What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first
2.2
GPA, above 6 of the 123 other to-do list apps we grade
TaskTrove is a task manager that you run on your own server, usually from a single Docker container. Tasks are typed in plain language, grouped into projects with sections and labels, and shown as a list, a kanban board or a calendar, with recurring tasks and a focus timer included. The self-hosted base edition is free. A paid Pro edition for collaboration and a hosted service have published prices, but both are still behind a waitlist.
To get you started, here are 9 things to know about TaskTrove, taken from its own pages and our grades.
Today it's a solo tool for people at home with Docker.

The report card
Best for a self-hosted task manager with three views
TaskTrove is a task manager you run on your own server, with list, kanban and calendar views and quick add that reads "every Monday". The self-hosted base edition is free, but collaboration, mobile apps, calendar sync and a hosted version sit behind waitlists, desktop apps are only coming soon, and the latest GitHub release is from January 2026. Today it's a solo tool for people at home with Docker.
| Subject | Grade | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| Value for money | C | The base edition is free only if you run it on a server yourself, which isn't really free. Pro is a one-time $129 for 1 user, more than two years of this category's middle plan, and Hosted is $4 a user a month billed annually, about mid-table. Neither can be bought yet: both are waitlist only. |
| Free plan and trial | B | Free (Self-hosted) has no caps: unlimited tasks, projects and tags, plain-language quick add, list, kanban and calendar views, recurring tasks, a focus timer and API access. One person could really live on it, so long as they can run a server and don't need a phone app. |
| Features | C | Quick add that reads "tomorrow at 2pm" or "every Monday", projects with sections and labels, three views, unlimited subtasks, search and a focus timer. The gaps are on record, though: no mobile apps, desktop apps only coming soon, no external calendar sync, and collaboration sits in a Pro edition that isn't on sale. |
| Ease of use | D | You host it yourself. It starts from one Docker command and keeps everything in a single JSON file, but it's still a server to run, and the hosted version is only marked coming soon. |
| Platforms and integrations | B | A web app on your own server, with API access in every edition, the free one included, which is the one thing you can wire it into. No integrations are listed. Mobile apps are part of Pro, which is waitlist only, and desktop apps are coming soon. |
An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.
Who TaskTrove is for
- Fits if you want your tasks on your own server and already know your way around Docker
- Works for typing tasks the way you'd say them, like every Monday or next Friday
Who it is not for
- Skip it if you've never run a server, because the hosted version is still coming soon
- Not for you if you need to share projects today, as collaboration is Pro and Pro is waitlist only
- Not for you if you want a phone or desktop app now, since mobile is Pro and desktop is only coming soon
- Pricey if you join the Pro waitlist, at $129 once for 1 user with 1 year of updates
- Watch out: the latest public release on GitHub, v0.12.4, is dated January 9, 2026
Good to know
Good for
- Individuals who want a task manager on their own server
- Typing tasks with dates and recurrence in plain language
- Switching between list, kanban and calendar views
- Keeping all task data in one JSON file that is easy to back up
Worth knowing
- Pro and Hosted cannot be bought yet: the pricing page offers a waitlist for each, and Hosted is marked coming soon.
- The free edition has no multi-user collaboration, mobile apps, custom themes or external calendar sync. Desktop apps are listed as coming soon.
- The code is published under the Sustainable Use License, which the vendor labels fair-code.
- The latest public release on GitHub, v0.12.4, is dated January 9, 2026.

Keep it, or make your own?
Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.
Your call
A to-do list at its plainest is tasks with dates, repeats and a box to tick.
You could make the core of TaskTrove for yourself: tasks, natural-language input, kanban boards and calendar. What you would give up is listed below. Whether that is worth the price is your call. It costs $48 a year.
What you could make
- Tasks, natural-language input, kanban boards and calendar: an app builder makes these well.
- It runs in a browser, which is where something home-made would run too.
What you could not
- It is priced for each person, which means accounts and billing for a team.
- An API that other software can build on.
What this rests on. TaskTrove’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
