Best for makers costing materials and recipes

Stocksmith, called Craftybase until its recent rename, is for makers who want to know what each product really costs: materials, recipes, labour and cost of goods, with Etsy, Shopify, Amazon and Faire orders taking materials off stock as you sell. It's affordable at the small end, but plans are set by order lines, and batch tracking and automatic stock sync wait for the dearer plans.

Who Stocksmith is for

  • Great if you make and sell on Etsy or Shopify and want to know what each item costs
  • Handy when one material goes into lots of products and you need it deducted as you sell
  • Good for small-batch makers who will need lot traceability as they grow

Who Stocksmith is not for

  • Tight if your orders hold several products, as each product counts as a separate order line
  • Not for you if you scan barcodes in a warehouse, as the listing shows no scanning
  • Too light for resellers of finished goods, since it's built around materials and recipes

Why Stocksmith gets a 2.4

Five grades, each with its reason. The GPA is their average: an A is 4 points, an F is none.

  • BValue for moneyPro's 25 order lines and one sales channel won't stretch to a shop and an online store, so the figure is Studio: $41 a month billed yearly ($490 a year), with 250 order lines and unlimited channels, users and locations. Inside the cheaper quarter of this category.
  • CFree plan and trialNo free plan, but a 14-day free trial on any plan with no credit card required. Long enough to enter your materials and see a real cost per product.
  • CFeaturesMaterials with unit conversion, single and multi-level recipes, cost of goods from materials and labour, and channel imports that deduct materials. It does the maker's costing job fully, but the listing shows no barcode scanning, batch tracking starts on Indie and automatic stock sync on Business.
  • CEase of useNo store rating on record. You'll enter materials, unit conversions and recipes before the cost figures mean anything, which is real setup for a busy maker.
  • BPlatforms and integrationsWeb only, with Shopify, Etsy, Amazon, WooCommerce, Square, Faire, Wix, Squarespace, QuickBooks and Xero. No phone or desktop app is listed.
