Sortly
Phone-first inventory app for tracking equipment, tools and supplies

Our verdict
Second of our top three inventory management tools
For: Teams tracking tools, equipment and supplies
Sortly keeps count of tools, equipment, parts and supplies on a phone: each item gets photos, folders and custom fields, you scan barcodes or QR codes, check items out to people or jobs, and get low-stock and maintenance alerts, offline too. The free plan covers 100 unique items for 1 user, and Advanced is $49 a month for 500 items and 2 users, or $288 for a first year billed yearly. Its iPhone and iPad app averages 4.7 from about 9,500 ratings. It is second because it is not built for selling: there are no online store or marketplace connections, purchase orders start on Ultra at $149 a month, and yearly plans renew at 20% off the monthly price after the first year.

Best for tracking tools, equipment and supplies
Sortly is for knowing where your tools, equipment and supplies are, not for running an online store. You photograph items, label them and scan them in and out with a phone, with low-stock and maintenance alerts. It's simple and well liked, but it has no store or marketplace connections, and the half-price yearly deal is for the first year only.
Who Sortly is for
- Great if you're a contractor or facilities team keeping track of tools and kit
- Handy when you check equipment out to people or jobs and want it back
- Good for offices, schools and clinics counting supplies on a phone
Who Sortly is not for
- Skip it if you sell online, as there are no store or marketplace connections
- Pricey if you budget on the first-year deal, since the 50% off yearly ends after year one
- Tight if more than two of you need it, as Advanced allows only 2 users
Why Sortly gets a 3.0
Five grades, each with its reason. The GPA is their average: an A is 4 points, an F is none.
- BValue for moneyIt doesn't connect to an online store, so we've set it against the stock-on-hand tools it's listed beside. Advanced is $24 a month for a first year billed yearly ($288), then yearly plans are 20% off the $49 monthly price. Inside the cheaper quarter either way.
- BFree plan and trialFree for 100 unique items, 1 user, 2 active jobs and 1 custom field, with scanning, low-stock alerts and offline use. Quantities of one item don't count against the 100, so one person tracking tools or supplies can stay on it.
- CFeaturesPhotos, folders, custom fields, QR and barcode scanning, check-out to people and jobs, and low-stock and date alerts. It does the equipment and supplies job fully, but it's a smaller job: no store or marketplace links, and purchase orders wait for Ultra.
- AEase of use4.73 from 9,537 App Store ratings, the top band. It's a phone app where you snap a photo, print a label and scan, with very little to set up.
- BPlatforms and integrationsiPhone, Android and web, with QuickBooks Online, Amazon Business, Slack, Microsoft Teams and AppFolio. No desktop app, and the API, webhooks and single sign-on are Enterprise only.

Keep Sortly, or make your own?
Keep it
The plain part of Sortly you could make: inventory and qR codes. What surrounds it you could not. The 3 things listed below take a company, not a weekend.
It is one of the better ones too: its GPA of 3.0 is higher than 10 of the 11 other inventory management tools we grade. It costs $588 a year.
What you could make
- Inventory and qR codes: an app builder makes these well.
What you could not
- Scanning barcodes with a phone camera or a scanner.
- A real app for iOS and Android. Something home-made would be a web page.
- It plugs into other products, QuickBooks Online, Amazon Business and Slack among them.
What this rests on. Sortly’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
