The report card
Best for colour notes and reminders on your phone, no login
WeNote is a phone notepad for Android and iPhone with color-coded notes, lists, reminders and a calendar, no login, and ads in the free app. Extras are in-app purchases from $0.99 to $49.99 with no billing basis shown, sync costs extra, Android and iPhone can't sync with each other, the calendar ignores Google Calendar, and there's no desktop or web version.
| Subject | Grade | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| Value for money | C | Hard to pin down, which is the problem. The Combo is $34.99 once on the US App Store, but single items run from $0.99 to $49.99 with no billing basis shown, iCloud sync is another $14.99, and WeNote Cloud is $5 a month, near this category's $6 middle, and not in the Combo. |
| Free plan and trial | B | One person could live on the free app: notes, to-do lists, reminders, the calendar, note lock and local backup, with ads but none full-screen. Undo and redo, search inside a note, home widgets and extra themes are paid, and which ones differs between Android and iOS. |
| Features | C | For a phone notepad it's complete: notes and checklists with labels and colours, repeating reminders, a calendar with holidays for 250 countries, pictures, drawings and voice in a note, and locks. The gaps are in its own FAQ: Android and iPhone can't sync with each other, and the calendar ignores Google Calendar. |
| Ease of use | A | 4.83 on the App Store from about 1,000 ratings, enough for an A on our ladder. There's no login, so you open it and write, and labels sit across the top as tabs you swipe between. |
| Platforms and integrations | C | Phones only: Android and iPhone. The FAQ says there's no Windows version and no web app is offered. Android syncs to Google Drive or WeNote Cloud and iPhone to iCloud, and the two don't meet. |
An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.
Who WeNote is for
- Fits if you want notes, lists and reminders in one phone app without making an account
- Works for keeping a few notes behind a PIN, pattern or fingerprint
Who it is not for
- Skip it if you want your notes on a computer, as there's no desktop or web version
- Not for you if your household mixes Android and iPhone, because they can't sync with each other
- Pricey if you want WeNote Cloud, at $5 a month on top of the one-time Combo
- Watch out: in-app prices run from $0.99 to $49.99 with no billing basis shown, and iCloud sync is another $14.99
- Tight if you use Google Calendar, since WeNote's calendar is separate and doesn't sync with it
Good to know
Good for
- Phone users who want notes and to-do lists with reminders in one app
- Shopping lists and sticky-note widgets on an Android home screen
- People who want a notes app that works without an account
Worth knowing
- Android and iPhone only: the FAQ says there is no Windows version, and no web app is offered.
- Android and iOS do not sync with each other. iOS supports iCloud sync only, and moving from Android is a one-time transfer through an emailed backup file.
- The calendar is separate from Google Calendar and does not sync with it.
- WeNote Cloud is a $5 a month subscription that the one-time Combo purchase does not include.

Keep it, or make your own?
Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.
Your call
A notes app at its plainest is text in folders with a search box.
You could make the core of WeNote for yourself: notes, tasks and calendar. What you would give up is listed below. Whether that is worth the price is your call.
What you could make
- Notes, tasks and calendar: an app builder makes these well.
What you could not
- A real app for iOS and Android. Something home-made would be a web page.
- Hooks into the device itself: handwriting.
What this rests on. WeNote’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
