade
Sortly is a simple inventory app for tracking equipment, tools, parts and supplies rather than running an online store. Items get photos, folders, custom fields and QR or barcode labels, and teams scan them in and out with a phone, check them out to people or jobs, and get low-stock and maintenance-date alerts. It runs on iOS, Android and the web, with a free plan for up to 100 items.
To get you started, here are 9 things to know about Sortly, taken from its own pages and our grades.
You photograph items, label them and scan them in and out with a phone, with low-stock and maintenance alerts.
- 1
Best for tracking tools, equipment and supplies
Sortly is for knowing where your tools, equipment and supplies are, not for running an online store.
- 2
Paid plans start at $49 a month
As its pricing page puts it: $49 per month, billed monthly.
- 3
There is a free plan
100 unique items, 1 user, 2 active jobs and 1 custom field, with in-app barcode and QR scanning, low-stock alerts and offline mobile access.
- 4
It runs on 3 platforms
Web, iOS and Android.
- 5
Visual item records
Each item has photos, folders, tags, custom fields and units of measure, and quantities of one item do not count against the item limit.
- 6
Scan with a phone
Scan barcodes and QR codes in the iOS and Android apps or with a third-party scanner, and keep working offline with automatic sync.
- 7
Labels you print yourself
Create QR code labels from Advanced and barcode labels from Ultra for items that arrive without a barcode.
- 8
A 3.0 GPA, above 10 of 11
That is against the other inventory management tools we grade, on value, the free plan, features, ease of use and platforms.
- 9
Keep it
The plain part of Sortly you could make: inventory and qR codes. What surrounds it you could not. The 3 things listed below take a company, not a weekend.

The report card
Best for tracking tools, equipment and supplies
Sortly is for knowing where your tools, equipment and supplies are, not for running an online store. You photograph items, label them and scan them in and out with a phone, with low-stock and maintenance alerts. It's simple and well liked, but it has no store or marketplace connections, and the half-price yearly deal is for the first year only.
| Subject | Grade | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| Value for money | B | It doesn't connect to an online store, so we've set it against the stock-on-hand tools it's listed beside. Advanced is $24 a month for a first year billed yearly ($288), then yearly plans are 20% off the $49 monthly price. Inside the cheaper quarter either way. |
| Free plan and trial | B | Free for 100 unique items, 1 user, 2 active jobs and 1 custom field, with scanning, low-stock alerts and offline use. Quantities of one item don't count against the 100, so one person tracking tools or supplies can stay on it. |
| Features | C | Photos, folders, custom fields, QR and barcode scanning, check-out to people and jobs, and low-stock and date alerts. It does the equipment and supplies job fully, but it's a smaller job: no store or marketplace links, and purchase orders wait for Ultra. |
| Ease of use | A | 4.73 from 9,537 App Store ratings, the top band. It's a phone app where you snap a photo, print a label and scan, with very little to set up. |
| Platforms and integrations | B | iPhone, Android and web, with QuickBooks Online, Amazon Business, Slack, Microsoft Teams and AppFolio. No desktop app, and the API, webhooks and single sign-on are Enterprise only. |
An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.
Who Sortly is for
- Great if you're a contractor or facilities team keeping track of tools and kit
- Handy when you check equipment out to people or jobs and want it back
- Good for offices, schools and clinics counting supplies on a phone
Who it is not for
- Skip it if you sell online, as there are no store or marketplace connections
- Pricey if you budget on the first-year deal, since the 50% off yearly ends after year one
- Tight if more than two of you need it, as Advanced allows only 2 users
Good to know
Good for
- Contractors and facilities teams tracking tools and equipment
- Offices, schools and clinics keeping count of supplies
- Small teams that want inventory on their phones with little setup
Worth knowing
- The yearly discount shown on the pricing page is 50% for the first year only; yearly plans then renew with a 20% discount off the monthly rate.
- Each plan caps unique items and users: 500 and 2 on Advanced, 2,000 and 5 on Ultra, 5,000 and 8 on Premium.
- The API, webhooks and single sign-on are on Enterprise only, and QuickBooks Online starts on Premium.
- Its integrations list has no online store or marketplace connections; it is built for tracking stock on hand rather than selling it.

Keep it, or make your own?
Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.
Keep it
The plain part of Sortly you could make: inventory and qR codes. What surrounds it you could not. The 3 things listed below take a company, not a weekend.
It is one of the better ones too: its GPA of 3.0 is higher than 10 of the 11 other inventory management tools we grade. It costs $588 a year.
What you could make
- Inventory and qR codes: an app builder makes these well.
What you could not
- Scanning barcodes with a phone camera or a scanner.
- A real app for iOS and Android. Something home-made would be a web page.
- It plugs into other products, QuickBooks Online, Amazon Business and Slack among them.
What this rests on. Sortly’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
