Part 01 · Overview

Welcome

What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first

2.6

GPA, above 15 of the 35 other journaling apps we grade

Stoic is a journaling app built around a morning preparation and an evening reflection, with mood check-ins, daily prompts and guided journals in between. It also includes meditation and breathing exercises, trend charts and, on its top tier, AI-generated prompts and analysis of past entries. Apps cover iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, Android and the web, and entries are stored on your devices instead of on the company's servers.

To get you started, here are 9 things to know about Stoic, taken from its own pages and our grades.

The day is laid out for you, prepare in the morning, reflect at night, answer the prompt in between, so you never face an empty page.

The report card

Best for a morning and evening journaling routine

Stoic is a journal built around a morning preparation and an evening reflection, with mood check-ins, guided journals, meditation and breathing. There's no price list: the App Store shows Premium at $6.99 to $39.99 with no billing periods, the AI tier up to $99.99 and Lifetime at $299. Free leaves out the mood tracker, sync and even the app lock, sync is iCloud only, and Stoic says its Android app has fewer features. Android users should look elsewhere.

ToolGPA report cardStoicGraded Oct 10, 2026
SubjectGradeComment
Value for moneyCThere's no price list to judge. The US App Store shows Stoic Premium at $6.99 to $39.99 with nothing to say which is monthly and which yearly, the AI tier at $12.99 to $99.99, and Lifetime Premium at a steep $299.
Free plan and trialCFree gets daily prompts, quotes and affirmations, basic guided journals and a few breathing and meditation exercises. Then the caps, and they're central ones: the mood and habit tracker, widgets, iCloud sync and even the app lock are Premium. The trial is annual-plan only.
FeaturesCOn record: morning and evening reflections, a prompt a day, guided journals on gratitude, stress and relationships, mood and trend charts, meditation and breathing, and AI mentors on the top tier. The gap Stoic states itself: the newer Android app has fewer features than the iOS one.
Ease of useA4.82 from about 35,900 App Store ratings, above the 4.7 an A needs. The day is laid out for you, prepare in the morning, reflect at night, answer the prompt in between, so you never face an empty page.
Platforms and integrationsBiPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, Android and the web, so it's on most things, but sync runs through iCloud, which means Apple devices only. Apple Health and Siri Shortcuts are the only connections on record, and Stoic says the Android app lags.
Grade point averageGood, out of 4.02.6

An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.

Who Stoic is for

  • Fits if you want a set routine: a few minutes in the morning, a few at night
  • Works for Apple users who want entries on their own devices and in their own iCloud

Who it is not for

  • Tight if you're staying free, as the mood and habit tracker, widgets, iCloud sync and the app lock all need Premium
  • Skip it if Android is your main phone, since Stoic says that app has fewer features and sync runs through iCloud
  • Watch out: no price list is published, and the App Store shows Premium at $6.99 to $39.99 without saying which is monthly
  • Pricey if you want the AI mentors, with that tier listed at up to $99.99, or Lifetime Premium at $299
  • Tight if you want to try it month to month, as the free trial is on the annual plan only, once per Apple ID

Good to know

Good for

  • People who want a structured morning and evening journaling routine
  • Apple users who want entries kept on-device and in their own iCloud

Worth knowing

  • The help center lists the mood and habit tracker, custom templates, widgets, iCloud sync and the app lock under Premium.
  • The Android app is newer and, by the vendor's own account, has fewer features than the iOS app.
  • Free trials apply only to the annual plan and can be used once per Apple ID.

Keep it, or make your own?

Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.

Your call

A journal at its plainest is dated entries of text and photos.

You could make the core of Stoic for yourself: daily notes, mood tracking, habit tracking and templates. What you would give up is listed below. Whether that is worth the price is your call.

What you could make

  • Daily notes, mood tracking, habit tracking and templates: an app builder makes these well.

What you could not

  • Apps for macOS, iOS and Android that stay in step with each other.
  • AI features, unless you pay a model provider for each request yourself.
  • Hooks into the device itself: an Apple Watch app.

What this rests on. Stoic’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
