Part 01 · Overview

Welcome

What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first

2.4

GPA, above 8 of the 42 other time tracking apps we grade

Time Doctor is time tracking and workforce analytics software for distributed teams. A desktop app records hours either in the background or under the user's control, with optional screenshots, and higher plans add web and app usage reports, productivity ratings, attendance, schedules and payroll. AI reports that benchmark teams and flag unusual activity are part of Premium or sold as add-ons.

To get you started, here are 9 things to know about Time Doctor, taken from its own pages and our grades.

Staff install the desktop app and it tracks, but a manager sets up the productivity ratings, schedules and teams first.
From our grade for ease of use
  1. 1

Best for proof of hours for remote teams

Time Doctor is time tracking for managers of remote teams who want proof of hours: a desktop app that tracks silently or under the user's control, optional screenshots, and usage and productivity reports from Standard up.

  2. 2

Paid plans start at $6.67 a month for each person

As its pricing page puts it: $6.67 per user / month, billed annually ($8 month-to-month).

  3. 3

    You can try it first

14-day free trial of all Premium plan features, no credit card required

  4. 4

    It runs on 6 platforms

Web, macOS, Windows, Linux, iOS and Android, with a browser extension too.

  5. 5

    Automatic or interactive tracking

The desktop app tracks time either silently in the background or under the user's control with tasks, online or offline. The web app is for dashboards, reports and settings only.

  6. 6

    Screenshots and screen recording

Optional screenshots are part of every plan and can be configured per team. Video screen recording comes with Premium and is an add-on for Basic and Standard.

  7. 7

    Web and app usage

From Standard, reports show which websites and apps time went to, with configurable productivity ratings and an activity summary for people and teams.

  8. 8

    A 2.4 GPA, above 8 of 42

That is against the other time tracking apps we grade, on value, the free plan, features, ease of use and platforms.

The report card

Best for proof of hours for remote teams

Time Doctor is time tracking for managers of remote teams who want proof of hours: a desktop app that tracks silently or under the user's control, optional screenshots, and usage and productivity reports from Standard up. There's no free plan, only a 14-day trial. Basic at $6.67 keeps 3 months of history and leaves out usage reports and integrations, the web app can't track time, and staff who dislike being watched should look elsewhere.

SubjectGradeComment
Value for moneyDBasic is $6.67 a user a month billed annually, bang on the category's middle, but it keeps only 3 months of history. What people buy Time Doctor for, web and app usage, productivity ratings, payroll and the 60+ integrations, is Standard at $11.67, and the API and SSO are Premium at $16.70.
Free plan and trialCNo free plan. Every new account gets a 14-day trial of all the Premium features and it needs no credit card, and then a paid plan follows.
FeaturesBTracking runs silently or under the user's control, online or offline, with optional screenshots on every plan. Then web and app usage, productivity ratings, schedules, attendance, approvals, payroll reports and a report that flags mouse jigglers. The monitoring job is covered.
Ease of useCNo store rating on record. Staff install the desktop app and it tracks, but a manager sets up the productivity ratings, schedules and teams first. One quirk to know: you can't track time in the web app at all, only in the apps.
Platforms and integrationsAWeb, Mac, Windows, Linux, iOS, Android and browser extensions, with 60+ integrations from Standard and an open API on Premium. The phone apps record work hours and nothing else, and the Linux app supports Ubuntu on Xorg only.
Grade point averageFair, out of 4.02.4

An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.

Who Time Doctor is for

  • Fits if you manage a distributed or outsourced team and need records of hours worked
  • Works for managers who want web and app usage reports and prepare payroll from tracked time

Who it is not for

  • Skip it if you want a free plan, because a paid plan follows the 14-day trial
  • Pricey if you need integrations or usage reports, which start on Standard at $11.67 a user; the API and SSO wait for Premium at $16.70
  • Tight if you're on Basic and need older records, since it keeps 3 months of history; Standard keeps 6 and Premium 2 years
  • Watch out: the phone apps record work hours only, with no screenshots or app tracking, and the web app can't track time at all
  • Not for you if you run Linux other than Ubuntu on Xorg, as that's the only Linux setup the app supports

Good to know

Good for

  • Distributed and outsourced teams that need verifiable records of hours
  • Managers who want web and app usage reports with productivity ratings
  • Companies preparing payroll from tracked time and attendance

Worth knowing

  • The pricing page lists no free plan; a paid plan follows the 14-day trial.
  • Tracking history is kept for 3 months on Basic and 6 months on Standard; 2 years needs Premium.
  • The mobile apps record work hours but do not capture screenshots, apps or other phone activity.
  • Time cannot be tracked in the web app itself, and the Linux desktop app supports Ubuntu on Xorg only.

Keep it, or make your own?

Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.

Keep it

The plain part of Time Doctor you could make: time tracking and reports. What surrounds it you could not. The 5 things listed below take a company, not a weekend.

That makes this kind of software worth paying for, not this one in particular: 24 of the 42 other time tracking apps grade higher. It costs $80.04 a year.

What you could make

  • Time tracking and reports: an app builder makes these well.

What you could not

  • Apps for macOS, Windows, Linux, iOS and Android that stay in step with each other.
  • It is priced for each person, which means accounts and billing for a team.
  • It plugs into other products, Asana, ClickUp and GitHub among them, and has an API.
  • AI features, unless you pay a model provider for each request yourself.
  • The depth: we grade its features B, which means it covers the whole job.

What this rests on. Time Doctor’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
