Part 01 · Overview

Welcome

What it is, who it suits, its grades and the ten things to know first

2.6

GPA, above 48 of the 123 other to-do list apps we grade

Yata is a to-do app for Apple devices modeled on the Getting Things Done method. It keeps unprocessed captures apart from actions, projects, contexts and lists, and shows to-dos next to calendar events in list, day, multi-day, week and month views. Data syncs through iCloud, and the app is a free download with optional monthly, yearly and lifetime in-app purchases.

To get you started, here are 9 things to know about Yata, taken from its own pages and our grades.

  1. 1

Best for Getting Things Done on Apple devices

Yata is a Getting Things Done app for Apple devices, with an inbox, next actions, projects and contexts shown next to your calendar events.

  2. 2

Paid plans start at $2 a month

As its pricing page puts it: $2.00 per month.

  3. 3

    There is a free plan

The app is a free download. Neither the App Store listing nor the website says which features the Monthly, Yearly and Lifetime in-app purchases unlock.

  4. 4

    It runs on 2 platforms

    iOS and macOS.

  5. 5

    Captures and Inbox

A capture holds a thought that is not yet actionable. The Inbox lists unprocessed captures until each is turned into an action, deferred with a reminder, filed in a list or trashed.

  6. 6

Next Actions, Waiting For and Projects

An action is scheduled for a date, marked as a Next Action or marked Waiting For. Projects group multi-step outcomes and can suggest next actions from checkboxes in their notes.

  7. 7

    Contexts

Contexts work like tags for people, places or kinds of work. Actions and captures can carry several, and agendas filter items down to a chosen set of contexts.

  8. 8

    A 2.6 GPA, above 48 of 123

That is against the other to-do list apps we grade, on value, the free plan, features, ease of use and platforms.

  9. 9

    Keep it

The plain part of Yata you could make: tasks, calendar, time blocking and natural-language input. What surrounds it you could not. The 4 things listed below take a company, not a weekend.

The report card

Best for Getting Things Done on Apple devices

Yata is a Getting Things Done app for Apple devices, with an inbox, next actions, projects and contexts shown next to your calendar events. It costs $5.00 a year or $10.00 once, but neither the App Store nor the website says what paying unlocks. It needs iOS 17 or macOS 14, Planning Mode is missing on the Mac, and there's nothing for Android, Windows or the web.

ToolGPA report cardYataGraded Oct 10, 2026
SubjectGradeComment
Value for moneyAYearly is $5.00. That's about 42 cents a month against a category that mostly starts near $4 a month, and Lifetime is $10.00 if you'd rather pay once and be done. The snag is that neither the App Store listing nor the website says what any of those purchases unlock.
Free plan and trialCIt's a free download on every Apple device it runs on, and there's no trial to start, because the app itself is the free version. But the listing never says where free stops and the paid purchases begin, so you can't know in advance what you'd be nudged to buy.
FeaturesBThe whole Getting Things Done job is covered: an Inbox for captures, Next Actions, Waiting For, projects and contexts, plus a calendar in day, week and month views, time blocks, routines, Quick Add and Apple Shortcuts. One hole the listing admits: Planning Mode doesn't work on the Mac.
Ease of useCNo rating on record. Quick Add reads normal language and you drag things around the calendar, but this is Getting Things Done, so you're learning a method as well as an app: captures, contexts, agendas. The site has a user guide for a reason.
Platforms and integrationsCiPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Vision and Apple Watch, synced through iCloud, with Apple Shortcuts. One family of devices and nothing outside it: no Android, no Windows, no web, and Planning Mode is missing on the Mac.
Grade point averageGood, out of 4.02.6

An A is worth 4 points, a B 3, a C 2, a D 1 and an F nothing. The GPA is the average of the five.

Who Yata is for

  • Fits if you follow Getting Things Done and every device you own is Apple
  • Works for people who want to-dos and calendar events in one schedule

Who it is not for

  • Skip it if you use Android, Windows or a browser, as it's Apple devices only
  • Not for you if you want to know what a purchase unlocks before you pay, because nobody says
  • Tight if your devices are older, since it needs iOS 17, iPadOS 17 or macOS 14 or later
  • Watch out: Planning Mode isn't available on macOS, and the App Store listing is in English only
  • Not for you if you want a plain list, since this asks you to learn Getting Things Done as well

Good to know

Good for

  • People who follow Getting Things Done on Apple devices
  • Seeing to-dos and calendar events in one schedule
  • Buyers who would pay once for a lifetime unlock over a subscription

Worth knowing

  • Apple devices only: the App Store lists iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Vision and Apple Watch, and there is no Android, Windows or web version.
  • Neither the website nor the App Store listing says which features need the Monthly, Yearly or Lifetime purchase.
  • It requires iOS 17, iPadOS 17 or macOS 14 or later, and Planning Mode is not available on macOS.
  • English is the only language on the App Store listing.

Keep it, or make your own?

Whether this is something you could build for yourself with an AI app builder, and what you would give up.

Keep it

The plain part of Yata you could make: tasks, calendar, time blocking and natural-language input. What surrounds it you could not. The 4 things listed below take a company, not a weekend.

It costs $24 a year.

What you could make

  • Tasks, calendar, time blocking and natural-language input: an app builder makes these well.

What you could not

  • Apps for macOS and iOS that stay in step with each other.
  • Hooks into the device itself: widgets, Shortcuts and the lock screen.
  • Sharing with other people, which means accounts and invitations.
  • The depth: we grade its features B, which means it covers the whole job.

What this rests on. Yata’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
