How we grade them

Value for money
BThe US App Store lists a one-time upgrade at $8.99 and a Lifetime Membership at $19.99, which would be a bargain. But yearly Premium shows up at both $19.99 and $59.99, and nothing says which one you'll be offered. So a B until that's clear.
CStrides Plus is listed at anything from $4.99 to $149.99, and the App Store doesn't say which price is monthly, yearly or lifetime. Sync and backups sit behind it, when Habitify syncs for free.
Free plan and trial
BFree for up to 3 habits, and those 3 get the lot: streaks, reminders, journal notes, widgets, Apple Watch tracking and CSV export. Three is tight, though. A fourth habit means paying.
BFree forever for three goals or habits, with reminders and charts and no ads. Three is tight, though, and there's no sync or backup until you pay.
Features
AGoals can be daily, weekly, monthly or yearly and ticked off several times a day. Skip Days and Vacation Mode protect a streak, Apple Health can count steps for you, and there are trend graphs, a journal, a passcode lock and CSV export.
AFour kinds of tracker: yes-or-no habits, a number by a date, a running average, and projects with milestones. Plus 150+ templates, a pace line that shows if you're falling behind, streaks and as many reminders as you like.
Ease of use
C4.0 from about 16,900 App Store ratings, which is a C on our ladder. The muddle of prices in the App Store list won't help a newcomer either.
B4.8 from about 19,200 App Store ratings, and you log with a swipe. Picking between four tracker types takes a little thought, and an older review says you can't change a tracker's type once it's made.
Platforms and integrations
DiPhone and Apple Watch only, which is really one operating system. No iPad, Mac, Android or web version is listed. It does hook into Apple Health, Siri Shortcuts, iCloud and Dropbox.
CiPhone, iPad, Mac and Apple Watch, with Apple Health and Siri Shortcuts. The Android app is new, with only a few hundred downloads on Google Play. No web or Windows version.

Who each one suits

Do Habits

  • iPhone users who want to count a habit several times a day
  • Habits the Health app can measure automatically, such as daily steps
  • People who want their habit history as a CSV file

Strides

  • People who track numeric goals as well as yes-or-no habits
  • Apple users who want trackers on iPhone, iPad, Mac and Apple Watch
  • Anyone with only two or three goals, which fit the free plan

Worth knowing

Do Habits

  • The free version stops at 3 habits; any more needs Premium.
  • The App Store lists the app for iPhone and Apple Watch only; no iPad, Mac, Android or web version is listed.
  • The vendor's site shows no prices, and the US App Store lists yearly Premium at both $19.99 and $59.99, so the amount charged in the app may differ.
  • The one-time upgrade items appear in the App Store list without descriptions, so it is unclear which of them a new customer is offered.

Strides

  • The free plan tracks three goals or habits; unlimited trackers, sync, backups, tags, export and the privacy lock need Strides Plus.
  • The App Store lists Strides Plus purchases from $4.99 to $149.99 without saying which is monthly, annual or lifetime.
  • Sharing progress with accountability partners requires iCloud and works on Apple devices only.
  • The Android app is recent, showing 100+ downloads on Google Play, and no web or Windows version is listed.

Key features

Do Habits

Goals several times a day
Set a goal on a daily, weekly, monthly or yearly basis and track it more than once a day; the app tells you when the goal for the period has been met.
Streaks with skip days
Streaks count consecutive periods in which a goal was met. Skip Days and Vacation Mode keep a rest day or a trip away from breaking a streak.
Calendar and trend graphs
A calendar marks each goal as completed or missed, and graphs show trends over a week, a month or a year alongside the longest streak and the number of goals completed.
Apple Health tracking
A habit can be linked to Apple HealthKit so that activity such as steps is counted toward its goal automatically.
Reminders, journal and passcode
Each habit can have multiple reminders and daily journal notes, past activity can be edited, and the app can be locked with a passcode, Face ID or Touch ID.
Apple Watch, widgets and export
Track from an Apple Watch or a Home Screen widget, use Shortcuts and Siri, back up to iCloud or Dropbox, and export data as CSV with totals and time stamps.

Strides

Four tracker types
Habit trackers log repeating actions, Target trackers aim for a number by a date, Average trackers follow a repeating number, and Project trackers break work into milestones.
Templates and SMART goal setup
Start from more than 150 tracker templates or set a SMART goal through a 3-step process, then adjust the defaults.
Daily Goals view
Filters all trackers down to the ones that need logging now, based on their repeat settings. Getting every tracker done earns a perfect day.
Charts and progress reports
Each tracker has progress bars with an on-track pace line, streaks, success rates, calendars and line charts. Reports summarize all trackers by week, month, year or all time.
Reminders and bad-habit tracking
Trackers can have as many reminders as you like on the days they are due, and a Bad Habit setting counts down against a limit instead of up to a goal.
Accountability partners
Invite other people to see progress on chosen goals or habits, or work on a goal together. This needs iCloud and works on Apple devices only.
