Part 01 · Overview
Welcome
What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first
2.4
GPA, above 27 of the 123 other to-do list apps we grade
Vikunja is an open-source to-do and project app licensed under the AGPLv3. It can run on your own server at no cost, or you can pay for Vikunja Cloud, the maker's managed hosting in the EU. Tasks live in projects that can be shown as a list, a kanban board, a Gantt chart or a table, and a project can be shared with other users, with teams or through a link.
To get you started, here are 9 things to know about Vikunja, taken from its own pages and our grades.
Phones are the weak spot: the Android app is an alpha covering only very basic features, and there's no iPhone support.
- 1
Best for open-source tasks with board and Gantt views
Vikunja is an open-source task manager that shows one project as a list, a kanban board, a Gantt chart or a table.
- 2
Paid plans start at about $3.74 a month
As its pricing page puts it: €4 per month, or €40 billed yearly (Vikunja Cloud Personal).
- 3
There is a free plan
Self-hosting is free under the AGPLv3 with all core features, on a server you maintain, update and back up yourself. Vikunja Cloud has no free plan.
- 4
It runs on 5 platforms
Web, macOS, Windows, Linux and Android.
- 5
List, kanban, Gantt and table views
Each project can be shown as a list, a kanban board, a table with selectable columns or a Gantt chart, and you can switch between them at any time.
- 6
Quick Add Magic
Typing a date, a *label, an @assignee, a +project or a !priority into a task title sets those fields as the task is created. It works in the web UI.
- 7
Sharing, teams and link shares
A project can be shared with one user, a team or a link. Link shares let people view or edit tasks without an account, with the same permission levels.
- 8
A 2.4 GPA, above 27 of 123
That is against the other to-do list apps we grade, on value, the free plan, features, ease of use and platforms.
- 9
Keep it
The plain part of Vikunja you could make: tasks, kanban boards, Gantt & timelines and natural-language input. What surrounds it you could not. The 4 things listed below take a company, not a weekend.

The report card
Best for open-source tasks with board and Gantt views
Vikunja is an open-source task manager that shows one project as a list, a kanban board, a Gantt chart or a table. You can run it on your own server for free, or pay €4 a month for Vikunja Cloud, which has no free plan. Phones are the weak spot: the Android app is an alpha covering only very basic features, and there's no iPhone support. If your list lives on your phone, look elsewhere.
| Subject | Grade | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| Value for money | C | Vikunja Cloud Personal is €4 a month, or €40 billed yearly, which lands in the middle of what this category charges. Family is €10 a month for up to 5 users. The free route is self-hosting, so that one costs you a server. Prices are in euros only. |
| Free plan and trial | C | Vikunja Cloud has no free plan at all, just a 14-day trial on every plan. Free forever means hosting it yourself, where you get all the core features but the server, updates and backups are your job. |
| Features | B | The whole job is here: list, kanban, Gantt and table views of one project, Quick Add Magic for dates, labels and assignees as you type, reminders, repeats, subtasks and relations such as blockers, and importers from Todoist, Trello, Microsoft To Do and TickTick. |
| Ease of use | C | No rating on record. On Cloud the maker runs the server, but the work is still yours: projects to build, views to pick, people to invite. Quick Add Magic only works in the web UI, and the free route means maintaining a server yourself. |
| Platforms and integrations | B | Web, with desktop apps for Mac, Windows and Linux, a REST API, webhooks, an n8n node and an MCP endpoint. Phones are the gap: the Android app is an alpha pre-release covering only very basic features, and the maker gives no iPhone support. |
An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.
Who Vikunja is for
- Fits if you want your task data on a server you control, with the code open under the AGPLv3
- Works for a household or team that shares projects in board and Gantt views
Who it is not for
- Skip it if you live on your iPhone, because the maker gives no iPhone support and the Android app is an alpha
- Not for you if you want a free hosted plan: Cloud has a 14-day trial, and free means running and backing up your own server
- Watch out: the vendor describes its CalDAV sync as early alpha with known bugs
- Watch out: the admin panel, audit logs and time tracking sit in Vikunja Pro, a paid add-on in private beta with no public prices
- Watch out: Cloud prices are listed in euros only, and Quick Add Magic works only in the web UI
Good to know
Good for
- People who want their task data on a server they control
- Households and teams sharing projects across list, board and Gantt views
- Moving off Todoist, Trello or Microsoft To Do with a built-in importer
Worth knowing
- Vikunja Cloud has no free plan. The free option is self-hosting, where server maintenance, updates and backups are your job.
- The mobile app is an alpha pre-release for Android that the docs say covers only very basic features, and the maker gives no iPhone support.
- The admin panel, audit logs and time tracking belong to Vikunja Pro, a paid add-on for self-hosted instances in private beta with no public prices.
- Cloud prices are listed in euros only, and the vendor describes its CalDAV integration as early alpha with known bugs.

Part 04 · Standing
Where it stands
Its grades against its category, and whether to keep it or make your own
27/123
Other to-do list apps it is graded above
Vikunja's GPA of 2.4 is higher than 27 of the 123 other to-do list apps we grade, and level with 20.
It stands best on features (B, above 81 of 123) and worst on free plan and trial (C, above 6).
Its paid plans start at about $3.74 a month, against a middle price of $3 for the category: 41 of the 68 others that charge start lower.
On features, ease of use and platforms it scores 2.7 out of 4. 10 tools score higher and cost less.

Keep it, or make your own?
Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.
Keep it
The plain part of Vikunja you could make: tasks, kanban boards, Gantt & timelines and natural-language input. What surrounds it you could not. The 4 things listed below take a company, not a weekend.
That makes this kind of software worth paying for, not this one in particular: 76 of the 123 other to-do list apps grade higher. It costs $44.82 a year. Vikunja is open source, so there is a third way: take its code and run it yourself.
What you could make
- Tasks, kanban boards, Gantt & timelines and natural-language input: an app builder makes these well.
What you could not
- Apps for macOS, Windows, Linux and Android that stay in step with each other.
- It plugs into other products, n8n, Home Assistant and Claude Code among them, and has an API.
- Sharing with other people, which means accounts and invitations.
- The depth: we grade its features B, which means it covers the whole job.
What this rests on. Vikunja’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
