How we grade them

Value for money
AFree on every platform under the MIT license, with no premium tier and no trial. There's simply nothing to buy. Development runs on optional donations through GitHub Sponsors.
BThe base edition is free. Pro is a one-time $129 for 1 user, with a year of updates, which is nearly three years of a typical to-do subscription. Hosted is priced at $4 a user a month billed annually, about typical. Neither can be bought yet: both are waitlist only.
Free plan and trial
AEvery feature on every platform is free, with no account needed. There's no paid plan, so there are no limits to bump into. Download it and you have the lot.
AFree (Self-hosted) has no caps: unlimited tasks, projects and tags, plain-language quick add, list, kanban and calendar views, recurring tasks, a focus timer and API access. One person could stay on it for good.
Features
ATasks with subtasks, tags, projects and repeats, shown as lists, a Kanban board or an Eisenhower Matrix. Starting a task tracks time against it, and that becomes time sheets. Add Pomodoro and Flowtime sessions, a day planner beside your calendar, and issue imports from Jira, GitHub and GitLab.
BQuick add that reads "tomorrow at 2pm" or "every Monday", projects with sections and labels, three views, unlimited subtasks, search and a focus timer. Solid. But collaboration, mobile apps, custom themes and external calendar sync are all Pro, and Pro isn't on sale yet.
Ease of use
BNo account, and your data sits on your device from the first minute. But syncing two devices means connecting Dropbox, WebDAV or SuperSync yourself, and SuperSync is labeled beta. There's no rating on record to go by, so a B.
DYou host it yourself. It starts from one Docker command and keeps everything in a single JSON file, which is about as gentle as self-hosting gets. But it's still a server to run, and the hosted version is only marked coming soon.
Platforms and integrations
AWindows, Mac, Linux, iPhone, Android and the web, with links to Jira, GitHub, GitLab, Gitea, Trello, Google Calendar and Dropbox. One catch: the web app is more limited, as calendar integration and WebDAV sync are likely to fail in a browser.
BA web app on your own server, with API access in every edition, the free one included. No integrations are listed. Mobile apps are part of Pro, which is waitlist only, and desktop apps are listed as coming soon.

Who each one suits

Super Productivity

  • Developers who plan their day from Jira, GitHub or GitLab issues
  • Freelancers who need time sheets from the tasks they tracked
  • People who want a free app that keeps data on their own device

TaskTrove

  • Individuals who want a task manager on their own server
  • Typing tasks with dates and recurrence in plain language
  • Switching between list, kanban and calendar views
  • Keeping all task data in one JSON file that is easy to back up

Worth knowing

Super Productivity

  • The web app is more limited than the desktop app: calendar integration and WebDAV sync are likely to fail in a browser because of CORS.
  • SuperSync is labeled beta, and the project's wiki suggests Nextcloud, WebDAV or Dropbox for production use until it is stable.
  • Fetching issues and sending work logs needs a network connection, and a failed issue update is not retried automatically.
  • The project is maintained by volunteers and funded by donations; help comes from the community on GitHub and Reddit.

TaskTrove

  • Pro and Hosted cannot be bought yet: the pricing page offers a waitlist for each, and Hosted is marked coming soon.
  • The free edition has no multi-user collaboration, mobile apps, custom themes or external calendar sync. Desktop apps are listed as coming soon.
  • The code is published under the Sustainable Use License, which the vendor labels fair-code.
  • The latest public release on GitHub, v0.12.4, is dated January 9, 2026.

Key features

Super Productivity

Tasks, projects and boards
Tasks take subtasks, notes, tags, projects and repeat rules, and can be viewed as lists, on a Kanban board, in an Eisenhower Matrix or on boards you build yourself.
Time tracking and time sheets
Starting a task tracks time against it. Tracked time can be turned into time sheets and work summaries for export to a company's time-tracking system.
Focus mode and break reminders
Focus mode offers Pomodoro, Flowtime and countdown sessions, and a break reminder tells you when it is time to step away.
Planner and schedule
The planner lays the day out on a schedule timeline next to calendar events, which come in through Google Calendar or any CalDAV calendar.
Issue tracker imports
Issues assigned to you can be imported from Jira, GitHub, GitLab, Gitea and other trackers, with time tracked per issue and work logs sent back.
Local data and optional sync
Data is stored on the device and no account is needed. Devices can sync through Dropbox, WebDAV or SuperSync, the project's end-to-end encrypted service that can be self-hosted.

TaskTrove

Natural-language quick add
Phrases such as "tomorrow at 2pm", "next Friday" or "every Monday" are parsed into due dates and recurrence as a task is typed, and tasks can hold unlimited subtasks.
List, kanban and calendar views
Tasks are grouped into projects with sections and color-coded labels, and each project can be viewed as a list, a kanban board or a calendar, with filtering, sorting and search.
Recurring tasks and a focus timer
Tasks repeat on daily, weekly, monthly or custom patterns, and a built-in focus timer is part of the free edition.
Simple self-hosting
The app starts from one Docker command and stores its data in a JSON file that can be copied as a backup. It needs no login by default, and a password can be turned on with a setting.
API access
The feature table lists API access in every edition, including the free one, and the documentation has an API reference.
Pro collaboration and rewards
The Pro documentation describes task owners and assignees, shared projects with permission controls, @assignee parsing in quick add, and a points, badges and leaderboard system.
