Part 01 · Overview
Welcome
What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first
2.0
GPA, above 1 of the 9 other online store builders we grade
Volusion is a hosted ecommerce platform from Austin, Texas, for small and mid-sized businesses that sell online. Stores get themes and a site designer, inventory with warehouses and purchase orders, a checkout that takes cards, PayPal and Amazon Pay, and SEO and reporting tools. Plans are capped by yearly sales, and stores that use Volusion Payments, powered by Stripe, pay no transaction fee.
To get you started, here are 9 things to know about Volusion, taken from its own pages and our grades.
- 1
Best for stock across warehouses, with purchase orders
But it's a web store and not much else, and Volusion says all sales are final, so there's no refund if it doesn't work out.
- 2
Paid plans start at $35 a month
As its pricing page puts it: $35 per month (Personal).
- 3
You can try it first
14-day free trial, no credit card required
- 4

- 5
Themes and site design
Free and premium responsive themes, a Site Designer with content blocks, and an HTML and CSS editor for those who code.
- 6
Inventory, warehouses and purchase orders
Track stock and reorder levels, assign products to warehouse locations, and create purchase orders automatically when items sell.
- 7
Checkout and payments
Premium Checkout takes cards, PayPal, Amazon Pay, electronic checks and more. Volusion Payments, powered by Stripe, carries no transaction fee from Volusion.
- 8
A 2.0 GPA, above 1 of 9
That is against the other online store builders we grade, on value, the free plan, features, ease of use and platforms.
- 9
Keep it
To replace Volusion you would be making checkout, card payments and sales tax handled for you. That is not a weekend's work, with an AI app builder or without one.

The report card
Best for stock across warehouses, with purchase orders
Volusion has been around since 1999 and is strongest on stock: warehouses, reorder levels and purchase orders raised as things sell. Personal is $35 a month with your own domain. But it's a web store and not much else, and Volusion says all sales are final, so there's no refund if it doesn't work out.
| Subject | Grade | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| Value for money | C | Personal is $35 a month for up to $50K of sales a year, with your own domain and 100 products, and no yearly rate on record. That's a bit above this category's middle. Volusion adds 2% to each sale unless you use Volusion Payments. |
| Free plan and trial | C | No free plan, but a 14-day trial with no card needed. Worth using properly, because Volusion gives no refunds once you're paying. |
| Features | C | Good on stock: warehouses, reorder levels and automatic purchase orders, plus subscriptions, gift cards and local currencies. But nothing on record sells beyond the web store, no POS or marketplaces, and Personal lacks CRM, reviews and abandoned-cart reports. |
| Ease of use | C | No store rating on record. Themes and the Site Designer get a store going, with an HTML and CSS editor if you code, but it's still a store to build and stock to set up. |
| Platforms and integrations | C | Web only, and the named connections are mostly ways to pay: Stripe, PayPal and Amazon Pay, plus Avalara for tax, Facebook and Twitter. API access starts on Business at $299 a month. |
An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.
Who Volusion is for
- Great if you reorder stock often and want purchase orders raised for you
- Handy when you keep stock in more than one warehouse
- Good for stores happy to use Volusion Payments and skip the extra fee
Who it is not for
- Skip it if you want a way out, as Volusion says all sales are final with no refunds
- Tight if you have more than 100 products, since Personal stops there
- Not for you if you also sell at a counter or on marketplaces, as none of that is on record
Good to know
Good for
- Small and mid-sized stores that want hosting, checkout and stock in one plan
- Sellers who manage stock across warehouses and reorder with purchase orders
- Stores willing to use Volusion Payments to avoid extra fees
Worth knowing
- With a gateway other than Volusion Payments, a fee applies to each sale: 2% on Personal, 1.25% on Professional and 0.8% on Business.
- Each plan caps yearly sales over a trailing 12 months, and a store that passes its cap is moved up to the next plan automatically.
- Personal allows only 100 products and lacks CRM, reviews and abandoned-cart reports; API access starts on Business.
- Volusion says all sales are final and it gives no refunds; a cancellation takes effect at the end of the current term.

Keep it, or make your own?
Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.
Keep it
To replace Volusion you would be making checkout, card payments and sales tax handled for you. That is not a weekend's work, with an AI app builder or without one.
That makes this kind of software worth paying for, not this one in particular: 8 of the 9 other online store builders grade higher. It costs $420 a year.
What you could make
- Inventory and reports: an app builder makes these well.
What you could not
- Checkout, card payments and sales tax handled for you.
- It plugs into other products, Stripe, PayPal and Amazon Pay among them, and has an API.
What this rests on. Volusion’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
