Welcome
What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first
2.8
GPA, above 22 of the 30 other form and survey tools we grade
Tally is an online form builder that works like a text document: questions are typed onto a page and input blocks are inserted much as in Notion. Unlimited forms and submissions are free within a fair use policy, including conditional logic, calculations, payments, signatures and file uploads. The paid plans add branding removal, custom domains, team workspaces and analytics.
To get you started, here are 9 things to know about Tally, taken from its own pages and our grades.

Best for free forms with unlimited submissions
Tally is a form builder where you type the form onto a page, much like Notion. Unlimited forms and submissions are free, with logic, calculations, payments and signatures included, under a fair use policy. Removing Tally's branding, your own domain and team workspaces all need Pro at $24 a month billed yearly, free uploads stop at 10 MB, and there are no phone or desktop apps.
| Subject | Grade | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| Value for money | C | Pro is $24 a month billed yearly, on this category's middle price, or $29 monthly. It is one flat fee with unlimited team members. Business at $74 mostly adds data retention controls and respondent email verification. |
| Free plan and trial | A | Unlimited forms and submissions free, with logic, calculations, payments, signatures and file uploads all included. The walls are 10 MB a file, Tally's badge, and a fair use policy around 50,000 submissions a month. |
| Features | B | The whole forms job, nothing in the listing missing: logic, calculations with variables, checkout forms that take payments, e-signatures, hidden fields, answer piping and embeds or popups. No scheduling or document generation, which a few rivals here do have. |
| Ease of use | C | No store rating on record, and there's still a form to build: you type the questions and drop in input blocks in a document-style editor, much like Notion. |
| Platforms and integrations | B | Web with Notion, Google Sheets, Airtable, Slack and Coda, plus webhooks and Zapier, Make or Pipedream for the rest. No phone or desktop apps at all. |
An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.
Who Tally is for
- Fits if you want unlimited forms and submissions without paying
- Works for Notion users who build pages out of blocks, or small teams paying for Pro to get their own domain
Who it is not for
- Not for you if the Tally branding has to go and you won't pay, since that and custom domains need Pro
- Skip it if you want a phone or desktop app for building forms, as it's web only
- Tight if you take big files on the free plan, where uploads stop at 10 MB each
- Watch out: team collaboration, partial submissions, drop-off analytics and the Google Analytics and Meta Pixel links are paid
- Watch out: free use sits under a fair use policy, and around 50,000 submissions a month leads to a custom plan
Good to know
Good for
- People who want unlimited forms and submissions without paying
- Notion users who like building a page out of blocks
- Small teams that need unbranded forms on their own domain
Worth knowing
- Removing Tally branding, custom domains and team collaboration all require Pro.
- Partial submissions, drop-off analytics and the Google Analytics and Meta Pixel integrations are paid features.
- The free plan limits file uploads to 10 MB per file.
- Free use falls under a fair use policy: sustained volumes around 50,000 submissions a month lead to a custom plan.
Part 02 · Tips
Insider tips
What most people miss: ways to pay less, settings worth changing and the catches
7
Things most people miss, each from its own help pages
The things about Tally that are easy to miss until they cost you: ways to pay less, settings worth changing and the catches at renewal or when you leave. Each one is from Tally’s own pages, linked beside it.
Read on Oct 17, 2026. Read from Tally's help centre (keyboard shortcuts, form settings, payments, file uploads, pre-filled fields and Tally Pro), its pricing page and its terms on 17 October 2026. Not tried out: these tips are what its own pages say.
- 1
Shortcut
Type /q email to add a question and its answer box in one go
Tally's shortcuts page has a slash command for every block, and /q plus a block name adds the question with its input. Start a line with [] for a checkbox, [a] for multiple choice or [v] for a dropdown, and type @ to mention an earlier answer.
tally.so - 2
Setting
Stop repeat entries with Prevent duplicate submissions
In a form's Settings tab, Prevent duplicate submissions lets you pick a field, like an email, a hidden field or the Respondent ID, so each one can only submit once. The same Access section has password protection, a close date and a cap on submissions.
tally.so - 3
Setting
Turn on Save respondent's answers for later on long forms
It keeps unfinished answers in the respondent's browser so they can come back and carry on. Its help page notes the answers aren't there in another browser or in incognito mode, so it won't help someone who starts on a phone and finishes on a laptop.
tally.so - 4
Easy to miss
Fill in fields from the link, on any plan
Add a hidden field, make it a question's default answer, then put the value in the form link, like ?rating=Good on the end. Its help page says this is free for everyone. Names are case-sensitive, and dates go in as YYYY-MM-DD.
tally.so - 5
Pay less
Tally adds nothing on top of Stripe's fees
Its payments page says the payment block works on the free plan and Tally adds no fees of its own, so you only pay Stripe's standard charges. One catch: it can't take recurring payments, so selling subscriptions is out.
tally.so - 6
Renewal
Cancelling Pro only takes effect at the end of what you've paid
Tally's terms say you cancel from the dashboard and a paid plan runs on until the end of the current term. The consumer right to withdraw doesn't apply to Pro or Business, so don't count on money back. Price changes come with at least 30 days' notice.
tally.so - 7
Leaving
Download uploaded files from every page of submissions
The Submissions page has a Download file uploads button, but if you have several pages of submissions you have to press it on each one. Tally keeps the files for as long as your account is open and the responses aren't deleted.

22/30
Other form and survey tools it is graded above
Tally's GPA of 2.8 is higher than 22 of the 30 other form and survey tools we grade, and level with 6.
It stands best on free plan and trial (A, above 27 of 30) and worst on ease of use (C, above 0).
Its paid plans start at $24 a month, against a middle price of $21 for the category: 16 of the 30 others that charge start lower.
On features, ease of use and platforms it scores 2.7 out of 4. 2 tools score higher and cost less.

Keep it, or make your own?
Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.
Keep it
To replace Tally you would be making a builder that other people can use without writing code. That is not a weekend's work, with an AI app builder or without one.
It is one of the better ones too: its GPA of 2.8 is higher than 22 of the 30 other form and survey tools we grade. It costs $288 a year.
What you could make
- Forms, surveys and templates: an app builder makes these well.
What you could not
- A builder that other people can use without writing code.
- It plugs into other products, Notion, Google Sheets and Airtable among them, and has an API.
- Sharing with other people, which means accounts and invitations.
- The depth: we grade its features B, which means it covers the whole job.
What this rests on. Tally’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
