Part 01 · Overview
Welcome
What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first
2.6
GPA, above 8 of the 21 other spreadsheet and database tools we grade
Teable is a no-code database with a spreadsheet-style grid, linked tables and form, kanban, gallery and calendar views. AI is built in as AI fields, a chat sidebar called Cuppy, and an app builder that turns table data into apps, dashboards and portals. It runs as a cloud service hosted in the United States, and a free Community Edition under the AGPL-3.0 license can be self-hosted, with a paid license for automation, AI and admin features.
To get you started, here are 9 things to know about Teable, taken from its own pages and our grades.
No rating on record, and the work is building the base: tables, links, views and automations.
- 1
Best for an Airtable-style database with AI built in
Teable is an Airtable-style database with AI wired through it: fields that summarise or tag records, a chat sidebar called Cuppy, and an app builder that makes dashboards from a prompt.

As its pricing page puts it: $13 per seat / month, billed yearly ($24 billed monthly).
- 3

- 5
Grid, form, kanban, gallery and calendar
Records are edited in a spreadsheet-like grid or shown as kanban cards, an image gallery or a calendar. Form views collect submissions and save each one as a new record.
- 6
Linked records and formulas
Link-to-record, lookup and rollup fields connect tables and summarize related records, and formula fields calculate from other fields. A button field starts an automation from a record.
- 7
AI fields and AI chat
AI fields turn record data into summaries, tags, scores, translations or extracted values. The Cuppy chat sidebar analyzes the current table, view, selected records or files in plain language.

A 2.6 GPA, above 8 of 21
That is against the other spreadsheet and database tools we grade, on value, the free plan, features, ease of use and platforms.
- 9
Keep it
To replace Teable you would be making a builder that other people can use without writing code. That is not a weekend's work, with an AI app builder or without one.

The report card
Best for an Airtable-style database with AI built in
Teable is an Airtable-style database with AI wired through it: fields that summarise or tag records, a chat sidebar called Cuppy, and an app builder that makes dashboards from a prompt. The open-source Community Edition has no row limits but no automation or AI, the free cloud plan stops at 1,000 rows, and Pro is $13 a seat billed yearly or $24 monthly.
| Subject | Grade | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| Value for money | C | Pro is $13 a seat a month billed yearly, which is right at the dear quarter for this category and above the $9.99 middle. That buys 250,000 rows, 25,000 automation runs a month and 2,000 AI credits a seat. Pay monthly and it's $24. Commenters and Viewers are free. |
| Free plan and trial | B | The free cloud plan has unlimited seats but stops at 1,000 rows and 1 GB per space, with 100 automation runs a month and 200 AI credits that never refill. Self-hosting the Community Edition has no row or storage limits, but no automation and no AI. |
| Features | B | It covers the whole no-code database job: grid, form, kanban, gallery and calendar views over linked tables, lookup, rollup and formula fields, AI fields that summarise, tag or translate, automations from record changes, schedules, webhooks or email, and an App Builder that makes portals from a prompt. |
| Ease of use | C | No rating on record, and the work is building the base: tables, links, views and automations. The grid behaves like a spreadsheet, and the AI chat will carry your data over from Airtable, Baserow, NocoDB or Smartsheet with fields and relationships kept. |
| Platforms and integrations | B | A browser only, with no desktop or phone apps listed, so an A is out. It hooks into Slack, Telegram, Gmail, GitHub, Discord and Microsoft Teams, and automations can call HTTP APIs and start from webhooks. The cloud service is hosted in the United States. |
An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.
Who Teable is for
- Fits if you want an Airtable-style database you can host on your own servers
- Works for pulling structured fields out of receipts, contracts and resumes with AI fields
Who it is not for
- Tight if you're staying on the free cloud plan, which stops at 1,000 rows and 200 one-time AI credits
- Pricey if you pay monthly, at $24 a seat against $13 billed yearly
- Skip it if you hoped to self-host for free with automations, as those and the AI need a paid licence
- Watch out: a self-hosted licence is pre-paid and can't be changed, downgraded or refunded once issued
- Watch out: every Owner, Creator and Editor is a paid seat, and there are no phone or desktop apps
Good to know
Good for
- Teams that want an Airtable-style database they can host themselves
- Building internal apps and dashboards on table data by chatting with AI
- Pulling structured fields out of files such as receipts, contracts and resumes
Worth knowing
- Free cloud spaces stop at 1,000 rows, 1 GB of attachments and 100 automation runs a month, and the 200 AI credits do not refill.
- Every Owner, Creator and Editor takes a paid seat on Pro and Business; Commenters and Viewers are free.
- The free self-hosted Community Edition has no automation or AI features; those need a paid self-hosted license.
- A self-hosted license is pre-paid and cannot be modified, downgraded or refunded once its key has been issued.

Keep it, or make your own?
Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.
Keep it
To replace Teable you would be making a builder that other people can use without writing code. That is not a weekend's work, with an AI app builder or without one.
It costs $156 a year. Teable is open source, so there is a third way: take its code and run it yourself.
What you could not
- A builder that other people can use without writing code.
- A tool that builds and hosts other apps.
- Connections to other products, each kept working as those products change.
- Databases with views, filters and links between them.
- It is priced for each person, which means accounts and billing for a team.
- AI features, unless you pay a model provider for each request yourself.
- The depth: we grade its features B, which means it covers the whole job.
What this rests on. Teable’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
